MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR MENSAJE DEL PÁRROCOWelcome to Catholic Schools Week! This is an an-nual national celebration of all that our Catholic Schools offer to our country, our communities and our Church—and particularly to our children. Sad-ly, this year a dark shadow extends over our cele-bration in the Diocese of Richmond. Sacred Heart, and Catholic schools in the Dioceses of Richmond and Arlington, have benefited in recent years from the EISTC (Education Improvement Scholarship Tax Credit) program. According to the Virginia Depart-ment of Education website, the program “provides state tax credits for persons or businesses making monetary or marketable securities donations to foundations that provide scholarships to students attending eligible private schools.” Dozens of folks generously provide tuition assistance to our parish school through this program. This is a key initiative which makes faith-based education accessible to families for whom it wouldn’t be affordable other-wise. In fact, each year at Sacred Heart we distrib-ute over $250,000 in financial assistance from EISTC funds alone. A bill (HB 521) has been proposed in the Virginia Legislature to eliminate the EISTC pro-gram. We need your help in contacting our state legislators to ensure that this bill is defeated. This important program helps parents overcome finan-cial obstacles to making the best choice regarding the education of their children, an important human right. They are still accepting clipped Box Tops and will continue to do so until products no longer have them on the packages. Labels may be left in the church or school office. These labels provide the school with free educa-tional supplies.
