Different Times

On June 19-25th, Wayne Johnny attended the Transformation Program offered in

Campbell River, sponsored by the First Nation House of Healing . Because he was moved

so deeply by what he experienced there, he shared some of this with the Monday night

Men’s Group and gave us permission to pass this on to the community.

What stood out for me at this event were all the fear, shame, and guilt we all carry inside us. We all realized that we have similar hurts inside. Once it is brought out, the shame and fear are released. We can let go of the smiling mask we wear, and stop looking down at the ground. Anyone brought up on a rez witnesses similar things, no matter where they come from: all the stuff that happens at parties, which the adults may not even remember or may try hard to forget the next day. But as children we can’t erase the memories. We are burdened with this into our own adult lives. So many secrets, so many things we are too ashamed to mention.

It’s time now to deal with these long-buried feelings. Every community can create safe places to remove the false mask and release the secrets without blaming or naming people. A place to es-tablish trust where it is agreed to keep things con-fidential. The facilitators kept reminding us that what is shared there stays there, not even they can speak about it amongst themselves.

We went around in a circle with each person sharing as much or little as they cared to in the moment. In a short while, our group of 22 felt like brothers and sisters in healing because our stories were so alike. Alcohol & drugs, sexual abuse, gos-sip & backstabbing, put downs and name calling - that made us all afraid to speak the truth or con-fused by what we'd seen or gone through. In truth they call this trauma – anything which makes you afraid and threatens your safety. Your world is never the same after this. It was what our elders learned in residential schools and then they

passed it on to us.

At the workshop we learned about what they call “normalizing”, the experience of keeping things secret, of being threatened with worse things if we talked about what we saw or had happen to us. So, we learned to put up with it as if it was normal. We developed thick skins. We came to believe that this is just the way things are. We didn’t know any better because we were just kids. But this was really a sickness that got into our people. At 57, I’m just now learning that this is not natural and it doesn’t have to continue although to many of us it may seem like the only way to live.

That’s why I’m inviting all the others in our community to come and be free of the past. These are different times now. The old beliefs and fears can be released so our children and grand-children don’t have to go through what we went through. Their eyes can sparkle and their smiles can be real and they can live with trust and innocence.

It takes courage and strength to wake up from the old negative dream where you only expect the worst, speak the worst, and get what you expect all the time. We can beat the drum of peace instead of war. If we never even witnessed love or trust, of course, it’s hard to believe in it. It takes strength to go against all the jokes and put-downs and distance which come at you when you walk the path of our ancestors and want to bring the pride of our heritage back.

Different Times continued….

Some people even make fun of being “a proud Indian”, they see themselves through the hateful eyes

of the white conquerors who colonized us and taught us to be ashamed of who we are. And now we

make fun of one another, make a joke of any attempts to go back to times before all the violence and

fear and anger. We can change this by stepping away from all the old negative ways which make us

jealous of one another’s joy or success,

I’ve always wanted to take this journey myself and now I’m joining many others as well. This July 22 I’ll

be with many brothers and sisters from all over the pacific northwest on the annual Tribal Journey,

paddling with 18 in a canoe from Tulalip to Olympia, Washington. As I stand at the front of the boat

and call out to the villagers along the way, asking for permission to land and be fed on this 10-day

journey, I will carry each of you with me.

Greetings to everyone and to our Families of the Snuneymuxw Community

Great thoughts of your sin alone will drive you to despair, but great thoughts of Christ will pilot you into the haven of peace.

We have planted the seed of a New Church in Downtown Nanaimo from last Sunday 8th July 2012.

My wife and I are so happy that we will be able to continue to serve the Snuneymuxw Community and also

continue from where we have left. Your family and friends are invited to attend the services every Sunday from

6 pm at the Highlanders Hall. We are located at 165 Fraser Road, off Terminal Ave near Mrs. Riches

Restaurant. Our Church is named "Victory in Jesus Multicultural Outreach Centre" and is open to everyone.

We are planning to officially launch our new church on Saturday September 29th 2012.

Our prayers that Our Lord God Almighty will continue to bless the Snuneymuxw Community,

the elders and the leaders, the land and the people.

Snuneymuxw Artist Noel Brown Hallway Exhibit

The Nanaimo Museum is featuring the work of Snuneymuxw artist Noel Brown in a hallway exhibit. Noel pays tribute to his ancestors and his heritage by immortalizing the Coast Salish culture in his art objects. Noel is a member of the Snuneymuxw and Kwakwaka’wakw people and comes from a long tradition of artists and carvers on both sides of his family. He is a renowned carver and jewelry maker whose art can be seen in many public places in Nanaimo such as: the BC ferry terminal at Departure Bay, the new Cruise Ship terminal, killer whale street banners, and more. This exhibit will highlight some of his carvings as well as other art. It can be found in the lobby of the museum along with our Sports Hall of Fame and the 1887 Mine explosion Commemorative exhibit.

We hope to see you there! There is NO charge to see this exhibit.

Snuneymuxw First Nation Celebrates

World Breastfeeding Week

August 1 – 7, 2012

Today, most mothers are choosing to breastfeed their babies. As more Canadians understand just how much of a difference breastfeeding makes to the health of both the mother and her baby, more families are supporting mothers to breastfeed longer, up to 2 years and beyond.

Here are 10 Great Reasons to breastfeed your baby:

1. Provides Nutrients and Protection (boosts babies immunity)

2. Brain Power

3. Convenient and Portable (anytime, anywhere)

4. Size doesn’t matter

5. Benefits Mothers too (reduces risk for breast cancer, ovarian cancer and weak bones)

6. Continues the special relationship (supports bonding between mother and babe)

7. Benefits don’t stop (only food necessary for babies in the first 6 months)

8. Easy on the budget

9. Works for working mothers

10. Good for the environment

For more advice and support on breastfeeding, please visit your Community Health Nurse.

Scholarship Opportunity—Deadline Extended - August 3, 2012

NWAC Helen Bassett commemorative Student Award

Every year, the NWAC Youth Department coordinates the Helen Bassett Commemorative Award

granted to four young Aboriginal women in the amount of $1,000 each. The awards are made possible

by the generous donation of Helen Bassett. Helen Bassett was an Ontario artist and an amazing

woman who tried to make a difference as an individual and engage the government into fair solutions

to Aboriginal land claim issues. After befriending an Aboriginal artist and learning through him about

the plight of Aboriginal people, she became passionate about the issue and had special concern for

advancement of Aboriginal women. In her selflessness, she specified NWAC as one of the

beneficiaries of her estate in her will, which helped to sustain our postsecondary student awards

program to this day. Ms. Bassett felt strongly about the land rights of Aboriginal people and decided to

try and make a difference as an individual. She directed open letters to Prime Minister Trudeau and

his cabinet in 1980 and again in 1983, proposing a plan that a tax be levied on all land transactions in

Canada, to be assigned as royalty to the native people, in payment for the possession and use of the

land. She reflected these ideas in her booklet “Native Rights”

Awards are provided to 4 Aboriginal youth from each of the four directions as per NWAC’s cultural

framework: North, South, East, and West. The NWAC Youth Helen Bassett Commemorative Award is

coordinated by the Youth Department and the selection process and committee are lead by Aboriginal

youth. Eligibility criteria for the Helen Bassett Commemorative Student Award:

Student must be currently pursuing post-secondary studies (Priority placed to Law studies)

Demonstrate financial need

Applicants must be an Aboriginal woman under 30 years of age

Must demonstrate commitment to improving the situation of Aboriginal women and youth in Cana-

da politically, culturally, economically or otherwise

Former Youth Council members are not eligible to apply

Fire Season—Use Caution

On Tuesday July 24, the Nanaimo and Cedar Fire Departments attended to a tree fire on the backside

IR#2. The fire has been extinguished and there are no suspects at this time.

To help prevent fires in or near forest land during the forest fire season, the following steps should be

followed:

Burn only natural vegetation or untreated wood products. (when permitted)

Burn piles are at least 50 feet from structures and 500 feet from any forest slash.

Clear the area around the burn pile of any flammable debris.

Keep firefighting equipment handy - a connected water hose or at least five gallons of water and a

shovel should be nearby.

Don't burn if it's too windy to burn - if trees are swaying, flags are extended, or waves appear on

open water.

Be prepared to extinguish the fire if it becomes a nuisance.

Attend the fire until it is completely out.

Smoking should not be done while moving from one place to another in forest land. Make sure

your butt is out - "dead out!"

Power saws must have a proper muffler and be accompanied by a round point shovel or fire extin-

guisher.

Cars, trucks and machinery must have proper exhaust systems when operated in or near forest

land. Exhaust spark arresters are a requirement on certain machines.

Know your local emergency telephone number if a fire becomes uncontrollable.

Please be aware of the cautions at the Point on IR #1. There has been a large hole dug into the side of

the cliff at the Point. This hole is unsafe for children to play in as it may collapse. In addition there are

many hazards in the field above the Point including cement blocks and pipes sticking out of the

ground. The Nanaimo Port Authority has been notified and they will be investigating.

Please share this information with your children, friends and family.

Congratulations Josh Seward

We would like to congratulate Josh Seward, son of Tim Seward

and Julie Wyse for his academic and athletic achievements.

Josh is 16 years old and going into grade 11 at Cedar Second-

ary School. This year he was on the honor roll and won the

athlete of the year award. Josh has been playing sports since

he was 6 years old and credits his parents participation in

sports as his source of early inspiration. Today Josh plays

lacrosse, basketball and canoes. Playing sports has allowed

him to travel and achieve success. Josh says sports “have

Correction

The Snuneymuxw News would

like to apologize for the error in

our last issue. The Dragon Boat

Festival was opened by Earl

Manson. We had incorrectly

stated it was Gerry Manson.

Thank You

Island Brave Canoe Club would

like to thank all who supported

our car wash on Friday, July 20th

we were able to raise $500.

We have 2 more races off island,

down in the states, this money

raised will help with the cost of

travel and for food.

Once again

Thank you
