Issouf Soumare of Laval University (who is a Co-I on the research project and recently elected to become an External Fellow at SFM) organised a special Session 8-1C (Financial Inclusion and Growth), on Thursday 5 October, attended by researchers, policy makers, and private sector practitioners.

Research projects, grants and fieldwork updates Christine Oughton is currently the 1) co-investigator on ESRC-DFID funded project on Financial Inclusion and Growth (PI – Professor Victor Murinde), (£2m, 2016-2020); 2) co-investigator on ESRC-NSCF funded project on Financial Systems in China (PI- Professor Gerhard Kling), (£345K, 2017-2020). She is also a member of the core research team of the Research

Programme of the AXA research fund Centre for Global Finance (£1m, 2017-2027).

Ricahard Alexander is preparing an application, together with Senija Čaušević and colleagues at the University of Nairobi, for a research grant under the British Academy’s Anti-Corruption Evidence Partnership. It is anticipated that the University of Rwanda will also be part of the consortium.

Collaboration updates

Alberto Asquer is working with a colleague at Bocconi University, Milan, on a paper on ethical principles and practices in NGO multi-stakeholder initiatives, and with a colleague at the National University of Singapore on a paper on regulatory constructivism in the water sector. Chris Adcock is working on a number of collaborative projects with colleagues from Imperial College London, Brunel University, Coventry Business School, Sheffield, Minho, Haifa and Negev universities.

Consultancy and advisory activities Richard Alexander gave a seminar on the UK anti-money laundering measures to the Qingdao office of Zhong Lun Law Firm and some of their banking clients on 17 August. Christine Oughton is engaged in a consultancy/research project on Financial System Resilience in South Africa. Sahar Taghdisi Rad delivered two training sessions (May and July) on “Infrastructural Developments and Projects in West Asia” for the Bank of China’s “One Belt, One Road” executive team.

In other news… Richard Alexander was appointed as a Director of the UK-Sichuan Business Association in September 2017. Chris Adcock is the current editor of The European Journal of Finance Ibrahim Abosag wrote a column on “nation branding” in Saudi Arabian newspaper Okaz. He also examined one DBA at the United Arab Emirates University, and one PhD at Strathclyde University.

Though the summer feels long gone, its fond memories remain… Alberto Asquer enjoyed sailing and snorkelling at the Geremeas beach, Sardinia! J In memory of Lenin's journey, Federico Mucciarelli took a trip across Europe to Russia via train, while Sahar Rad spent a couple of weeks hiking in the western Pyrenees mountains.
