Our program for March is Square in a
Square technique originally developed by Jodi
Barrows. Gloria Stickney is our speaker and she
is a designated instructor of Jodi’s technique. In
addition to elaborating on what quilts can be
made quickly, precisely and easily with this
technique, I’m sure she’ll show some of her cus-
tom Wake Forest quilts as she works in the
Physics dept. on campus. She plans to be set up
early for those wishing to come early and browse
her books, fabric and rulers as well as ask ques-
tions.
Our first workshop will be Saturday, April
1st, 9am and it will be taught by Gloria. She is
providing the fabric for the Prairie Claw block
we are all going to make to demonstrate the
Square in a Square technique. For anyone that
needs a ruler, she will have these for sale along
with the technique book. We still have spots
available for anyone wishing to take the work-
shop - just email me, [email protected] to
sign up.
And just a quick reminder: Gloria is bring-
ing her Guild’s raffle quilt so let’s buy some tick-
ets to support another guild since we know how
important our guilds are to our members!
March’s Program
March 2017 Sew It Goes 2
Minutes from February’s Meeting
The February 28, 2017 meeting was called to order by President, Judy
Whitehead.
There were 35 members and 5 visitors attending the meeting.
Judy Whitehead showed a sample of the March Monthly Mini Quilt Block
– the four-leaf clover. She also showed the apple potholders accessory.
Deb Waldron introduced the February program – Scraps and How To Use
Them by Rene Crowder. The program by Rene included many samples of differ-
ent quilts using different techniques for scrappy quilts.
During the program, Rene described how she sorts and organizes her fab-
ric scraps. She also shared her approach on using scraps in different quilt de-
signs. She emphasized that value (dark or light) is more important than color.
She also noted that scrappy quilts are generally better in more simple block de-
signs.
Rene will be teaching a workshop on Saturday, July 29 using one of the
quilt designs she showed us. Members will vote on which quilt pattern to use in
the workshop. The quilts Rene showed us were Mile-A-Minute, Triple Four
Patch, Scrappy Stars, Christmas Stars, Trail Mix, Fall Blooms, Blackford’s
Beauty, Log Cabin, Rail Fence and Hopscotch.
Dolores Forbare reported the treasury has a balance of $9,464.40. The col-
lection for the Mooresville Soup Kitchen was $33.62.
Dolores emphasized that if members submit their 2017 dues by the end of
the March meeting, their information will be included in an update of the Guild
Directory.

Pineapple Fabrics. Pineapple Fabrics will be coming to enlighten us
on their path from mainly industrial textiles into retail with a huge fo-

choice fabric lines and ideas galore presented.
Well that gets us through the first half of the year. Don’t hesitate

Gloria Stickney Workshop
Sign ups are going on for our first workshop conducted by
Gloria Stickney (sewfabulousquilts.com). We are all making
the same block, Patriotic Prairie Claw block (pictured below),
to learn and understand Jodi Barrow’s Square in Square tech-
nique. Gloria provides the fabric for the block. If we want, we
can compile all our blocks and make a patriotic charity quilt.
The workshop is Saturday, April 1st starting at 9:00am.
Besides the $25 workshop fee, a technique book and ruler are
needed and she will bring these too ($29.95). She will be pre-
senting a trunk show of these quilts at the meeting on March
28th.
Please email Deb Waldron ([email protected]) to
sign up or any questions.

Learn More about Quilt Judging
From Judy: A few weeks ago, I took an Introduction to Quilt
Judging class, and boy did I learn a lot. With the instructor’s
permission, over the next several months, I’ll be sharing with
you some of what was shared with me regarding what criteria
judges use in evaluating quilts.
Binding and Other Edge Finishes
Outer edges may be finished with binding (back to front, front to back); fac-
ing; knife-edge finish; or pillowcase style. Of course, especially for art quits,
the outside edges may be raw, burned, farayed, painted or multiple other
techniques. These only work for pieces that are not to be laundered.
Outside Edges:
Outside edges of quilt are straight and corners square.
Rounded corners or scallops are consistent in shape.
Binding:
Batting should fill the edge finish and go clear to the outer fold.
Binding whip thread should match the binding fabric.
Binding whip stitches should be nearly invisible.
Mitered Binding corners are correctly aligned and stitched closed.
Flange:
Flanges are consistent in width.
Flanges are a consistent distance from the edge of the quilt or an inner
seam line.
2-Fabric Binding:
Top Fabric does not show on the back.
Back fabric does not show on the front.

in the future so I'm excited about being more active in LNQ.
If you have finished charity quilts or tops please bring them this
Tuesday to the meeting. If you need batting, email me at cnthrailk-
[email protected] to tell me the dimensions that you need and I'll bring
it with me Tuesday
