Ask Sew Abbey
Q. Help! I just bought a wonderful Husqvarna Viking embroidery machine and I think I would like to do my own designs and monograms. I don’t know which software program I should start with. I don’t have much experience on the computer. Where do I start? Signed: Clueless on the Computer A. Dear Clueless, You are not alone when it comes to feeling overwhelmed by computer software. The good news is that the soft-ware programs are much easier to learn and use, espe-cially if you have some computer knowledge. And, the Abbey’s Educators give you classes on your software and are here to help if you have problems! So, which software program is for you? With you machine you received a very basic software program. It is the Communication program and contains 5D Configure and 5D Organizer. 5D Organizer allows you to translate your stitch designs into VP3, the lan-guage used by the Husqvarna Viking machines. This program and all of our software programs will read ANY language from the other sewing machine companies, not just VP3, HUS, or VIP. 5D Basic is the entry level software. 5D Basic is the recommended for beginners. It is easy to learn and easy to use! This program allows you to combine de-signs, change design colors and customize your designs by adding motifs, buttonholes, shapes, frame and much, much more. With ‘Quick Font’ you can take any lettering from your computer that is a True Type font and put it into a stitch file. This program includes Monogram Wiz-ard that allows you to select your lettering, the size and the shape of the lettering, as well as, see what the mon-ogram will look like on the fabric. Encore is included with 5D Basic, as well as Endless. Encore lets you create a shaped design with letters, shapes, motifs, etc. Endless puts in registration marks to change your de-sign into an Endless Hoop design. If you think you want to do some digitizing, 5D Extra is a good beginning program. With 5D Extra you have the ability to do very basic digitizing with Design Wizard. Digitizing puts the design, picture, or clip art into a stitch file. 5D Extra also gives you an “Edit” tab that allows you to change your design. You can add stitches, change the color order in the design and insert colors. 5D Vision is also a part of 5D Extra. 5D Vision lets you place your design on your garment, tote bag, quilt block, etc. in the item color. The design shows up inside the hoop, with the registration lines. You can print this out
and place the design as it is pictured on your screen. The last program of the 5D line is 5D Professional. This program has everything included. It has a Design Creator that is the digitizing program. It includes Stitch Editor Plus, Design Aligner, Cross Stitcher, Portrait Stitch, Family Tree, and 5D Sketch. With 5D Pro you are able to change your design any way you want to. You can change your fill stitches, add cutwork com-mands, emboss designs, and stitch commands. The list is endless. If you are interested in doing cross stitch or pictures, it is worth while for you to get 5D Pro-fessional.
We also offer the new TruEmbroidery software for the Mac. If you are an Mac user, this is ideal for you. Quick and easy to use! (See the article on the next page!) I hope this helps with the different programs. If you have any other questions, contact your Abbey store. We’re happy to answer your questions! Happy Sewing!
