AReadingfromActs Acts–16:16-34

Oneday,asweweregoingtotheplaceofprayer,wemetaslave-girlwhohadaspiritofdivinationandbroughtherownersagreatdealofmoneybyfortune-telling.WhileshefollowedPaulandus,shewouldcryout,‘ThesemenareslavesoftheMostHighGod,whoproclaimtoyouawayofsalvation.’Shekeptdoingthisformanydays.ButPaul,verymuchannoyed,turnedandsaidtothespirit,‘IorderyouinthenameofJesusChristtocomeoutofher.’Anditcameoutthatveryhour.

Butwhenherownerssawthattheirhopeofmakingmoneywasgone,theyseizedPaulandSilasanddraggedthemintothemarket-placebeforetheauthorities.Whentheyhadbroughtthembeforethemagistrates,theysaid,‘Thesemenaredisturbingourcity;theyareJewsandareadvocatingcustomsthatarenotlawfulforusasRomanstoadoptorobserve.’Thecrowdjoinedinattackingthem,andthemagistrateshadthemstrippedoftheirclothingandorderedthemtobebeatenwithrods.Aftertheyhadgiventhemasevereflogging,theythrewthemintoprisonandorderedthejailertokeepthemsecurely.Followingtheseinstructions,heputthemintheinnermostcellandfastenedtheirfeetinthestocks.

AboutmidnightPaulandSilaswereprayingandsinginghymnstoGod,andtheprisonerswerelisteningtothem.Suddenlytherewasanearthquake,soviolentthatthefoundationsoftheprisonwereshaken;andimmediatelyallthedoorswereopenedandeveryone’schainswereunfastened.Whenthejailerwokeupandsawtheprisondoorswideopen,hedrewhisswordandwasabouttokillhimself,sincehesupposedthattheprisonershadescaped.ButPaulshoutedinaloudvoice,‘Donotharmyourself,forweareallhere.’Thejailercalledforlights,andrushingin,hefelldowntremblingbeforePaulandSilas.Thenhebroughtthemoutsideandsaid,‘Sirs,whatmustIdotobesaved?’Theyanswered,‘BelieveontheLordJesus,andyouwillbesaved,youandyourhousehold.’TheyspokethewordoftheLordtohimandtoallwhowereinhishouse.Atthesamehourofthenighthetookthemandwashedtheirwounds;thenheandhisentirefamilywerebaptizedwithoutdelay.Hebroughtthemupintothehouseandsetfoodbeforethem;andheandhisentirehouseholdrejoicedthathehadbecomeabelieverinGod.
