God’s anger lasts for a moment; his kindness lasts for a lifetime. Psalm 30:5

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his mercy endures forever. Psalm 136:1

The thought of hell and even less the improper use of biblical

images must not create anxiety or despair.... The concept ofhellfire, the fiery furnace and the unquenchable fire ofGehenna need to be interpreted as symbolic language.... Therisen Jesus has conquered Satan, giving us the Spirit of Godwho makes us cry, “Abba, Father!” (Rm 8:15; Gal 5:6). Pope John Paul II

Pope Benedict XVI said that while Catholics believe the Bible

is inspired by the Holy Spirit and that it is true, one cannottake individual biblical quotes or passages and say each one isliterally true. “It is possible to understand the sacred Scripturesas the word of God only by looking at the Bible as a whole, atotality in which the individual elements enlighten each otherand open the way to understanding. It is not possible to applythe criterion of inspiration or of absolute truth in a mechanicalway, extrapolating a single phrase or expression.” Catholic News Service

Eternal damnation remains a possibility, but we are not

granted the knowledge of which human beings, or if anyhuman beings at all, are involved in eternal damnation. CanGod, who loves man so much, permit the man who rejects himto be condemned to eternal torment? The silence of theChurch is, therefore, the only appropriate position forChristian faith. Even when Jesus says of Judas, the traitor, “Itwould be better for that man if he had never been born” (Mt.26:24), his words do not allude for certain to eternaldamnation. Pope John Paul II

Clare Boothe Luce hesitated at becoming a Catholic because

she doubted the compatibility of eternal punishment withGod’s infinite, merciful love. But Bishop Fulton Sheenpersuaded her that there very well might be no one in hell, andhe received her into the Church. Fr. K. Ryan, Catholic Digest

God loves his people more than a bridegroom his beloved; his

love will be victorious over even the worst infidelities. Catechism of the Catholic Church

God loves us in a way that we might call “obstinate” and

enfolds us in his inexhaustible tenderness. The anger andmercy of the Lord alternate in a dramatic sequence, but lovetriumphs in the end, for God is love. The phrase “fear of theLord” should be understood in terms of awe, rather than dread. In contemplation of the Almighty, the Christian does notexperience servile fear, but a sincere and serious respect thatprompts genuine and active adherence. Pope Benedict XVI

I do not fear Satan half as much as I fear those who fear him.

St. Theresa of Avila

Christ obtained, once and for all, the salvation of man – of

each and of all men, of those whom no one shall snatch fromthe Father’s hand... (John 10:29). Who can change the factthat we are redeemed – a fact that is as powerful andfundamental as creation itself. We became again the propertyof the Father thanks to that love which does not recoil from theshame of the cross to be able to guarantee salvation to all men. The Church announces today the paschal certitude of theresurrection, the certitude of salvation. Pope John Paul II

I am certain that neither death nor life, neither angels nor

principalities, neither the present nor the future, nor powers, neither height nor depth nor any other creature, will be able toseparate us from the love of God that comes to us in ChristJesus, our Lord. St. Paul, Romans 8:38-39

God’s passionate love for his people – for humanity – is at the

same time a forgiving love. It is so great that it turns Godagainst himself, his love against his justice. Here Christianscan see a dim prefigurement of the mystery of the cross: sogreat is God’s love for man that becoming man he follows himeven into death, and so reconciles justice and love. Pope Benedict XVI

By forgiving his executioners, Jesus showed he is not the

accuser of the guilty but rather their advocate and intercessor. Jesus’ words of forgiveness – “Father, forgive them for theyknow not what they do” – were spoken in circumstances of thegreatest hatred and cruelty. Jesus forgives His adversariesimmediately, even as their hostility continues. Jesus is thedefender, not the accuser of the guilty, because He knows thatmany can be less guilty than it appears, or one thinks. For thisreason, he taught his followers not to judge others. The mercyJesus asked for His executioners is extended to all humanity. Pope John Paul II

God is loving toward human beings, quick to pardon but slow

to punish. Therefore, no persons should ever despair of theirown salvation. St. Cyril of Jerusalem

St. Paul explains that Christ came to forgive sin and that his

love is greater than any sin, stronger than all my personal sinsor those of anyone else. This is the faith of the Church. Thisis the Good News of God’s love that the Church proclaims andthat I proclaim to you today: God loves you with aneverlasting love. Pope John Paul II
