Astro Kiddie Club

The discovery of the planets and the solar system is one of the biggest discoveries in the field ofscience. Not only has it presented that the universe is a vast galaxy of heavenly bodies, but because

the wonders of the heavens is very fascinating. There is a sort of magic in knowing that the sky is

filled with objects similar to our planet but are vastly different still.

For this reason, providing amenities for children is also part of the hotels program, with their Astro

Kiddie Club this hotel feature can awaken your childs passion and interest with the stars and

astronomy. Kids 7-13 years old are invited to join their Astro Kiddie Club. With over 50 members and

counting, to date, it is fun to learn about the solar system along with kids who share the same

interest. The Astro Camp held annually is an interactive way to learn about the stars and skies. What

better way for kids to learn about the solar system, the stars and the sky by experiencing the lessons

first hand through a telescope and learning about it from an astronomer.

This August 2014, The Cravings Group recently received the Best Practice in Leadership for Corporate

Social Responsibility (CSR) in the Community from the Sustainable Business Awards. The awards aim

to increase awareness on sustainable business best practices and demonstrate how sustainable

business benefits companies, the environment and all stakeholders, today and the future.

We are very honored with this citation as we are the only candidate from the hotel and restaurant

industry among top companies and businesses in the Philippines, said Susana Guerrero, president

and founder of The Cravings Group. TCG's many initiatives in sustainability earned us this global SBA

in CSR. The goal of sustainability is simply maximizing and properly using, and maintaining life's

resources to remain viable for future generations. It is simple enough to understand that if one puts

back what he takes from the environment, then it is replenished and is again available for use.

Sustainability is more than just being green or eco-friendly. It is about ethical treatment of people and

respect for God-given life resources.

TCG is the only restaurant /culinary school/ hotel to have been certified under the ISO14001:2004

standard in the Philippines. Its Environmental Management Systems (EMS) has recently passed a

Surveillance Audit last July 25.

Architecture

The Seven Suites Hotel Observatory has an architecture mix of stylized contemporary architecture

with a Eurocentric flavor close to Estilo Portugus Suave. The style made use of modern construction

techniques, such as the use of concrete, but contrary to the modern, the use of sharp modernist lines

and techniques were hidden using ornamental elements. An example would be the use concrete

moldings that characterized 17thand 18thcentury craftsmanship, that in turn blurred the distinct

windows that uses a modernist style crossing Bauhaus and De Stijl style of clear glass and clean lines

of dark steel casing. The faade also made us of stone cladding reminiscent of Nordic/Scandinavian

architecture since stone facing walls are typically used in the colder regions. The exterior walls were

made to imitate wooden plank design conventional to Victorian and Queen Anne architecture but the

interpretations were molded from concrete plasterwork. They also used metal balusters for the

balconies atop with straight lines similar to the nautical motif of Streamlined Deco but the lamp posts

designs were derived from any typical European origin. The newly added alfresco added a French

feeling for the faade. The interior, although a bit modernized is definitely derived from a chteau

inspiration with occasional mid-century modern furnishing. The gazebo is definitely inspired by

Iberian/Italianate style with its tiled roof but the massing is definitely typical of Filipino construction,

making use of CMU to assure strength.

RecommendationsThe Seven Suites Hotel Observatory is definitely an exemplar piece of building environment which is

As an example for a closed-loop model, there is a restaurant in Amsterdam called De Kas which is

situated in a productive greenhouse. All the biological waste will be dealt with by an anaerobic

digester that will produce heat and electricity for the greenhouse. A water treatment system is

employed using just plants and microorganisms, producing fresh water and vegetables which in turn

could cycle back to the restaurant. It has a fish pond fed with vegetal waste from the kitchen and

worms from the composts, where the fish could also cycle back to the kitchen. It also has a coffee

shop where the waste grains are used as a substrate for growing mushrooms.
