DAYTON, Ohio, August- 24, 1970 --- Seven students from-Ohio and Illinois, inc~uding three from the Dayton area and three members from the National Honor Society, have received music scholarships from the University of Dayton, Mr. James Hoover, Director of Student Aid & Scholarship, announced today.

A pair from Kettering, Michael A. Bauman, Fairmont East, and Gregory E. Land, Fairmont West, and Miss Roxanne K. Betz from Wayne High School are the Dayton area students. Gary Lee Knedler from Waynesville High School is the other student from Southwestern Ohio.

Ohter Ohioans are Charles T. Kleesattel, Coshocton High School, Coshocton and Joan DA Verhoff, Miller City High School, Miller City. Susan Mary Kotowski from York Community High School, Elmhurst, Illinois, is the seventh.

Miss Betz, Mr. Land, and Miss Verhoff were members of the National Honor Society while Mr. Baumann and Miss Kotowski were also graduated as honor students. Mr. Knedler was awarded The John Phillip Sousa Award, given to the best musician at Waynesville each year.

Mr. Land, the son of Mr. & Mrs. Earl Land, 512 Schuyler Drive, received the Dragon Bell Award in Music at Fairmont West and was a member of the Music Honor Roll Club all four years. He served as a piano soloist with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Columbus and Cincinnati Symphony orchestras. He was the pianist and assistant organist for the Fairmont West Mixed Chorus. He served on the scholar­ship team, was on the honor roll for four years, studied in the advanced French program and the accelerated English program.

Mr. Baumann, son of Mr. & Mrs. Richard Baumann, 2400 Rawnsdale Road, was on the Fairmont East honor roll for six of his eight semesters. He placed second in the General Science program and was cited on the District. State Ohio Test of Scholastic Achievement. He teaches guitar.

Miss Betz, is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. David W. Betz, 6055 Shull Road. She participated in the Wayne band, orchestra, freshman chorus, girls' triple trio and the pep band. She also was a member of the National Honor Society for three years and the National Thespian Society for two. She placed in the top 10 in the Miami University . District Scholastic Achievement Test in Music Theory and graduated ninth in a class of 325.

She served as a pianist and director of Wayne musicals for four years, was organist for two churches, a piano teacher, member of the University of Dayton Honor Band, member of the Junior Co-Ed Music Club and participated in state solo and ensemble contests as accompaniest and soloist.

Mr. Knedler, son of Mr. and Mr. & Mrs. Earl Knedler, R. R. #2, was president of the Wayne Band, participated in musical productions at the high school, was one of the directors of last Spring's Earth Day Program, participated in Sing-Out Waynesville, was a member of the varsity baseball team for four years, ran cross country as a freshman and was a member of the band and chorus for four years.
