Minneapolis North held its narrow half-time advantage on the strength of two sec-ond-quarter touchdowns by junior widereceiver and safety Taylor Johnson, whoscored on both sides of the ball.

The Polars took their first lead following a13-yard touchdown pass from Rodgers toJohnson with 11:09 left in the second quarter.Minneapolis North Community then con-verted the two-point attempt on a pass fromRodgers to senior wide receiver IsaacJohnson. Just more than four minutes later,Johnson scooped up a fumble by Carlsonand rumbled 56 yards for a touchdown.Another conversion pass from Rodgers toJohnson created a 16-7 advantage.

The Tigers closed to within 16-14 at thebreak when Carlson caught an 11-yard touch-down pass from sophomore quarterbackLandon Skalet. Carlson, who rushed for 140yards in the first half, opened the scoring inthe first minute of play on a 74-yard touch-down run. Carlson finished with 161 yardson 27 carries.

Minneapolis North Community defeatedWabasso 16-8 in the semifinals. Rushford-Peterson earned its spot in the championshipgame after defeating Browerville/Eagle Valley49-0.

Class AACaledonia continued its reign of recent

Class AA dominance with a 61-12 champion -

ship victory over Eden Valley-Watkins. Juniorquarterback Owen King had a near-recordtying performance with five touchdown pass-es in leading the Warriors to a successfulchampionship defense and their seventhClass AA championship since 2007.Caledonia also was the Class B champion in1976.

King completed 17-of-25 passes for 328yards to power an attack that tallied morethan 500 yards of offense. Senior runningback Ben McCabe rushed for 99 yards on 22carries and scored three touchdowns.

King’s performance also threatened to tiethe longtime Prep Bowl record of six touch-down passes in a game set by Kirk Midthunof Triton of Dodge Center in 1994. The 61points scored by the Warriors (14-0) was themost in a championship game sinceHutchinson scored 67 in a victory over HolyFamily Catholic of Victoria in the Class AAAAtitle game in 2012.

The Warriors were off and running in thefirst half, rolling up 338 offensive yards. Mostof those were from King, who completed 16-of-24 passes for 319 yards and five touch-downs in the first half. King spread the ballaround to four different receivers and, hisfavorite, junior fullback Andrew Goergen, had seven receptions for 79 yards and twotouchdowns.

Junior wide receiver Jordan Burg also hadtwo touchdown passes among his four recep-tions for 90 yards. King ended a dazzlingfirst-half performance with a 13-yard scoringpass to senior running back Alex Goergenwith 1 minute, 41 seconds left. The onlyWarriors’ touchdown in the first half thatwasn’t through the air was by McCabe on a 1-yard run with 4:27 left in the half.

McCabe also had two punt returns for 84yards in the first half, the longest a 76-yardscamper.

Senior quarterback Reese Jansen was 8-of-22 for 61 yards in the first half for EdenValley-Watkins (11-2). He also had a team-best 83 rushing yards in the first half.

Caledonia outscored Barnesville 55-20 inthe semifinals. In the lower bracket, EdenValley-Watkins defeated Maple River ofMapleton 46-13.

Class AAAYears from now in Rochester Lourdes foot-

ball lore, it will likely be remembered simplyas “The Play.” It was a zany play that not onlymade jaws drop, but also paved the way toRochester Lourdes’ 42-35 victory over top-ranked St. Croix Lutheran of West St. Paul inthe Class AAA title game.

While sophomore running back JakeGroteboer scoring on a 5-yard run with 25seconds remaining in regulation snapped aback-and-forth thrill ride of offense, it wasthe preceding play that will rememberedmost. Using one last-ditch effort to end thegame in regulation, the craziness started witha 14-yard pass from senior quarterback NoahHillman to senior wide receiver Ed Caples. Atmidfield, Caples lateraled the ball to sopho-more receiver Pat Leary. He ran the ball to the30 before lateraling to a streaking senior run-ning back Carter Greguson, who extendedthe play to the 5-yard line.

It helped seal the Eagles’ quest for theirfourth state championship. RochesterLourdes was the Class AAA champion in 2010 and ’14, and the Class A champion in1979.

Class AAAAOne wait for a first championship ended

and another continued following the conclu-sion of the Class AAAA title game. Benilde-St.Margaret’s of St. Louis Park, making its fourthtournament appearance, made this a memo-rable trip with a 31-28 championship victoryover Winona.

Junior running back Liam Ford scored ona 24-yard run with 4 minutes, 50 secondsremaining in regulation time to lift the RedKnights (10-3), who won five consecutivepostseason games en route to the champion -ship. Ford, taking over majority of the carriesin the absence of rushing leader, senior run-ning back Ricky Floyd, rushed for 81 yards on18 carries and scored two touchdowns.

Floyd, who entered the game with 1,810yards and 26 touchdowns, had two carries fornine yards in the first quarter before leavingthe field for the locker room. He returned tothe sideline in the second half with his leftarm in a sling.

For Winona (11-2), the title wait drags on.The Winhawks were making a state tourna-ment appearance for the first time since los-ing to Moorhead 13-7 in the Class AA cham-pionship game in 1987. The wait appeared tobe over when the Winhawks scored six sec-onds into the fourth quarter when juniorwide receiver Dakota Matthees caught a 37-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quar-terback Terrell Hall.

Senior running back Alex Franzwa rushedfor 105 yards on 10 carries to pace theWinhawks. Junior quarterback Riley Bostetercompleted 6-of-16 passes for 124 yards andtwo touchdowns, but also threw three inter-ceptions, including two in the first half.

The Red Knights compiled 188 rushingyards and senior quarterback Will Whitmorecompleted 9-of-17 passes for 153 yards and atouchdown.

Turnabout occurred with 6:59 left in thesecond quarter. Just one play after Bosteterthrew an interception to Ford, the Winhawkstook advantage of a Red Knights’ turnover. After a fumbled exchange off a handoff,Winona junior linebacker Dan Jonsgaardscooped up the loose ball and sprinted 37

yards for a touchdown. Suddenly, instead ofbeing down three points and having to playdefense, the Winhawks catapulted to a 14-10advantage.

Winona defeated Rocori of Cold Spring bya narrow margin of 34-30 in the semifinals. In the second semifinal, Benilde-St. Margaret’sdefeated Marshall 44-34.

Class AAAAADuring the 2016 season, the Elk River pro-

gram was celebrating its 125th season ofplaying the game. One tribute to the legacywas a decal on the Elks’ helmets. Another willbe in their trophy case.

The top-ranked Elks completed a seasonof dominance with a 42-14 victory overSpring Lake Park in the Class AAAAA champi-onship game. The Elks’ deceptive runningattack that faked out defenses all season puton one last show in compiling 446 yards, sixrushing touchdowns and an average of 11.7yards per carry.

This is the first football championship forthe Elks in two title-game appearances. In1990, Elk River was the Class AA runner-upto Anoka, its then-longtime rival.

Senior running back Nicholas Rice rushedfor 242 yards on 13 carries and scored threetouchdowns to lead the Elks’ lethal groundgame. Senior backfield mate Sam Gibaschipped in 105 yards on 11 carries and a 60-yard touchdown run that opened the scoringin the early minutes.

Spring Lake Park, also known for its run-ning game, rushed for 275 yards, but couldn’tspring the long touchdown runs like the Elks.Senior running back Mark Buley led thePanthers with 114 yards on 11 carries.

Elk River (13-0) held the ball for almosthalf as long as Spring Lake Park in the firsthalf. That mattered little, though, because ofthe Elks’ big-play scoring capability. Elk Riverbuilt a 27-0 lead on the strength of four longtouchdown runs in the first half.

Rice rushed for 130 yards on seven carriesand scored two touchdowns in the first halfand Gibas chipped in 95 yards with anothertouchdown. Junior running back SherrodKpahn rushed for 56 yards on three carries, including a 50-yard scoring dash.

The Elks rushed for 285 yards on 21 carriesin the first half. Spring Lake Park (12-1) gen-erated 109 yards on 31 plays in the first half.

Elk River struck relatively quickly on eachof its four scoring drives. The longest was an8-play, 74-yard drive that was capped byKpahn’s scoring run. Gibas’ touchdowncapped a 2-play, 63-yard drive and Ricescored after drives of six and five plays, respectively.

The Elks advanced to the title game with a19-7 victory over Owatonna. Spring LakePark claimed its championship berth afterdefeating Mankato West 14-0.

Class AAAAAAThis time, the dramatics belonged to

Totino-Grace.

Two years after losing to Eden Prairie inthe Class AAAAAA championship game inheartbreaking fashion, Totino-Grace (13-0)reversed course in the biggest game of theseason with fourth-quarter heroics that pavedthe way to a 28-20 title victory over EdenPrairie (11-2).

Senior backfield mates Gayflor Flomo andIvan Burlak scored late touchdowns in a 21-point, fourth quarter blitz, and senior line-backer Charlie Waters recovered a key fumblethat stopped Eden Prairie from mounting acomeback in what they hoped would be itsMinnesota-best 11th state championship.

Instead, it was the first Class AAAAAAchampionship for Totino-Grace, the onlyMinnesota school that opts to play up twoenrollment classes. It is the 10th state cham-pionship overall for Totino-Grace, which islocated in Fridley. The Eagles won a ClassAAAAA title in 2012, and had a string of ClassAAAA championships in 2003, ’04, ’06, ‘07,’09, and ’10. In 1977 and ’78, Fridley Gracewas the Class A champion.

Perhaps fittingly, Eden Prairie and Totino-Grace, programs that have been synonymouswith dominance in recent years, share thestate record with 10 football championshipseach. But lately, the edge has gone to Totino-Grace. The Eagles have won the last threematchups, including a 17-14 victory in theseason-opener at Eden Prairie.

Totino-Grace took the lead for good onFlomo’s 1-yard run with 5:28 left in thefourth quarter. Four minutes later, Burlakplowed in from two yards out.

Eden Prairie took its second lead at 14-7when senior wide receiver Kyle Connelly, stretched and fully extended, hauled in a 41-yard touchdown pass from sophomorequarter back Cole Kramer in the third quarter.Later, Totino-Grace was pushed backward

and forced to punt. But Eden Prairie gave itright back on the muffed catch and ensuingfumble.

Totino-Grace used that opportunity to tiethe score again on a 4-yard touchdown passto 6-foot-8 senior tight end Rocky Kreuserfrom senior quarterback Kyle Halverson on4th-and-2 in the opening seconds of thefourth quarter.

A tense first half of give-and-take ended,predictably, in a 7-all tie.

Totino-Grace knotted the score with 11seconds remaining in the second quarter on a1-yard run by Flomo. That ended an 11-play,55-yard drive over the final 2 ½ minutes ofthe first half.

Eden Prairie grabbed a 7-0 lead with 7:45left in the first quarter on an 86-yard puntreturn by Connelly. On the play, instead ofletting the ball bounce by him to be downedby Totino-Grace, he waited slightly for adefender to pass him before deciding to fieldthe punt on the first bounce before weavingthrough traffic for the game’s first touch-down.

Totino-Grace defeated Blaine 21-20 in thesemifinals. Eden Prairie advanced with a 23-0 victory over Champlin Park.
