TERMS AND ACRONYMS

AD (Active Directory)

It is a central component of the Windows platform services that provides the means to manage the

identities and relationships that make up network environment.

Client/Server

It describes the relationship between two computer programs which the clients relies on the server.

DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)

Is a network protocol that enables a server to automatically assign an IP address to a computer

from a defined range of numbers configured for a given network.

DNS (Domain Name System)

Is a database system that translates a computer's fully qualified domain name into an IP address.

It allows to connect to another networked computer or remote service by using its

user-friendly domain name rather than its numerical IP address.

PXE (Preboot Execution Environment)An environment to boot computers using a network interface

It allows a workstation to boot from a server through network interface

Terminal Services

The sharing of applications and desktops over the network

Is a window-based application service that enables clients to access a server remotely to execute,

process and store data on the server

TFTP (Trivial File Transfer Protocol)It transfers files to and from a remote computer

Used the user Datagram Protocol and provides no security features

It is often used by servers to boot diskless workstations, X-terminals, and routers.

Thin Client

Is a computer or a computer programs which depends on the server itself

UDP (User Datagram Protocol)

Is part of Internet protocol suite, using which, programs running on different computers on a

network can send short messages known as Datagrams to one another.

Is a communication protocol that offers a limited amount of service when messages are exchanged

between computers in a network that uses the Internet Protocol

Windows Server 2003

It is a server operating system produced by Microsoft

It is a computer program that delivers a service to clients.

1.) First we must install our Windows 2003 Server

You may use Per Server or Per Device Licensing Mode

Choose Per server and specify the number of concurrent connections

Choose Per Device if your Client has its own license

Specify Computer Name and Administrator Password

You may choose Typical or Choose Custom depending on your Network Configuration

Just Choose No and put your Workgroup Domain Service will be configured Later



2.) Configure Active DirectoryFigure 2.1

Specify your Computer’s IP as STATIC

Go to START then click Manage Your Server on the upper left of Start Menu

5.) WinAgents TFTP Server Installation and

Configuration

Open the tftpserver-setup.exe file found on Windows 2003 tftp folder

Once opened, click next to start

Find your TFTP Root folder and Edit the default.wtc using Notepad.exe.

Win2kIP = the IP address of your Terminal Server

Resolution = the display resolution of your thin client

1024x768 or 800x600

Bpp = bits per pixel or the color quality

16, 24 or 32



6.) Testing on a Thin Client

PXE-E53 No Boot File Name Received

PXE-E51: No DHCP or proxyDHCP offeres were received

SolutionCheck your server’s firewall configuration

You may turn off your firewall or add DHCP UDP port 67 & UDP port 68

Log On error, this is due to the Terminal Services rights you should permit your user to access through

terminal. Continue to Chapter 7 for more info.
