Be sure that your goal can bemeasured in the sense that you can

evaluate its progress, i.e.,improvement of grades or passinggrades in all subjects will enable

you to measure how you are doing.

    A ttainable

You must make sure that your goal

is within reach before committing. It should be realistic, achievable, but challenging.

  • 8/7/2019 session2 Career_Path JO

    13/51

    For instance, finishing college is

attainable for you because youhave the dedication and willingnessof doing so, considering that you

have five more siblings that yourparents want to send to school. With this limitation, you have to be

flexible and ready to face thechallenges that you may encounter.

  • 8/7/2019 session2 Career_Path JO

    14/51

What considerations can you do to adjustyourself to the situation?

    - You may have to make target of finishingcollege after five years instead of four.

    - You may want to add some other conditionssuch as attending night classes to earn extraincome in a day

    - With this, your goals requires you to do

something which will allow you to grow andimprove yourself. It becomes stimulatingbecause you commit yourself to actions thatstretch you to do your best.

    A crucial test

Have you selected goals that will bemost relevant to bridging the gapbetween where and what you are now

and where and what you want to be? Will a second year report card or a high

    school diploma contribute towards your

    goal of finding a job?

  • 8/7/2019 session2 Career_Path JO

    Time-bound

    goals are dreams with deadlines.

Every goal must have a realistictime frame.

    Jumping theH

    urdles Outside of Me

    There are many different external

obstacles that adolescents will facein the path that they choose totake. Many of these problems may

seem like they are beyond theadolescents control.

It is a time of extremely rapid changewhen young people begin to search fortheir identities, develop meaningful

interpersonal relationships, establish asense of independence, competenceand self-esteem.

    38/51

    Parents

When making a choice for furthereducation, parents are usually asignificant influence on the adolescent.

Since the parents are the primary rolemodels of the children, they willnaturally be drawn to follow in theirfootsteps.

    43/51

    The Parental Mindset:

The financial benefits that a careerchoice can provide the teenager in thefuture, and consequently the family.

The prestige the chosen career wouldbring to the family.

The current occupation of the parent.

    The parents personal vicarious motives.

  • 8/7/2019 session2 Career_Path JO

    44/51

    Finances

Important factor to consider whenchoosing a college and course. If youdont have the finances to back you up,

it would be impossible to pursue highereducation.

SCHOLARSHIP given to thosestudents who are well-deserving.

    45/51

    Friends

In high school, it is common amongteenagers to establish strong ties with agroup of fellow schoolmates. It is for

this reason that peer pressure can alsobe a problem for the adolescent when itcomes to deciding on a career path tofollow.

  • 8/7/2019 session2 Career_Path JO

    46/51

Peer Influence takes its form in two ways:

    AShow ofHands Teenagers find

security among their peers. Given this,it would not be far fetched to considerthat students may be highly influenced

by the career choices their peer make.

  • 8/7/2019 session2 Career_Path JO

    47/51

Habits ofExpectation The influencethat barkada members inflict on eachother is very powerful. Friendsoftentimes advice each other, and theopinions of the core group are highlyvalued. Students may have thetendency to base their decisions onwhich college and course their friendsthink will best suit them, or on whichcollege and course is cool.

    48/51

    Distance

The location of the school may be a greatobstacle in pursuing ones career path. Thechosen college of the adolescent may be toofar from home, and this maybe a possible

problem.- extensive research on the colleges

    around its vicinity

    - consider the following

    - Lodging facilities near the school- Travel expenses

  • 8/7/2019 session2 Career_Path JO

    49/51

Studying in a college or university faraway from home would mean that theteenager will be separated from hisfamily. Being away from the family maybe an advantage because it will teachthe adolescent to rely on himself, thereby making him a moreindependent individual. However, onemay grow homesick or the family mayhave difficulty with such separation.

    WhatAdolescents Must Keep in Mind

Adolescents should remember that everyobstacle they face is an opportunity for themto triumph and advance. Remember, it is notwhat happens in life, it is not what happens

in life, it is what you do about it that matters.Going through obstacles is necessary foradolescents to truly appreciate what isworthwhile. Facing these setbacks will make

    adolescents become better and strongerpersons
