SUKALA S.A. is situated in the Segu, Mali. It covers a land area of 60 square kilometers. It has two sugarcane plantations with a total area of 4,753 hectares. It is an agricultural-industrial-commercial conglomerate built with the assistance of China in the 1960s and 1970s.At the request of Mali, it changed through debt-swap-equity into a joint venture between China Light Industrial Corporation for Foreign Economic and Technical Co-operation(CLETC)and the Malian government in 1996. China-Guinea-Bissau Agricultural Technology Cooperation Project started in 1999. During the period of cooperation, the Chinese government dispatched agricultural technologists to carry out many activities of technological guidance demonstration and talents training on rice planting . 23 rice varieties, introduced China, have all achieved success, of which, 10 rice varieties have won the championship of Good Progress Award on Science and Technology in Guinea-Bissau.
