Where does it come from?

When Al lah created Adam (as), He told A dam to go to a

grou p o f Angels and say Salaam and l isten to their

reply and to ld him , th is is you r greet ing and thegreet ing o f you r descendants. Adam went and said

Asalamu Alaikum and they said Walaikum Salam

A Reply is so important that the Prophet Saw said that you have

this right over another muslim.

Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet(saw) said, The

Musl im has f ive r ights over his fe l low musl ims. He should

return his Salaams, vis i t him when he is sick, attend his funeral ,

accept his invitation and pray for mercy for him (Yarhumu

kallah) when he sneezes..

It has been narrated from Ibn Umar, that the

Holy Prophet said, " He who speaks wi thout

f i rs t ly giv ing salaam, then do no t answer him

(to what he has to say)."

There is no ruling to say that only the young say Salaam to their Elders.

Nor is there any ruling in Islam to say that you should touch the feet of the

Elders to give your Salaam. This is a tradition which has been adopted

from the Hindu culture who will only touch the feet of someone who is older

or of superior position.

Who should you say Salaamto?

Some people may think that it is custom to only say Salam to people

who are older than them and it is unnecessary to greet children with

Salaam too. The Prophet (SAW) use to greet children withSalaam as a way to teach them manners and build their self esteem. It

is a Sunnah and therefore

we should not shy away

and practise this.

Shaking hands forg ives sins The Companions of Allahs messenger (SAW) used to shake hands

and it is highly recommended that we shake hands with our brothers

and sisters in Islam.

Al- Bara (RA) reported Allahs Messenger (saw) said Two Muslims

will not meet and shake hands without having their sins forgiven (by

Allah) before they depart. Abu Dawud.

Allah forgives Minor sins of the two believers shaking hands.

However it must be noted that it is not permissible for a female to

shake hands with a male.

Sleeping

On average, we sleep 2555 hours in a year. If we live to the age of 60 that

equates to 20 years which means you would have spent 1/3 of your life

sleeping!

Throughout the year we will actively do deeds or direct worship to gain

reward. Given the number of hours spent sleeping with no guarantee

that we will wake in the morning, perhaps we should give etiquettes of

sleeping more thought!

We can covert these hours into time spent being obedient and

worshipping Allah by following simple etiquettes

SIMPLES!!

MiswaakOn Awakening

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Messenger

of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said,

Never woke from sleeping at any time of the day or night

without cleaning his teeth with a Miswak before performingablution.

To perform Miswak after sleeping when one awakes is a Sunnah.

Whilst asleep the bad odours from the stomach comes towards the

mouth which is why the mouth smells. With the blessings of this

Sunnah the mouth will be cleansed

WUDHU It is highly recommended to

perform Wudhu before going tosleep.

It is a Sunnah and a way of

seeking Allahs forgiveness.

It protects one from the

shaytaan . It would also bebetter should the person die,

He will die in Faith. What more

better way than to die as a

faithful Muslim!

When you go to bed, dowudhu as for prayer and l ie

on your right side.

Dua befo re Sleep

Hudhaifah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

Whenever the Prophet (S) lay down for sleep at night, he would

place his (right) hand under his (right) cheek and supplicate:

Bism ika Al lahumma amootu wa-ahyaa.

In Your name O Allah, I live and die.

Other Supp l ications

Surah Ikhlas x3 as if recited the whole Quran

Ayatul Kursi will protect one from the time they

sleep to the time they wake up

Surah Iklhas, Surah Falaq and Surah Nas blow

x3 cupped hands and wipe over whole body

Surah Mulk

Finally, the person should recite the shahada(declaration of faith) lest they should die in their

sleep and then these would be their last words.

Make intention to wake for fajr

Waking up

When we sleep, in a way it is like being dead, we are

unaware of our surroundings.

We should seek protection against Shaytaan

Allah may take your soul while you are sleeping and it

should be remembered that is He, the Almighty who

resurrects you when you awake

on his left, must seek Allahs refuge from the evil of the Satan

(by saying: Audhu billahi minash-Shaitanir-Rajim). Then it w ill

We have been advised not to eat too much but just enough to

keep us going. The habit of eating less is a method ofpreventing sickness and disease.

The Prophet (PBUH) said " A m an does not f i l l

any vessel wo rse than his s tomach. It is

suf f ic ient for the son o f Adam to eat enough

to keep him alive. Bu t i f he mus t do that, then

one-th i rd for his food , one-th i rd fo r his dr inkand one-thi rd for h is air ." (Tirm idhi)

Drinking whilst standing

Abu Hurairah (RA) reported: Messenger

of Allah (S) said, None of you should

drink standing; and if anyone forgets,

he must vomit.

Muslims

It is good manners if you are serving others drink,

to serve them first and you drink last.

Hudhaifah (RA) reported: The Prophet(S)

prohibited us from wearing brocade or

silk and drinking out of gold or silver

vessels and said, These are meant forthem (disbelievers) in this world and for

you in the hereafter.
