The trail leads form the railway station to the old ceramic factory, through the ferry station, winding along the lake shore. The two-kilometre walk is made of about 5000 transponders, placed in the ground at a 60 cm distance from each other, with an angle of 60 degrees. A message describing the surrounding environment is associated to some of the transponders, while the others only give an acoustic signal to indicate that you are on the right track. The path is a sensory one, and it allows the visually impaired to experience the surroundings in a fully independent and safer way. The project is still in its prototype phase. In future the path will have links to shops and public utilities, representing not only a means to move around easily and get oriented in the environment, but also a way to use the services offered by the nearby facilities.

SESAMONET: A Secure and Safe Mobility Network

Comune di Laveno Mombello

In Laveno Mombello, a small town on Lake Maggiore not far from Ispra, the municipal authorities have installed the first prototype of SESAMONET path, in collaboration with the JRC.
