MON 15FEBArrivalWorkshop introductionWelcome Party

Task: First Impression of Manchester. How much Manchester do you know?

SESAM010.CO.UK DIARY

Atfer all 10 Participants arrived at EASA HQ, Hulme Str. 43, we started to work on our first task. The Idea was to explore Manche-ster through 3 steps: Scetches, Photos and at the end a collection of several 3D Objects found around Maanchester- that at the end we were able to build up the concept of an exhibition that shows the „First sight“ of Manchester for the coming European Architecture students assembly from 31.July-14th of August: EASA010.net

THE FIRST IMPRESSION

We drew our first impressions of Manchester on Postcards and sent them back to the Organi-zers of EASA010, hosting the SE-SAM, a small european students of architecture meeting, which is part of „EASA: An Exhibition“. This is a Hommage to the Great Britain-First Class -Post Service:1 Card didnt arrive and 5 werent stemped, but after all they are reflecting our first impressions of Manchester, or facts that we have heard before we have ever been here. Everyone might pro-bly agree, that the first 2 things that come to our minds, when hearing Manchester is actual-ly Football and Oasis, closly fol-lowed by brick and lots of Rain. But with this SESAM Work-shop, we are trying to show what Manchester really is.

Its not just Manchester united, music and rain, even though the-se 3 things are very important for Manchesters developement in the past. The rain was supporting the growing of Cotton, which gave

Manchester the Name Cottonopo-lis, first bestowed during the 19th century, it denotes a metropolis of cotton and cotton mills, as inspi-red by Manchester‘s status as the international centre of the cotton and textile processing industries during this time. Manchester Uni-ted is also showing how important the association of Workers was that brought together Football Players in their spare time, while being the birthplace of Industriali-

zation facing big social differences between Workers and Manage-ment during the beginning, which also brought Karl Marx and Fried-rich Engels here for starting thelabour movement in Europe.Manchester also has music hi-story like no other, manchester is one City of an assembled cast of artists, musicians, hooligans, writers, workers, students, entre-preneurs and poets playing out a unique history of a unique city.

TUE 16FEBExcursion: VisitManchester Tour (touristic)Workshop

Task: Photography

It‘s pancake‘s Tuesday: Emma and James spoiled us with pan-cakes and sweet toppings for breakfast! With loads of energy we leave for the first tour through the city. Chris demonstrates his guiding talent and unfailing know-ledge of his beloved Manchester.

The stories are starring: „the ha-cienda: discovery of rave music“, „the radisson: rolls visiting royce and starting a company“, „prince albert‘s statue: a shelter against pigeon shit“ and many more...As a surprise we get picked up at the Urbis by a traditi-onal red double-decker bus. No walking anymore, yay!

This allows us to expand the tour all around the (big) city of Manchester and we are shown around and en-tertained by the hilarious bus dri-

ver, who happens to be an architect at the same time (no coincidence). One highlight of the tour cer-tainly is the Trafford Centre, an outstanding piece of fake „ r e n a i s s a n c e “ a r c h i t e c t u r e .

After sandwiches for lunch we are ready to do some work. Alastair comes over and encurages us to do some sketches and to select photos we took during the tour. As we stay in for the afternoon most of us get warm again, and the rest is being heatened up la-ter thanks to the spicy(!) dinner.

The evening program starts real-ly posh with a visit at the cloud23 VIP-area in the 23rd floor of the Beetham Tower, better known as Hilton Tower. The floor win-dow turns out to be rather poor, but the view over Manchester

(and the drinks) surely pay for it. Some are not too happy to miss the soccer game between ManU and Milan, but unfortunately the skybar doesn‘t provide a TV.

The pub called Peveril of the Peak puts a nice contrast to that pro-gram, especially as it hosts 4 el-der men playing irish songs on guitars and pipes. One of them especially attracts our attention by his outstanding look: a com-bination between tattoed head, nose rings, hot pants and knitwear.

Of course the nice evening doesn‘t stop as we go back to HQ..

PS: It is Billy‘s birthday! Hor-ray to this great Irish fel-low to spend his 26th with us (and then the whole week..)!

WED 17FEBExcursion: UnseenManchester Tour (hidden Manchester)Workshop

Task: Finding hidden/lost objects that reflect Manchester

We‘ve discovered the thirdreincarnation of flash (for the former 2 cfr. wikipedia)on Wednesday we spent all the morning TRYING to followDominic „Flash“ Sagarl.

He showed us the underground side of Manchester that practical-ly means the canals, the late 70s aspect of the city and some other good related stories. that‘s it!

It was hard finding lost objects, as Great Britains street are just to cle-an, and we didnt just want to collect trash. Unfortunaltly the TV , that so-meone trew out of the Window last night, probly cause of a lost Foot-ball match, was already cleaned away , when we wanted to get it.

S p o i l e r

in the end i realized why do-minic runs so fast apparentlyviolating certain laws of physics.he did that not because of the scarcity of time but because do-ing so he could resist to the RE-ALLY freezing air of manchester.it‘s really cold here.

THU 18FEBWorkshop

Task: Installation and Conclusion of the 3 former steps of Design

Thursday begins with the realisation that a lot of work needs to be done. Materials are ordered, photo-graphs are processed and a physical object is obtained by each participant to represent a characteristic of the City. The maps by Ana and Adrian are combined to give a graphic image to be placed on the floor showing our path around Manchester and the sights we see, which include the canals, roads, railways and a brick construction symbolising the Hilton Tower seen from everywhere in the city. With the arrival of the materials there was then an ridiculous conversation about the colours of umbrellas and with the arri-val of some more guests the atmosphere in the EASA HQ builds. Work begins on the empty room, tape is layed and umbrellas are hung while work on the rest of the exhibition gathers pace and manpower. The irish contingent arrives bringing one daft bastard and the work and beers then coontinue into the night.
