In River Oaks, the 31st of October brings familyfun as many of the local churches hold Fall Festivalsand trunk or treat activities. Most of these festivalscome complete with games, music, and that all impor-tant free candy! River Oaks United Methodist Church, and OneFaith Church were two of the churches which heldtheir usual Halloween family activities and helpedmake the October Holiday a safe and fun evening. Several River Oaks families also held annual par-ties which drew children for the candy, and friends forthe fellowship and food. John and Nancy Loven held their yearly costumeparty, and along with their neighbors were responsiblefor the street being crowded with families and childrenlooking at the decorations, and of course, seeking outthe generous supply of candy. The UIL 4A State Cross Country championshipstook place on Saturday, Nov. 4 at Old Settlers Park inRound Rock. The Castleberry boys and girls teams hadalready made school history by qualifying both teamsfor state this year, but what the girls accomplished isunprecedented in CHS athletic history as they finishedas the 4A Cross Country Runner Up in state. This rep-resents the highest finish by any team sport in the his-tory of Castleberry High School. The girls field consisted of 16 teams and the top149 runners in 4A in the state. As has been the case allseason long, the Lady Lions were led by freshmanCaitlin Buendia who finished second in state (behindthe defending state champion). But in cross countryevery team member’s finish is just as important indetermining the team’s final standing. The top fiveplaces of each team are added up for the team’s total –lowest total team score wins. The girls team scored 105points to finish second in state to Bandera, who fin-ished with 73 points. Two of Bandera’s top three run-ners are seniors, while the Lady Lions top runnersinclude three freshmen and a sophomore. The futuremay bring a state championship in years to come toCastleberry. From here the Wildcats took total control of the game as they scored on theirnext six possessions and led 56-0 at halftime. The Lions took the second half kickoff and marched down the field for theironly score of the night. Senior Justin Taylor was the workhorse of this drive withsix rushes for 61 yards (with a long run of 25 yards). The big play came on a secondand goal from the 18-yard line which followed a 15-yard offensive interferencepenalty against the Lions which had moved the ball back from the 3-yard line.Dameron threw a lateral out to Taylor who then passed downfield to senior BrandonReed for a touchdown. Senior Kade Parnell’s point after touchdown was good andmade the score 56-7 with 4:05 left in the third quarter. The Wildcats would punchin one more touchdown to make the final score 63-7. The last home football game is always somewhat significant. Time is made tohonor all of the seniors, whether they are trainers, cheerleaders or band members.But for the 25 senior football players it is an extra special, if not bitter-sweet,moment marking the last time they will set foot in W.O. Barnes stadium as a playerin a Castleberry uniform. It takes a dedicated player to sacrifice countless hours topractice, day after day, season after season, for four years while at CHS.Unfortunately, this loyal perseverance has resulted in few victories, which is oftenviewed as the immediate reward for such hard work. However, the long-termreward for such perseverance is far greater and more important. You don’t quit whenthings get tough, or don’t go your way. These 25 senior football players have notquit, despite enjoying just a hand full of victories in their careers at Castleberry. Butthese young men are winners. For “winners never quit, and quitters never win!” Notin football, and not in life. Hats off to these seniors. The Lions (1-8/ 1-3 in district) will play their last regular season football game

The Castleberry Lions played the Kennedale Wildcats this past Friday, Nov. 3on Senior Night at W.O. Barnes stadium. The Wildcats, one of the best 4A footballteams in the state of Texas, showed why they are currently ranked fourth in the state.They took advantage of excellent field position to begin the game on their first twopossessions. Starting at their own 43-yard line and then on the Lions 34-yard line,the Wildcats scored both times to jump out to a 14-0 lead by the 4:21 mark in thefirst quarter. After these two scores the Lions did respond with a drive from theirown 25-yard line down to the Wildcat 41-yard line.
