Pan american world airways started the use of nau-tical terms in connection with air travel. words like “captain” and “stewards” were used to attract cus-tomers who were accustomed to luxury ship travel. The airline also began dressing its crews in naval-style uniforms.
The term “fly-by-night” is used to describe some-one who leaves secretly, often from the scene of a crime or perhaps to avoid anxious creditors.
“Mom didn’t want to go to Personal Care ... It was tough! mom didn’t even want to think about Personal Care. She kept insisting that she could manage. I was tempted to remind her that it was me that took her shopping and to the hairdresser and the doctors appointments and the pharmacy but that really wasn’t the crux of the matter at all. After all she’s done for me, I was happy to help out, to do what I could to help her stay in her home. It was the not knowing that kept me up at night. Not knowing whether she was eating regularly, if she had taken her medication or if she’d fallen or left the stove on. I worried constantly and so did my brother so we started checking in on her more often. Eventu-ally we arranged for home care for a couple of hours every day but no matter what measures we took we couldn’t shake the feeling that she was in a rut and had lost that spark. She seemed to lack direction, sleeping odd hours and staring at the tV seemingly unaware of what she was watching half the time. After a family meeting and no small amount of consternation we agreed to suggest to her that she begin to think about a Personal Care Residence. As you might imagine she wasn’t crazy about the idea. the only concession she would make was that she would at least visit a couple of facilities for ‘future reference.’ the visit to walden III was a revelation to her. I can only imagine what she expected to find but what she
did see, people her age engaged in all sorts of activities or talking animatedly at meals, clearly made an impression on her and although she wasn’t ready to ‘sign on’ then and there, the seed had been planted and within a month she agreed to at least give it a try. It’s been positive for everyone involved! with-in a couple of weeks, mom’s focus shifted from all that she was ‘giving up’ to all that she’s get-ting. the staff and the residents both seemed to understand what a vulnerable time it can be for newcomers and everyone gave her a very warm reception. the residents are a very nice group of people and their desire to want to continue to do as much as they can for themselves was contagious and mom seemed to get a boost from the start. I think the key to the whole thing is that they’re engaged in life and now thankfully so is mom. She still won’t say to us that she thinks the move was necessary or that she’s happy to be there but when my brother or I have her home for dinner or a family event at some point during the visit she will invariably inform us that she “should probably be getting home!”

( N A P S I ) — M a n y homeowners over-look one of the most important things to prepare for when the holiday season rolls around—winter storms. Experts be-lieve homeowners are unprepared for winter storms, putting their families and their
What To Know About Winter StormPreparedness
home in danger. So while you’re decking the halls for the sea-son, make sure you take the following into consideration and en-sure your home is both merry and safe.Major Dangers As-sociated with Winter Storms Homeowners can
face major dangers when winter weather rolls around, includ-ing damage from the weight of ice, snow and sleet. In the case of major snowstorms, families can even be trapped in their homes due to blocked or frozen entryways. Cracked or burst wa-ter pipes connected to
anything from steam and hot water heating to a fire-protection sys-tem can be extremely costly. Even after the storm, melting snow can cause major flood-ing. Tips to Winter-ize and Protect Your Home Though the list of winter weather dan-
gers runs long, there are 10 easy steps that can ease or prevent these issues, all while creating a safer home environment during emergencies. 1. Install weather stripping. 2. Have your fur-nace/heating system serviced at the beginContinued on Page 9
Winter StormContinued From
Page 8ning of each season to ensure it runs proper-ly, and have the filters changed. 3. Move furniture away from vents. 4. Add rock salt and sand to emergency kits to help melt ice on walkways. 5. Install roof-heat-ing cables to prevent ice dams on roofs and gutters. 6. Insulate pipes. 7. Place a cover over attic stairs. 8. Insulate outlets with gasket covers. 9. Invest in an au-tomatic home stand-by generator, such as those from Generac, that automatically provides power for heat and electricity when there is a power outage. They turn on as soon as the power goes out and stay on
until utility power is restored. 10. If you have extra money in your budget, go for attic insulation, which can save as much as 30 percent on heating costs. As a leader in pow-er equipment serving residential, light com-mercial, industrial and construction markets, Generac’s products are available through a broad network of independent dealers, retailers, wholesalers and equipment rental
companies. Basic win-terizing for a home can be done for less than $200, but by in-vesting in installations like attic insulation and a Generac home standby generator,
you get the best lev-el of protection from winter storms. Learn More For further facts and advice, visit www.Generac.com or call 888-GENERAC.
The ancient greeks chewed a chewing gum made from the resin of the mastic tree. The Mayans chewed chicle, which is the sap of the sapodilla tree. in 1906, Frank Henry Fleer invented a bubble gum that he called Blib-ber-Blubber.

Long gloves are sometimes worn with a short sleeve dress. An elaborate bouquet, simple jewelry, and pale hosiery are also popular. At semi-formal wed-dings, the Bride may choose a long stately dress of white, ivory or delicate pastel tints. The headdress is often finger tip length, and the accessories are sim-ilar to those worn in a very formal wedding. At informal wed-dings, a floor length or current fashionable length of white or delicate tints in sim-ple trainless style is sometimes chosen. The veil is usually short to elbow length. A sim-ple bouquet is often
selected. At very informal weddings, the Bride may wear a suit or street dress. A bridal hat or short veil may be used, with a simple corsage, white shoes, and gloves.

Page 13just don’t get the work you put into that quilt you gave them? If you said yes to any of these questions, it might be time for you to join a quilt group. Quilting groups, also called guilds, are packed with people who are cut from the same cloth, sharing the same passion for fabric, sewing, col-or, and beauty. You’ll likely discover an ar-ray of aesthetics and
skill levels among the group, not to mention a veritable patchwork quilt of personalities! The common thread lies in the eagerness to share stories about quiltmaking. And we promise, this gang will understand all the hard work you put into a project!

(NAPSI)—When it comes to keeping your car running smooth-ly, one of the most important pieces of equipment may not be under the hood but in the glove compart-ment. Free Auto Guide That’s because that’s the place to put the to-tally redesigned “Car Care Guide” from the nonprofit Car Care Council. The 80-page guide uses easy-to-un-derstand, everyday language rather than technical automotive jargon and covers the most common pre-ventive maintenance occasions and proce-dures that should be performed to keep
Free Car Care Guide For Motorists
cars safe, dependable and efficient. It also includes descriptions of major vehicle sys-tems and parts, and a list of questions to ask about maintenance or repair procedures. A
car care checklist re-minds motorists what vehicle systems need to be maintained and when service should be performed. Twenty additional pages provide new information on find-ing an automotive re-pair shop, alternative fuels, understanding the warranty, vehicle telematics, and careers in the auto care indus-try, and include an ex-panded environmen-tal awareness section. Expert Advice
“Because properly maintained vehicles perform more safe-ly and dependably for drivers and their families, the Car Care Council is committed to providing useful information and tools for motorists, like the newly updated, easy-to-follow ‘Car Care Guide.’ to help take the mystery out of auto service and re-pair,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. How To Get The In-
formation Available in English and Spanish, individ-ual copies of the new guide can be ordered, free, from www.car-care .org/car-care -guide. For more in-formation, visit www.carcare.org or follow the Car Care Council on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinter-est.
