“The Edible, Ecological, & Easier Garden”
Tired of constantly battling weeds, fertil-izing, mulching, and watering? Annual vegetable gardens and traditional home landscaping are a lot of work! Turns out there’s another way to do it, which is mod-eling our gardens af-ter nature to be more ecologically balanced and abundant. Learn about some key tech-niques, such as deep sheet mulching, build-ing supportive plant guilds, choosing har-dy and disease-free edibles, and designing for passive rainwater harvest, to make your landscape productive and beautiful with less
work and no chemi-cals. Imagine a day when your garden is dripping with delec-table fruits, flowers buzzing with happy pollinators, and soil crawling with fertili-ty-building critters all while you spend more time laying back in the hammock! Nicole is the owner of Deeply Rooted Design, based out of Frederick Coun-ty, Maryland, and will be at Kettle Creek at 10 am on Saturday, August 1 to share her knowledge. Pre-reg-istration required by Weds, July 29. Cost: $10/non-members, $8/EE Center mem-bers.
Kettle Creek Envi-ronmental Education Center is located at 8050 Running Valley Road in Stroudsburg,
PA. For more informa-tion, please call 570-629-3060 or visit www.mcconservation.org.

St. Paul’s Schoolhouse Anniversary
You won’t want to miss the celebration of the 150th anniversary of St. Paul’s School-house, near St. Paul’s UCC of Indianland, 787 Almond Road, Le-high Township. The event will be held on Saturday, August 1, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. in St. Paul’s Fellowship Hall. Journey back 150 years to the Civ-il War and learn how Dr. Peters treated bat-tle wounds. He will display the tools used years ago. Experience the confederate reen-actment. Bring your family and friends for a learning experience
and an enjoyable after-noon. Tour the 1865 one-room schoolhouse, re-stored by the Lehigh Township Historical Society. You may tour the little red brick schoolhouse through-out the day. You will learn how classes were conducted years ago without all of the conveniences found in schools today. There will be light refreshments served. There is no charge but donations are accept-ed. Help us celebrate this occasion! The lit-tle one and two-room
schoolhouses were an important part of the
township’s history!

(NAPSA)-Here’s news that’s created a buzz. Three-quarters of the world’s flow-ering plants and food crops rely on polli-nating insects such as bees and butterflies to help them reproduce. Unfortunately, bee populations are be-ing threatened by a range of issues such as colony collapse disorder, pesticides, mites, disease and cli-

mate change. Butterfly populations are also at risk. The good news is that gardeners can help restore balance by creating habitats that encourage polli-nators to thrive.
Bees and butterflies need places to live and breed in, and food to eat. The plants that provide this food also need pollinators to help them reproduce, so planting gardens that are friendly to bees and butterflies is a win-win situation. Pollination occurs naturally as small creatures forage for food, carrying pollen from plant to plant as they go. That is why it’s important to of-fer them a “buffet” of attractive flowers throughout the sea-sons, and to have suf-ficient natural habitats
so that they don’t have to travel far to find what they need. Here are 10 easy ways
to help: 1) BEE friendly to bees! Honeybees are not aggressive; they sting only as a defense mechanism. 2) Plant trees, shrubs and flowering plants to increase food and shelter for bees and butterflies. 3) Create a seasonal buffet for pollinators by planting perenni-
al flowers with a mix of colors, shapes and scents in containers, window boxes and plant beds. 4) Choose perenni-als with simple, single rather than double flowers to make nec-tar and pollen more accessible to bees and butterflies. 5) Cut and use gar-den flowers for bou-quets to encourage re-blooming and to prolong the foraging window for pollina-
tors. 6) Use beautiful native plants such as echinacea, coreopsis, sunflowers and but-
terfly milkweed for at least 75 percent of your garden. 7) Water, weed andContinued on Page 14

fertilize soil appro-priately to create a healthy garden that minimizes pests and diseases. 8) Provide clean wa-ter for insects in shal-low bowls, birdbaths and ponds, or let fresh water drip over stones. 9) Imperfection is
OK! Bees and but-terflies may damage leaves and flowers while breeding and feeding. Create areas of natural habitat with old stumps, fallen branches and tall grass for nesting. 10) Help convert small parcels of land into community gar-dens and green spaces to create closely linked areas for bees and but-terflies to visit.
Burpee offers a wide range of seeds and plants that are attrac-tive to bees and but-terflies. All of Burpee’s seeds are Non-GMO.

(NAPSA)-Spring may have sprung, but is your sprinkler ready? Before you ramp up your wa-tering this season, it might be time to
spruce up your sprin-klers to stop wasting water, save money, and promote a healthy lawn or garden. If you have an irri-gation system, chanc-

es are it has been dormant for the past several months and could use some main-tenance to get in shape for the spring and
summer growing sea-son. A home with an automatic irrigation system that isn’t prop-erly programmed or maintained can waste
as much as 30,000 gal-lons of water annual-ly! Take a few minutes to check your systemContinued on Page 15
Spruce Up Your System
Continued from Page 14
for common problems such as leaks or mal-functioning sprinkler heads. In fact, just one broken sprinkler head could waste up to 25,000 gallons of wa-ter and more than $90 over a six-month irri-gation season-the cost of about 300 daffodil bulbs. To get started, fol-low these four simple steps-inspect, connect, direct and select: • Inspect. Check your system for clogged, broken or missing sprinkler heads. If you’re not the do-it-yourself type, go with a pro-look for an irrigation profession-al certified through a WaterSense labeled irrigation program to help maintain your system. • Connect. Exam-ine points where the sprinkler heads con-nect to pipes or hoses. If water is pooling in your landscape, you could have a leak in your system. A leak as small as the tip of a ballpoint pen (1⁄32nd of an inch) can waste
about 6,300 gallons of water per month. • Direct. Experts estimate that as much as half of the water we use outdoors is being wasted due to evapo-ration, wind or runoff caused by inefficient irrigation methods and systems. Redirect sprinklers to apply water only to your lawn or prized plants, not your driveway or sidewalk! • Select. An im-properly scheduled irrigation controller can waste a lot of wa-ter. Update your sys-tem’s schedule with the seasons, or select a WaterSense labeled controller to take the guesswork out of scheduling. Properly main-tained irrigation sys-tems are the key to
healthy landscapes and outdoor water savings. So remem-ber to add “sprinkler spruce-up” to your spring- cleaning list this year! You can learn more about maintaining a water-smart yard, search for a certified
irrigation profession-al, or view a list of WaterSense labeled ir-rigation controllers by visiting the U.S. Envi-ronmental Protection Agency’s WaterSense website at www.epa.gov/watersense/out-door.
(NAPSI)—Edible gardening has become a cultural phenome-non. The need to save money at the grocery store and the desire to have better-tasting fruits and vegetables has sparked an in-
crease in home gar-dening. According to the Garden Writers Association, 41 million U.S. households have a vegetable garden and 37 percent plan to expand the size of their edible garden

this year. Do you want to take the first step? Consid-er growing tomatoes in a container right on your patio or balcony. “Growing toma-toes is one of the most popular forms of ed-ible gardening,” says Bayer Advanced™ Garden Expert Lance
Walheim, author of “Vegetable Garden-ing.” “They can be grown from seeds or plants and they make an excellent addition to a salad.”
Tips For SuccessfulTomato Growing
• Choose your tomato: The Patio Hybrid tomato was
developed just for containers, but you can also grow variet-ies such as Celebrity, Early Girl, Sweet Tan-gerine, or Northern Exposure. • Containers: The bigger the better, but containers that are at least five gallons areContinued on Page 16

the best size for pro-moting growth. Make sure the container has a hole in the bottom for drainage. • Soils and fertiliza-tion: Use a high-qual-ity potting soil and fertilize twice a month. • When to water: The rule of thumb is to water the base of the plant when the top two inches of soil have dried. Contain-er-grown tomatoes can require daily wa-tering as the plant gets bigger. • Destructive in-sects and diseases: Whiteflies and toma-to hornworms like to eat tomatoes. Diseas-es such as blight and powdery mildew can harm your plants as well. The brand-new
Bayer Advanced Na-tria™ Insect, Disease and Mite Control RTU contains sulphur and pyrethrins to control insects and diseases that affect tomatoes in one ready-to-spray application. (NAPSA)-Whether it’s a vacation road trip or your daily commute to work, when the temperatures climb higher on the outside, things are also heating up under the hood of your car. Here are some tips that can help to keep you on the road to safety and conve-nience. • Check Your Bat-tery. If you have an older vehicle or you’ve had your battery for more than three years, you should have it tested. While it is common to hear of car battery failure
during the cold winter months, heat is just as hard on your battery. Warmer temperatures can evaporate battery fluid, causing damage to internal plates and speeding up corrosion. • Top Off Or Change Fluids. Engine flu-ids are a key compo-nent in keeping your car running during the summer months. When fluid levels are low, the cooling effect is decreased and could result in overheating. Check your vehicle fluids including motor oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid and brake fluid.
Keeping Your Car Cool in Warmer Weather
• Check Engine Belts And Hoses For Cracks And Wear. Look for leaks and feel to determine if the hoses are firm and pli-able. Pay special atten-tion to places where hoses are connected and clamped. Do not attempt to touch any hoses or belts after you have been driving your vehicle, as they will be hot and could cause burns and seri-ous injury. • Cool Your Engine. Your engine works extra hard during the summer and relies on the cooling sys-tem to protect it from overheating. To keep your cooling system in good working con-dition, you should
flush your system and replace the coolant as recommended by the manufacturer. You can also try us-ing a radiator coolant additive, such as Pur-ple Ice by premium synthetic lubricant manufacturer Royal Purple. Purple Ice is
designed to improve your engine’s perfor-mance, help prevent overheating and keep the system clean. Plus, it’s compatible to use with antifreeze or straight water. For more informa-tion, visit www.royal-purple.com.
