Since June 6, 2002, Families First has made a tremendous impact in the Pen Ar-gyl Area School Dis-trict, initiating men-toring programs for middle school and high school students and an after-school tutoring and home-work assistance pro-gram in the middle school. To date, we have served over 2,000 families with hous-ing, food, counseling, parenting, insurance, education, and health issues. We coordinate a very special holiday adopt-a-family pro-gram which provided Christmas gifts for 94 families with 203 chil-dren this past holiday season. All of our pro-grams are at no cost to Pen Argyl area School District residents. By providing a “hand-up,” we are working to create healthy and productive family members who make positive choices and succeed in school and in the community

Extension Cords Extension cords are a convenient way to provide power right where you need it when working in or around your home, but using them improper-ly can be dangerous. • Extension cords should be used only on a temporary basis. • Make sure exten-sion cords are prop-erly rated for their intended use, indoor or outdoor, and meet or exceed the power needs of the appliance or device being used. • Inspect cords for cracked, frayed, loose or bare wires, and loose connections. • Never use a cord that feels hot. • Don’t run exten-sion cords through walls or ceilings. This may cause the cord to overheat, creating a serious fire hazard. • Don’t nail or sta-ple electrical cords to walls or baseboards.

• Make sure cords are not pinched in doors, windows or un-der heavy furniture, which could dam-age the insulation. • Keep extension cords out of high-traf-fic areas such as door-

ways or walkways. • Insert plugs ful-ly so no part of the prongs is exposed when the exten-sion cord is in use. • Ensure that all extension cords are certified by a nation-ally recognized testing laboratory such as UL, CSA or ETL, and al-ways read the manu-facturer’s instructions.

Rain barrel lids should also be tightly secured to prevent mosquito infestations. Secure rain barrels to also pro-tect children and pets from falling in. Over-flow valves should always direct water away from structures

to prevent water dam-age to homes or sheds. In addition, to reduce risk of falls and injury, homeowners should be certain that water is not directed toward sidewalks, driveways or other areas where foot traffic is common.
