Serving God through Hospitality at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church by Jackie Legg Wash and Joy Johnson Brunswick Stew Luncheon Honoring First Responders 2012-13 St. Andrew’s has an amazing 100-year legacy of hospitality beginning in the founding years of our church. Have you ever won- dered how hospitality began at St. Andrew’s; why it played such an important part in our early formation; and how it has main- tained its vital role into the year 2019? The answer lies in the background of our founding men and women who were well schooled in Biblical hospitality. They knew from their childhood Bible stories the importance of helping strangers, feeding the poor, caring for widows and orphans, and welcoming guests into their homes and church. They knew that Abraham welcomed three strangers and found that he was feeding two an- gels and God. They knew the miraculous story of Jesus feeding the 5,000 and celebrating wedding feasts. They knew how disci- ples were welcomed into the homes of new believers throughout Asia. Most of all, they understood that hospitality, which demon- strates our love for one another and desire to make each person feel at home, welcome, and safe, is inspired by the Bible. The early founders of St. Andrew’s didn’t call a tax collector down from a sycamore tree as Jesus did when he called, “Zachaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today,” but they followed the very same principles of hospitality, and here we are, 100 years later, maintaining the legacy that was passed on to us. Some of our parishioners remember hospitality events from the 40’s and 50’s; many recall the hospitality of the 60’s through the 80’s, and even more clearly remember the 90’s until today. Through our church bulletin and email requests for memories, parish- ioners generously shared their favorite events and the leaders responsible for creating them. From their responses, the unbelieve- able list that follows contains their favorite events for which our parishioners rolled up their sleeves to chop and dice, stitch and sew, hammer and paint, set up, clean up, wash, and sweep…but mainly to be part of something so much bigger. Volunteering allowed each the opportunity to be part of St. Andrew’s loving community, to welcome one another and make one another feel included, valued and loved. As we begin our second century at St. Andrew’s, we are aware that much has changed in our church, in our city, in our country and in the world since 1919, but one thing that has not changed is the importance of hospitality: sharing God’s love with one an- other and with strangers. So what role do each of us play? Yes, each of us! As with the apostles, we’re all called to join the team.

St. Andrew’s has an amazing 100-year legacy of hospitality beginning in the founding years of our church. Have you ever won-dered how hospitality began at St. Andrew’s; why it played such an important part in our early formation; and how it has main-tained its vital role into the year 2019? Hospitality Memories

The Wharton Family

Karen Wharton - It all began with my mom, Dot Knopf! She was a circle member and coffee chairman, and she serves on the Hospitality Team. I taught Sunday school, was a circle member and serve on the Hospi-tality, Coffee, and Congregational Development Teams. Bobby’s family are frequent servers; Bobby orders food, cooks for church events, and is a vestry liaison for hospitality.

The Lyon Family’s memories of Hospitality at St. Andrew’s!

David Lyon – Mom first helped with a large dinner at St. Andrew’s for the basketball team awards dinner for players and coaches. Mrs. Lambiotte and Carol Ficklen were also there helping and all became life-long friends. Mom was off and running with the Women of the Church. Pretty soon, the old kitchen just wasn’t adequate for the number of people that the women were cooking for. They lobbied, raised money in different ways, and had it completely rebuilt with professional equipment.

Arthur Lyon - My mother, Helen Louise Stokely Lyon, will likely be remembered for her desire and ability to feed the masses. If a function required a meal, my mother could make it happen. It was exciting to be in the kitchen, but if the intensity became too much, I could always make myself useful at the dishwashing station.

Susanne Lyon Daley - It seemed that Mom was ALWAYS in the kitchen at St. Andrew’s. Mom’s greatest meals were the Candlelight Dinners the night before Holiday House and the celebration meal for the Consecration of the Rt. Rev. C. Charles Vache in 1976. Mom became known for her Consecration Chicken recipe. Dinner, for 200, was served right there on the lowest level of the Hampton Coliseum. Unbelievable!!

St. Andrew’s Holiday Bazaar and Holiday House Memories

David Lyon - A big fundraiser put on by the Women of the Church was Holiday House. All sorts of things were made to sell at this bazaar… beautiful hand-made children’s clothes, preserves and wreaths, George Sargeant’s golden elephants, and on and on. People lined up to get in.

Susan Lyon - Never to be forgotten were Esther Hillyer’s beautiful Kings and her pillowcases edged with hand-made lace. Helen and Francis Girton made INCRED-IBLE doll beds, advent calendars, and handmade toys. And how about Mary Lou Duberg’s homemade rolls and breads!

Happy Barnwell - We all worked extremely hard on our Holi-day House. Helen Girton and her husband spent all year making doll houses complete with furniture, rugs, books in bookcases, plus tester beds out of empty thread spools. Casey Barclay’s Raggedy Anne and Andy dolls were first to go. Everyone made items, cooked, served lunch, deco-rated Holiday House and were hostesses.

Susan Lyon - Holiday House in-

volved a church family opening their home, beautifully decorated with items to be sold later at Holiday House, for refreshments and house tours. This was magical. The “Holiday Homes” at Richard and Carolyn Abbitt’s, the Edelblute’s, and Jackie Legg’s, were breathtaking.

Our mentors invited us to join their teams!

Louise Ragland - I remember filling the pitchers with water outside to make the lemonade. Doris Hopkins had the ideas, and the younger ones helped with the muscle work.

Betsy Wolak - Mentors from the past that stand out in my mind are Florence Archibald and Doris Hopkins.

They invited me to join their circle back in 1972, when Terry and I first joined St Andrew’s, and I did. Agnes Brittingham encouraged me to join the Altar Guild. I helped Sara Lou Whitehead in the kitchen whenever she asked, which was a lot. I have served on almost every one of the hospitality teams mentioned in the bulletin because someone asked me to join! Lenten Dinners, Pancakes Sup-pers and 59’ers : Decade Favorites

Linda Coffman, Marshall Booker, David Franzman and others fondly remembered covered dish dinners, Shrove Tuesday pancakes, Mary Gibson’s 59’ers, Lenten Soup and Salad Suppers, plus Sunday brunches!

Thanks for all contributions. Memories have been edited for publication. Complete memories are available.

“Be hospitable to one another without grum-bling. As each has received a gift, employ it in serving one another, as good managers of the grace of God in its various forms.” From Peter’s First Letter 4:9-10
