We seriously went looking for ghosts!Hanging around with ODDO, you never know who you’re going to meet. Earlier this year, he introduced us to his friends at the Midwest Ghost Society (MGS), Raymond and Candy. They stopped by Open Door to show us some of the gadgets they use to detect ghosts and told us stories. It was a really great time, so we jumped at the chance to see them in action for a paranormal activity at the historic Sandwich Opera House. Brandon S. said he was especially excited because, “I have ghost locating apps on my cell phone that I like to use.”

MGS members and the Opera House’s Executive Director, Chris, welcomed us that night. Chris told us that the Sandwich Opera House has been home to many actors, performers, and city government officials throughout its 141 years of existence, and that some of them still haunt the halls. Our objective that night was to see if we could talk to anyone who still may reside there.

We first went to the basement, where the MGS team set up equipment complete with a REM Pod, camera, recorders, and even a homemade muffin. Denise M. was one of the lucky people who got to use a K2 meter. She said, “It was kind of scary when the light started lighting up.” We asked the spirits down there if they were willing to talk to us, but they did not feel like coming out to play. After the basement, we went to the theater, where we met a spirit who admitted to being Mayor Julius Hummel from the late 1800s! He was able to answer yes/no questions by turning a flashlight on/off for us, which was one of the coolest things ever! Jim K. asked if “Godzilla was there.” Brandon P. wanted to know what car he likes best. Mr. Hummel turned on the light when Dean S. asked if he liked country music. For those who are not Sandwich history buffs, Mr. Hummel is known for a picture of him playing a fiddle while atop a donkey. So that was the perfect question for Dean S. to ask!

A BIG thank-you to the MGS for giving us this experience of a lifetime and to the Sandwich Opera House for allowing us to reside in the halls for our short stay. Jeff H. said, “It was a fun way to spend a Saturday night!” And thanks to ODDO, of course, for the meetup!

Group picture after surviving the ghosts!

This flashlight seriously turned on by itself in the basement!

It was much scarier in the basementonce the lights went off!

Caterpillar: Days of CaringEach year, Caterpillar hosts a “Days of Caring” event as a part of their United Way Campaign. This is an opportunity for their employees to provide volunteer service to local nonprofits. This year, ten Caterpillar employees chose to spend a day helping Open Door, and the results were amazing!

The volunteer group visited several of our group homes, where they made an impact by painting a huge pergola, five wheelchair ramps, and the box of a large deck. Two gentlemen even helped out by hanging new shutters on one of our client homes. These outstanding gentlemen dedicated over 70 hours of labor to help improve our Open Door facilities. We truly appreciated the great help and support from the Caterpillar employees.

“Weaving… A Legacy”It is with a heavy heart that we mourn the passing of Dr. Robert Joseph Coleman, aka “Doc” Coleman. Even though it pains us to say goodbye to one of our longtime Open Door family members, it is also with immense gratitude that we celebrate his life and reflect upon his dedication, commitment, and influence.

Doc has been an integral thread in the tapestry of Open Door Rehabilitation Center ever since 1966, when his daughter, Cindy, joined our Open Door family. Since that time, Doc has played a myriad of pivotal roles at Open Door. He and his late wife, Edie, were both active members of the Parents Group. Doc joined Open Door’s Board of Directors in 1978 and, shortly thereafter, became the Board President. He held this honored position until 2011, and was then appointed Board President Emeritus. It was not uncommon for Doc to play whatever role was needed from him in any given moment for Open Door. For a brief time, Doc even served as interim Executive Director, because that is what was needed.

Former Executive Director Dave Baker, who worked directly with Doc for many years, remembers him as a very intelligent, thoughtful, and humble man. “Doc was a realist and a true optimist. He was willing to put in the long hours which greatly benefited Open Door. He always focused on what was good for the agency first. He was instrumental in the survival and success of the organization and played a major role in Open Door’s history,” Baker revealed.

As we reflect on Doc Coleman’s extensive accomplishments and contributions, we are reminded that a man’s legacy can be felt by many and have a lasting effect. Pericles, a historical and influential Greek statesman, once said that “What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others.” We are extremely grateful and blessed to have had Doc as a member of our Open Door family. Doc’s legacy has unquestionably been woven into the fabric of our hearts.
