Impressive safety record of over 40 yearsSafety and Quality Assurance are of primeimportance in achieving a valid approach to fieldinvestigations and delivery of clientrequirements. Robertson Geo has demonstratedan impressive safety record of over forty years oflogging services, based on the principlesoutlined in the International Association ofGeophysical Contractors Land GeophysicalSafety Manual.

These satisfy the requirements for its entire fieldservices department, design, manufacturing andsales activities.

An ongoing commitment to certifiedquality managementAs the world’s largest provider of slim-holelogging instrumentation, Robertson Geo designsand manufactures almost all equipment in-house.

Purchasers of equipment include waterauthorities, mining houses, civil engineeringconsultants, aid organisations, drilling contractorsand oil companies worldwide with loggingequipment currently used in over 150 countries.

This expertise, support and experience makes forthe offer of first-class services at competitive rates.

Robertson Geo has an ongoing commitment tocertified quality management and our QMS iscertified according to ISO 9001 by TÜV.

Robertson Geo is the only logging servicesprovider with a QMS certified to ISO 9001, andthe only company which comprehensivelycalibrates all of its logging systems. Establishedindustry references at ELGI Hungary and theDWLBC calibration pits (API) in Adelaide,Australia provide the reference models fornuclear tool calibrations. These two referenceswere used by Robertson Geo to establishcalibration benchmarks at the Deganwy facility, and to reference the formation response in theDeganwy calibration and test well facility.

Once a nuclear tool system (Probe + tool specificsource) is calibrated to these recognised Industrystandards, they are then run in the Deganwycalibration and test well facility to verify that thetool response is within tight tolerancesestablished from data gathered over many yearsand 1000’s of runs. All other non-nuclear toolsystems receive the same attention to detail andtest well verification prior to deployment.

Only after verification in the test well confirmingboth tool operational function and measurementcalibration are tools accepted for use.Verification reports and calibration records areprovided in the end of well reporting package.

Robertson Geo is the only logging services provider with a QMS certified to ISO 9001, comprehensively calibrating all of itslogging systems and uniquely using an on-site borehole for testing at its Deganwy test well and calibration facility.

Geophysical logging probe overviewHigh Resolution Acoustic Televiewer (HRAT):Provides a continuous high-resolution orientedultrasound image of the borehole wall. The probeuses a fixed acoustic transducer and a rotatingacoustic mirror to scan the borehole walls with afocussed ultrasound beam. The amplitude andtravel time of the reflected acoustic signal arerecorded as separate image logs.

High Resolution Optical Televiewer (Hi-OPTV):Provides a continuous very high resolutionoriented image of the borehole walls using aconventional light source. A unique opticalsystem based on a fisheye lens allows the probeto survey 360 degrees simultaneously. Thisinformation is processed in real time to producea complete ‘unwrapped’ image of the boreholeoriented to magnetic north. The probe offerssuperior resolution to the High ResolutionAcoustic Televiewer (HRAT) and producesimages in real colour.

Formation Density, Density Guardlog & Iron Ore Density: The Formation Density usesdual shielded detectors to provide a boreholecompensated density measurement with goodbed-boundary resolution. The Density GuardlogProbe offers an additional LL3 focussed electricalmeasurement with good vertical resolution anddepth of investigation.

Density Gamma: Offers a convenient alternativeto the standard Robertson Geo FormationDensity Probe whenever borehole diameter isrestricted and qualitative density measurementsare acceptable. One common application is inlogging through drill pipe when unstableborehole conditions prevent use of unprotectednuclear probes. The probe is unfocussed andindicates the average density of materialsurrounding the borehole.

Small Source Density: Stringent legislation onthe transport and handling of radioactivematerials increasingly prevents the use ofconventional density logging probes. The smallsource density probe provides calibrated andborehole-compensated density logs at sensiblelogging speeds using a very low activity 60Cogamma source that may not require a radiationlicence in certain territories.

Natural Gamma: The natural gamma probesmeasure the activities of naturally occurring orman-made isotopes. The probes are based onscintillation gamma detectors that measure thenatural gamma radiation released frompotassium and the decay products of uraniumand thorium in the borehole.

Neutron: Provides a calibrated boreholecompensated neutron porosity measurement inmud-filled open holes. It is the probe of choicefor quantitative formation fluid studies. A single-detector neutron probe is also available forqualitative porosity logging under most boreholeconditions, including through steel or plasticcasing and drill-pipe.

Spectral Gamma: Analyses the energy spectrumof gamma radiation from naturally occurring orman-made isotopes in the formationsurrounding a borehole. The probe corrects fortemperature drift in real-time by matching theacquired spectrum to base spectra of the mainnatural emitters, potassium, uranium andthorium determined during the tool mastercalibration. Available outputs are full spectrum(static mode only) and continuous logmeasurements of elemental concentrations.Borehole corrections are available for casingthickness, borehole diameter, formation densityand mud/fluid radioactivity for both centralizedand sidewalled tool positions.

Electric Log: The classic water-well combinationprobe combining shallow, medium and deeppenetrating resistivity measurements with Self-Potential (SP).

Focussed Electric (Guardlog): The focussedresistivity (LL3) measurement provides excellentvertical resolution and a reasonable depth ofinvestigation. The guard log replaces the classicElectric Log Probe in conditions of low mudresistivity and high formation resistivity.

Microresistivity: Provides a focussed padresistivity measurement with high verticalresolution combined with a caliper and naturalgamma.

Dual Focussed Induction: Provides twosimultaneous conductivity logs, corresponding to“medium” and “deep” radii of investigation intothe formation. The two depths of penetration areuseful in porous, permeable formations wherethe displacement of formation fluids by drillingmud creates an “invasion zone” with differentelectrical properties. The 1” focussed inductionprobe produces a single medium penetrationconductivity log. It finds particular application insmall diameter dry or plastic lined boreholesused for mineral exploration.

Magnetic Susceptibility: Based on the industrystandard Bartington Instruments™ product. It is alow frequency device and is specifically designedfor mining applications. The probe has excellentstability against pressure and temperaturevariations.

Temperature Conductivity: Provides acontinuous, depth-based measurement of fluidtemperature and conductivity. Both parameterscan be output in absolute and in differentialforms. A natural gamma detector is included forcorrelation purposes.

Impeller Flowmeter: Provides a continuous log ofvertical fluid velocity within a borehole. Two sizesof high sensitivity probes satisfy most boreholesize requirements and expected flow rates.

Heat-Pulse Flowmeter: Used to detect lowvertical flows within a borehole, below thethreshold limits of conventional impeller tools. The probe is designed for stationarymeasurements only. Normal logging practiceinvolves measurements at a series of depthsacross the zone of interest.

Induced Polarisation: Measures the chargeseparation or ‘chargeability’ in porous, water-saturated, mineralised rocks caused by thepassage of a low-frequency alternating current. The main cause of induced polarisation is acurrent- induced electron-transfer reactionbetween ions of an electrolyte in contact withgrains of semi-conducting metallic minerals.

Water Quality: Based on the industry standardOcean Seven 302™ probe manufactured byIdronaut Srl. The tool is available in ‘saline’ and‘fresh-water’ versions with different conductivityranges and available measurements. The probeenables a rapid, continuous profile to be taken ofall the selected parameters throughout theborehole either for direct use or as a guide forsubsequent sampling.

Water/Gas Sampler: Probes are used to recoverdiscrete samples of well fluid at a particular depthand to return it uncontaminated to the surface.

3-Arm Caliper: Provides a single continuous logof borehole diameter as recorded by threemechanically coupled arms in contact with theborehole wall. A number of sizes are available tosuit a range of well diameters. The caliper is auseful first log to determine the boreholeconditions before running more costly probes, orthose containing radioactive sources.

Borehole Geometry: Consists of a 4-arm calipercombined with a verticality measurement. Theprobe can replace the standard 3-arm caliperwith advantage where the borehole cross-section departs from circular, and wheredirectional information is required for wellcompletion studies and formation stress analysis.

Verticality: Provides accurate, continuousmeasurements of borehole inclination anddirection. These are output directly as log tracesor may be processed further to produce tabularand graphical outputs of borehole position, borehole drift and true vertical depth.

Gyro: Acquires borehole inclination/azimuth logsin situations where metal casing or magneticmaterials around the borehole prevent use of thestandard verticality probe. The 3D-magnetometerversion also acquires 3D-magnetic data forlocation of magnetic ore bodies.

4-Arm Dipmeter: Measures microresistivity andtool orientation data. These can be processed usingRG-Dip™ software to determine formation dips.

Full Waveform Sonic: Uses a dual-transmitterdual-receiver array to provide high qualityformation acoustic velocity data. Options areavailable for display of full waveform data andcement bond data (CBL) in cased boreholes.

PS Logger: Provides high resolution shear waveand compressional data in rock and soils atdepths up to 500m, from measurements within asingle borehole.

Surface Equipment OverviewMicrologger2: surface interface system forhandling logging data acquisition, whichsupports all Robertson Geo probes, includingacoustic and imaging tools.

Winlogger: MS Windows based operatingsystem for the Micrologger2, provides fieldacquisition capability. In-house processing, interpretation and reporting is undertaken.

Winches: Robertson Geo designs and builds its own range of winches of varying capacitiesfor deploying subsurface probes on 4-core or co-axial cable.

• Mini Winch • 1000m/2000m Winch

• 500m Winch • 2000m Marine Winch
