I.C.A.N! Basics

What is I.C.A.N!? Inclusive Community Activities with No Barriers (I.C.A.N!)I.C.A.N! services are offered in partnership with Between Friends and community recreation programs. Participants with disabilities choose, enroll, and participate without specialized support. Partner Program Leaders will provide the majority of guidance for the participant.

A Recreation Inclusion Facilitator (RIF) trained by Between Friends will be available to support the inclusion process.

Who Can Participate? To participate in ICAN! services, the participant must:

• Be a Between Friends member

• Fit the age range requirements of the community program

• Be independent in personal care and require minimal behaviour support

• Have an interest and desire to participate in the program

We recommend Between Friends Programs if a participant succeeds in an environment with higher level support.

What is a Recreation Inclusion Facilitator (RIF)?

RIFs are trained by Between Friends in inclusion, adaptations, and disability awareness. The RIF’s role includes:

• Supporting partner staff by providing advice on creating an inclusive environment, accessible programming, and best practices

• Parent communication to ensure member and family satisfaction

• Support program participants in inclusion to ensure a welcoming environment for all

• Monitor and track member’s progress towards goal set by the member and their family

Internal RIFs, Year Round Programs:

There are two kinds of RIFs that fulfill the same role: an external RIF, and internal RIF. An internal RIF refers to an individual hired, trained, and supervised by Between Friends.

External RIFs, Summer Camps:

An external RIF refers to an individual hired and supervised by the Community Partner. Between Friends completes training on inclusion and accessible programming. Before the start of camp, the RIF will provide training to their designated partner facility to educate the camp staff on the inclusion process and best practices. At least one camp staff will be a trained RIF. The RIF will also be monitoring the inclusion process throughout each day at camp and be available to all staff for support.

This guide is divided into 2 different partner sections:

1. Summer Camp Partners – Programs offered only in the summer

2. Year Round Partners – Programs offered year-round

› In Town – located within Calgary city limits

› Out of Town – located outside of Calgary city limits

Registration

When? Registration dates differ for each program!

Please take a look on the website of the program you are interested in for specific registration details. Once you are registered, please notify Between Friends about registration so we can hire and train a RIF in time for the start of the program.

Registration Process 1. Make sure that you have registered as a Between Friends Member. Visit our website’s registration page at https://betweenfriends.campbrainregistration.com/

2. Choose the I.C.A.N! Partner of your choice. The following guide lists our current partners. You can find detailed information regarding program offerings on each partner website.

3. Register with the I.C.A.N! Partner and pay their program fees accordingly. There is no cost for Between Friends RIF services thanks to a grant from Family & Community Support Services (FCSS).

4. Provide Between Friends with full details of your registration including: • Name of Program and Facility (Ex: Soccer, Southland Leisure Centre) • Days and times of programs This information is required to coordinate and hire a RIF for the program.

5. A week prior to camp, your assigned RIF will be in contact with you to review the participant’s goals, discuss the inclusion process, the participant’s abilities, and how to best meet their needs at the program.

For more information or to register with I.C.A.N! services, please contact Gilary Guzman at [email protected]
