ABOUT THE E100 8

How the E100 operates

The E100 enables the customer to use the copier as a networked PostScript printer and scanner. You can print to the E100 from networked Microsoft Windows computers, Apple Mac OS computers, and networked UNIX workstations running TCP/IP.

The E100 hardware and system software provide efficient image processing and printing controls.

A motherboard and a copier interface board process image data for printing and scanning. The motherboard includes a CPU that controls the image data transfer to and from the motherboard and runs the interpreter. The interpreter rasterizes the page description file and compresses the image pattern into memory using compression technology.

The interpreter outputs compressed raster data through the image frame buffer memory to the E100 copier interface board. The raster data is supplied to the copier, which then renders the final image on paper at maximum engine speed.

One 1GB high-speed DIMM (dual in-line memory module) on the motherboard holds the image data during printing.

When Fiery Scan uses the copier as a scanner, the E100 acquires image data from the copier, stores the data in memory, and then transmits it to the computer that requested the scan.

PRECAUTIONS 9

PrecautionsWhen you service the E100, observe the following precautions:

Report shipping damageIf there is evidence of shipping damage, save the shipping boxes and damaged parts. Immediately call the shipper to file a claim. Notify an authorized service/support center.

Do not change an existing networkThe E100 is probably connected to an existing Local Area Network (LAN) based on Ethernet hardware. The network is the link between the customer’s computer, existing laser printers, and other prepress equipment. Never disturb the LAN by breaking or making a network connection, altering termination, installing or removing networking hardware or software, or shutting down networked devices without the knowledge and express permission of the site administrator.

Do not assign an IP address to the E100Only the site administrator should assign an IP address to a network device, including the E100. If you enter an incorrect IP address for the E100, errors may occur on connected devices.

Avoid damaging printed circuit boards (PCBs)

Observe the following guidelines:

• Do not bend a printed circuit board.

• Hold a printed circuit board by opposing edges, rather than by corners.

Follow standard electrostatic discharge (ESD) precautions

When you handle electronic components, you must follow standard electrostatic discharge (ESD) precautions. For more information, see “Standard electrostatic discharge precautions” on page 11.

COMPONENTS 28

Motherboard

The motherboard includes a 2.6GHz Intel Core2 Duo CPU that controls the image data transfer to and from the motherboard and runs the interpreter. The interpreter rasterizes the page description file and compresses the image pattern into memory using compression technology.

When you must remove and replace the E100 motherboard, do the following.

• Transfer the DIMM, CPU, and security chip from the old motherboard. Replacement motherboards ship with thermal compound for use when transferring the CPU.

• Make sure that the new motherboard solves the problem you are troubleshooting before you transfer options to it. Transferring options permanently customizes the new motherboard so that it cannot be returned to inventory and cannot be installed in another E100. If the new motherboard does not solve the problem, do not transfer options to it. Instead, return the new motherboard to inventory.

• Do not reinstall system software at the same time that you install a new motherboard. Reinstalling system software is not necessary when installing a new motherboard and can result in an error if done before transferring options to the new motherboard.

• BIOS chips are not interchangeable. Do not transfer the BIOS chip from the old motherboard onto the new motherboard. Doing so can damage the E100.

• Do not install a new HDD at the same time that you install a new motherboard.

It is unlikely that both the HDD and the motherboard are defective; therefore, avoid replacing both to solve one problem. If troubleshooting strategies (checking cables and connections, and so forth) do not resolve the problem and you suspect either the HDD or the motherboard is at fault, use the following order: replace the HDD; install system software; verify the problem still exists; and then move on to other procedures, such as replacing the motherboard. Otherwise, you may need to return the E100.

Hard disk drive

The factory-installed HDD (hard disk drive) is formatted and E100 software, including operating software, system software, network drivers, and copier fonts, has been preinstalled. Because the HDD stores spooled print jobs, available disk space is displayed on the control panel.

If the HDD is replaced, you must install the system software on the new HDD. If you are replacing the HDD, you need the following:

• The appropriate system software on DVD

• The latest version of user software (for networked computers that will be printing to the E100)

Before you replace the HDD, if possible, print the following system pages:

• Configuration page records the customer’s current Setup configuration (custom settings are lost when you install system software).

• Font List details what fonts are resident on the E100. Along with the fonts that are provided on the System Software DVD, the customer may have installed additional fonts that are deleted when the system software is installed.

For information about installing system software, see page 58.

Proper handling

Handle the HDD with care:

• When you handle electronic components, such as an HDD, follow standard ESD precautions. For more information, see “Standard electrostatic discharge precautions” on page 11.

• Keep magnets and magnet-sensitive objects away from the HDD.

• Do not remove the screws on top of the HDD. Loosening these screws voids the warranty.

• Never drop, jar, or bump the HDD.

• Handle the HDD by its sides and avoid touching the printed circuit board.

• Allow the HDD to reach room temperature before installation.

HDD problems may be a result of the following:

• Loose or faulty connection

• Faulty HDD

Before you decide that the HDD must be replaced, make sure that the connectors on the HDD and the motherboard are intact, properly aligned, and firmly connected. If the pins are bent, gently straighten them with needlenose pliers.

COMPONENTS 53

TO REMOVE THE HDD

1. If you are replacing the HDD with a new HDD, allow the network administrator the opportunity to print the Job Log and save any custom simulation and output profiles. If possible, print the following:

• Configuration pages provide records of any installed options and the customer’s current Setup configuration.

• Font List lists the fonts currently on the HDD. Along with the fonts provided, the customer may have installed additional fonts.

For information about how to print the Configuration page and Font List, see Configuration and Setup, which is part of the user documentation set.

2. Shut down and open the E100 (see page 14).

3. Remove the power cable from the HDD.

4. Remove the data cable from the HDD by pulling the connector (not the cable) straight out from the HDD.

TROUBLESHOOTING 73

TroubleshootingThe following sections identify the sources of common problems that may occur with the E100 and suggest ways of correcting them.

These sections do not attempt to provide troubleshooting information for attached computers such as PCs, the copier, or extensive networks. Refer problems in these areas to the appropriate service departments and site administrators.

The troubleshooting process is designed to allow you to eliminate the most obvious causes of failure before you progress to more complex issues. “Where problems occur” on page 73 gives an overview of the E100 components and indicates areas most likely to require troubleshooting.

• Try a phone check before you go to the customer site.

“Before visiting a customer site” on page 74 suggests areas you should check before making a service call to the customer site. With a phone call, you can find out if the problem is a simple operating failure or a failure caused by a network or configuration change. You can ask the customer to check for loose cables on the back of the copier and loose connections at a power strip or outlet.

• Check for obvious causes of problems.

• Check network connections.

“At a customer site” on page 75 takes you through the initial visual checks you should make when you arrive at the customer site.

“Checking the network connection” on page 75 provides guidelines for checking the network connections between the copier and the computers to which it is connected, as well as information on several printing problems.

Where problems occur

The E100 is a built-in print server for the copier, and is generally part of a configuration like the one shown in Figure 3. Problems may occur in one of the following areas:

• The E100 or copier

• The interface between the E100 and copier

• The interface between the E100 and computers that print to it

Page 74: Service Guide · 2021. 3. 7. · In this guide, the Fiery E100 Color Server is referred to as the E100. The following information is included: † How to inspect, remove, reseat,

TROUBLESHOOTING 74

Before visiting a customer site

Before you make a service call to a customer site, talk to the customer on the phone, and check the following items:

1. Does the copier work?

If the copier works, but the user cannot print the E100 Test Page, a service call is probably required.

2. Is the failure caused by a simple operating problem?

• Is there a printing problem?

– Does the E100 Test Page fail to print?

– Does the E100 fail to respond to a print command?

– Does printing seem to take a long time?

– Is print quality poor?

– Does the E100 fail to appear in the list of printers?

If the answer to any of these questions is yes, refer the customer to Configuration and Setup on the User Documentation CD or Command WorkStation Help.

If the customer has followed the suggested corrective actions and has failed to solve the problem, be prepared to make a service call. Keep a log of the failures the customer has observed.

3. Has the customer made any network changes?

If network changes have occurred, request that the customer’s site administrator verify the E100 network requirements.

4. Is the user having printing problems with a particular image file?

If there are problems with files from particular applications, the user may be more successful using different print settings.

If your telephone call fails to solve the problem, proceed to the next phase, the preliminary on-site checkout.

Page 75: Service Guide · 2021. 3. 7. · In this guide, the Fiery E100 Color Server is referred to as the E100. The following information is included: † How to inspect, remove, reseat,

TROUBLESHOOTING 75

At a customer site

Before you remove the E100:

• Make sure that the external cables are connected properly.

If all the connectors are in place and the problem still exists when the copier is powered on, proceed to the next phase of troubleshooting.

NOTE: For convenience, the procedure “To check internal connections” on page 25 is repeated here under Troubleshooting.

When disassembling, checking, and reassembling the copier, Sse other documentation for guidelines.

Checking connections

The most common cause of a hardware problem is a faulty or loose connection. Before you replace any components, check all external connections, and then check all internal connections.

For more information, see the following:

• “Checking connections” on page 24.

• “To check internal connections” on page 25.

Checking the network connection

Printing problems may arise if the network hardware or software is not set up properly or does not match the network settings on the E100. Problems may also arise when printing from a specific application or printing a particular file.

Most of these problems show up as printing problems and do not necessarily indicate a E100 malfunction. The customer’s site administrator can eliminate many printing problems without requiring you to make a service call. The site administrator deals with:

• Error conditions on the copier

• Network connection problems that result in the copier not appearing in the list of printers on the customer’s computers

NOTE: If the copier does not appear in the list of printers on the network, there may be another device on the network with the same IP address.

• Conflicting network settings in Setup and on the customer’s computers

• Printing problems caused by inappropriate Setup options

• Application-specific printing errors caused by missing or incorrectly installed printer description files

Page 76: Service Guide · 2021. 3. 7. · In this guide, the Fiery E100 Color Server is referred to as the E100. The following information is included: † How to inspect, remove, reseat,

TROUBLESHOOTING 76

Printing

If the customer can print the E100 Test Page, but cannot print a job from a computer on the network, you may have to make a service call. However, first make sure that the site administrator has done the following:

• Checked all components of the network, including cables, connectors, terminators, network adapter boards, and network drivers.

• Activated the network and communicated with other printers.

• Confirmed that the applicable network settings in Setup (such as AppleTalk zone, IP address, subnet mask, and gateway address) match the settings used in the network.

When you make a service call, check the E100 connector panel to make sure that the appropriate network connection is in place. Print quality problems are difficult to trace. Before you try to troubleshoot print quality problems, print a Test Page to make sure that the copier does not need servicing or adjusting. Also, make sure that the correct paper is loaded in the copier.

NOTE: EPS file generation is not completely standardized among applications. Some users may encounter problems while printing certain EPS files.

If the copier does not print

The following table lists possible causes and solutions when the copier does not print.

System is searching for a non-existent DHCP server. DHCP is enabled by default on the E100, but the customer’s network is not using DHCP.

• If the customer’s network is using DHCP:

–Network cable or connectionis faulty

–Network is faulty

–Ethernet interface on the motherboard is faulty

1. If the problem persists, ask the network administrator to change the default in E100 Network Setup.

2. If neither LED on the designated Ethernet port is lit on the E100, check the cable connection to the E100 and the network. Make sure that the cable is the correct type.

3. If the network cable is the correct type and is properly connected to the E100, connect a new network cable to the E100.

4. Ask the network administrator to check other devices on the network.

If other devices are not functioning, the problem may be with the network.

5. If the rest of the network is functioning properly and the problem persists, clear the CMOS (see page 57).

6. Replace the motherboard.

Scanning

Problems with scanning files or with the E100 detecting scanned files

Loose, incorrect, or missing interface connection between the E100 and the copier

1. Check and reseat the interface cable between the E100 and thecopier.

Make sure that the cable is the right type (cross-over RJ-45).

2. Power off/on the copier.

3. Replace the interface cable.

Test page fails to print Print engine is notready to print

1. Make sure that the copier is powered on and ready to print.

2. Check the copier touch panel for indications or messages about the copier status.

A problem with the connection between the E100 and the copier

1. Make sure that the E100 power button LED is lit. If not, press and hold the power button for a few seconds to turn on the E100.

2. Power off/on the copier.

3. Make sure that the Network Scanning option is available from the copier control panel.

4. Check again that the copier interface cable is present and properly connected to the E100 and the copier.

5. Check again that the copier interface board is present and properly connected to the motherboard.

6. Replace the copier interface cable.

7. Replace the copier interface board.

8. If the problem persists, you may need to service the copier.

Corrupted system software Reinstall system software.

Faulty HDD Replace the HDD.

If replacing the HDD does not correct the problem, make sure that you install the old HDD back in the E100.

E100 appears on the list of printers on the customer’s workstation, but certain jobs do not print

PostScript error Make sure that Print to PostScript Error in Setup is set to Yes. Check for error messages on the E100 output.

Application problem 1. Print a job from a different application to determine if the problem is associated with a particular application.

2. Make sure that the connection between the E100 and workstation is working by downloading a Test Page from the workstation or printing a simple file, such as a text file.

3. Resend the problem file.

Configuration page is completely or mostly blank

• Missing, incorrect, or faulty DIMM

• Corrupted system software

1. Check the DIMM and reseat it to remove any oxidation on the connectors.

2. Reinstall system software.

3. Clear the CMOS (see page 57).

4. Replace the motherboard.

A print job stalls or stops after one or a few pages

PostScript or application error

1. Cancel the E100 print job.

2. If this fails to clear the problem, power off/on the copier.

Missing, incorrect, or faulty DIMM or faulty DIMM connections

1. Power off the E100; check for missing DIMM and reseat the DIMM to remove any oxidation on the connectors.

2. Clear the CMOS (see page 57).

Color quality isnot consistent

Problem with thecopier

Test the copier and service, if necessary (see the service documentation that accompanies the copier).

File or applicationproblem

Print a different color Test Page from another application.

If the quality of the Test Page is good, there may be a file or application problem.

Out of calibration or calibration information/curves on the active partition are corrupted

1. Start ColorWise Pro Tools from a client computer, click the Calibrator icon, and then click Restore Device in the Calibrator window.

Restore Device restores the E100 calibration information to the factory defaults.

If restoring default calibration does not solve the problem, you may need to service the copier.

2. If restoring default calibration fixes the color quality, the custom calibration may have been the cause of the problem. Ask the site administrator to recalibrate the E100. For details, see Color Printing, which is part of the user documentation set.

3. If the problem persists after recalibration, the calibration information on the HDD may be corrupt. Reinstall system software.
