WELCOME. We’re glad to gather together as a community of faith today. No matter where you are on the journey of faith, you are welcome here, to join in worship and service. All are invited to a time of refreshment and conversation immediately following worship in St. Andrews Hall (down the steps outside the sanctuary, and to the left). If you are new to this community of faith, we rejoice in your presence with us. Remember, we’re not strangers, but rather friends who journey together, following the Lord Jesus Christ.

Please turn off all cellular phones and watch alarms during worship. Please refrain from using flash photography during the worship service.

CALL TO CONFESSION

Silence God of mercy, we begin this Lenten season in confession. We do not live according to your ways, but according to our own. We condone violence, participate in systems of injustice, and use power to our own advantage at the expense of others. Forgive us we pray, when we are tempted to follow paths other than those you set before us. Help us to turn from evil in its many guises. In covenantal love, remember us, we pray, and be for us, once more and always, an ark of safety and new life. In Jesus’ name we pray.

* AFFIRMATION OF FAITH from A Brief Statement of Faith

We trust in God the Holy Spirit everywhere the giver and renewer of life.

The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the Church.

The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women and men to all ministries of the Church.

In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing,

to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in Church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace.

Worship Note

CANTATA – MARCH 11, 11:00AM SERVICE - This is an incredible story. It is about 4 young boys who lived in Jerusalem. Their names were Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego, and Daniel. They refused to obey the king Nebuchadnezzar and ended up in a fiery furnace! Come see how they got out of that hot spot! Our sanctuary, March 11, 11:00 service presented by the youth and children of the church. Invite friends and family to hear and see the story.

***WITHIN OUR PRAYERS***

Our loving sympathy and prayers are extended to Jane Edmondson and family on the death of her brother, Robert Pasolli, on February 9. The red rosebud in the Sanctuary this morning is given to the glory of God in celebration of the birth of Declan Patrick Kenney, son of Joe and Tara Kenney, on February 11. The proud grandparents are Ed and Kirsten Kenney, proud great-grandparents are Duane and Elizabeth McKenna, and the proud aunt and uncle are Liz Tamburri and Michael.

Help carry one another’s burden, and in this way you will obey the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2

LENTEN SMALL GROUP - Join the “Holy Conversation” small group that will be meeting Wednesday evenings during Lent. If you don’t have time to attend an ongoing small group then dip your toe in with Rob Ransom on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 – 8:30 pm in the Bethany Room. The group will be using the book, Holy Conversation: Talking About God in Everyday Life by Richard Peace as the launching point for weekly conversations. The study reminds us, “We need to be able to move beyond a carefully crafted formula into the heart of the gospel with all its mystery, wonder, hope and clarity.” Pick up your copy of “Holy Conversation” in the church office. Wednesdays, February 21 and 28, and March 7, 14 and 21 in the Bethany Room (behind the sanctuary).

MCLEAN INTERFAITH COALITION - The next workday for the McLean Interfaith Coalition (MIC) with Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia is Wednesday, February 21, from 8:45 to 3:30. The work site is in Herndon where we will be rehabbing an existing townhouse. Volunteers supply their own lunch and Habitat supplies water and tools. If you’re interested in joining volunteers from other McLean congregations on February 21, contact Mary Frase, the Lewinsville representative to MIC, at [email protected] or (703) 536-4091.

DEMENTIA: WHAT WE ALL NEED TO KNOW - February 25th at 12:15 after the second service in the chapel. Did you ever wonder about what constitutes dementia? How do you recognize it? Are there different kinds of dementia? What can we do to postpone the onset or slow down the progression of dementia? How can we help our loved ones who are experiencing dementia? All these questions and more will be addressed at this presentation hosted by the Older Adult Council, and held in connection with our collaboration with Chesterbrook Residences and the other sponsoring congregations, Immanuel Presbyterian Church and Temple Rodef Shalom. Licensed clinical social worker with Jewish Social Services Agency (JSSA), Rebecca Porter, who has previously spoken at Lewinsville on topics related to aging, will be the speaker. This is a topic relevant for all of us as we ponder how these issues affect ourselves, our aging parents, and our children. A light lunch will be provided.

SINGLE SENIORS - Whether married or single, old or young, all are invited by Single Seniors to their next monthly fellowship lunch to hear Roland McElroy talk about his career and his new book, "The Best President the Nation Never Had - A Memoir of Working with Sam Nunn." It will be in the Chapel, March 9 at 11:30 am. Please bring $5 for the lunch. For further information and to RSVP, contact Lois Dokken ([email protected] / 703 789-0617) or Wendy Maiwurm ([email protected] / 703 759-6705).
