PRELUDE TO WORSHIP Stephen Dean “I Rejoiced”

GREETINGS, ANNOUNCEMENTS, and FELLOWSHIPReviewing the Prayer Concerns

INTROIT “Seeds Scattered and Sown” Dan Feiten

*CALL TO WORSHIP One: We gather in the presence of God, the Creator of all that is. All: We gather bringing our needs, and the needs of the world. One: God knows what being human is all about. The Holy One created us in the image of God, after the likeness of God. All: But the image is tarnished and dull. Our faith is frail and we long to have God’s light rekindled within us. One: We come with our hopes and our fears, admitting that life lived apart from God’s light leads to oblivion. All: We come to the Lord’s table just as we are, with our fears and hopes, to be fed by his love. Let us worship God.

1CALL TO CONFESSION – Liturgist Christine Duryea For God so loved the world that He gave His only son. God has done the loving

and the work. All we need to do is believe and accept that we are loved. At times we stubbornly refuse God’s love. We want to live life on our terms. But when we come to our senses, we know God is there ready to hear our confession, and embrace us as only a loving parent can.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION – Congregation O God of the ages, in your sight nations rise and fall, and pass through times

of peril. Now when our land is divided and tempers flare, be near to judge and save. Grant that your Spirit may so move every human heart, that the barriers which divide us may crumble, suspicions disappear, and hatreds cease, and that, with our divisions healed, we may live in justice and peace. May leaders be led by your wisdom; may they search your will and see it clearly. If we have turned from your way, help us to reverse our ways and repent. Give us your light and your truth to guide us, through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of this world, and our Savior. Amen.

KYRIE, No. 437               Wayfaring StrangerYou are the Lord, giver of mercy!

You are the Christ, giver of mercy! You are the Lord, giver of mercy!

SILENT MEDITATION AND THE LORD’S PRAYER Our custom is to join hands for the Lord’s Prayer.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day, our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

WORDS OF ASSURANCEOur nation was founded by men and women who believed their destinies were

shaped by God. Their past identity did not define them, only their future. We are invited to shake off the old self and embrace the new person that God would have each of us become. Friends: believe the good news of the gospel. In Jesus Christ we are a new creation.

Listening Assistive Devices Are Available for worshipers who would like to enhance their ability to hear the service.  Large-print Copies of the Hymns are also available.   If you find it difficult to find a parking space close to the door, there is reserved parking available between the orange traffic markers.  Please inquire at the door if you need assistance.

One Solitary Life – Paul of Tarsus, First Christian TheologianThis study group is using N.T. Wright’s recent book Paul – A Biography.

Whatever your opinion of the apostle, he was a seminal figure whose passion and intellect shaped the early Christian movement. Join us to find out why. Wright’s book is an excellent way to open up Paul’s letters, and the Acts of the Apostles. We will look at chapters 4 and 5. We meet Tuesday at 9 a.m., at the hone of Sara and Merrill Wood, 1372 California Street, Imperial Beach. If you need directions, call Pastor Steve at 714-448-9728.

THE FIRST TESTAMENT LESSON Psalm 130

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITHWe trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves,

and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in one body of Christ, the church.

The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women and men to all ministries of the church.

In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God’s new heaven and new earth, praying, “Come, Lord Jesus!” Amen.

*THE HYMN RESPONSE                                                                      Paul E. HoffmanThere is nothing in the heav’ns above, nor in hidden depths of earth

that can keep the Savior’s love from us,for by his sinless death God’s Son has conquered ev’ry foe.

There is nothing left to fear.  For God’s love, God’s love is always near.

PASTORAL PRAYER and Response, No. 465 Converse What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear!

What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer!O what peace we often forfeit; O what needless pain we bear,

All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer!

THE GOSPEL LESSON  Mark 5:2-9, 21-29

SERMON Rev. Stephen J. Mather“Healing”

SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION and RESPONSE             Eternal God, we give you thanks for this holy mystery in which you have

given yourself to us.  Grant that we may go into the world in the strength of your Spirit, to give ourselves for others in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

*BENEDICTION and POSTLUDE L. Benson/R Lau “Now We Give You Thanks”

ReflectionWhat Is the Question?

Ask the questions that have no answers.Invest in the millennium. Plant sequoias.

Say that your main crop is the forestthat you did not plant,

that you will not live to harvest.Say that the leaves are harvested

when they have rotted into the mold.Call that profit. Prophesy such returns.

Put your faith in the two inches of humusthat will build under the trees

every thousand years.Listen to carrion – put your ear

close, and hear the faint chatteringof the songs that are to come.

Expect the end of the world. Laugh. Laughter is immeasurable. Be joyful

though you have considered all the facts.Go with your love to the fields.

Lie down in the shade. Rest your headin her lap. Swear allegiance

to what is nighest your thoughts.

As soon as the generals and the politicoscan predict the motions of your mind,

lose it. Leave it as a signto mark the false trail, the wayyou didn’t go. Be like the fox

who makes more tracks than necessary, some in the wrong direction.

Practice resurrection. -Wendell Berry, Manifesto: The Mad Farmer Liberation Front
