“OVERCOMING ADVERSITIES” SERIES
STRATEGIES FOR FINISHING WELL – PASTOR ALTON TRIMBLE SUNDAY, JUNE 23, 2019
PHILIPPIANS 4:11-13 (NKJV)
Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: 12 I
know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned
both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. 13 I can do all things through
Christ who strengthens me.
1. WHAT I’M SPEAKING IS EVIDENCE OF WHAT I’M PERCEIVING.
Verse 11a – “not that I speak in regard to need…”
EXODUS 14:1-3 (NKJV)
Now the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 2 “Speak to the children of Israel, that they turn and
camp before Pi Hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, opposite Baal Zephon; you shall
camp before it by the sea. 3 For Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel, ‘They are
bewildered by the land; the wilderness has closed them in.’
EXODUS 14:4 (NKJV)
Then I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, so that he will pursue them; and I will gain honor over
Pharaoh and over all his army, that the Egyptians may know that I am the LORD.” And they
did so.
The enemy shoots his best shot just before your deliverance.
EXODUS 14:5-9 (NKJV)
Now it was told the king of Egypt that the people had fled, and the heart of Pharaoh and
his servants was turned against the people; and they said, “Why have we done this, that
we have let Israel go from serving us?” 6 So he made ready his chariot and took his people
with him. 7 Also, he took six hundred choice chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt with
captains over every one of them. 8 And the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of
Egypt, and he pursued the children of Israel; and the children of Israel went out with
boldness. 9 So the Egyptians pursued them, all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, his
horsemen and his army, and overtook them camping by the sea beside Pi Hahiroth, before
Baal Zephon.
When threatened we can be tempted to reset to our Egypt.
EXODUS 14:10-12 (NKJV)
And when Pharaoh drew near, the children of Israel lifted their eyes, and behold, the
Egyptians marched after them. So they were very afraid, and the children of Israel cried out
to the LORD. 11 Then they said to Moses, “Because there were no graves in Egypt, have you

taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you so dealt with us, to bring us up out
of Egypt? 12 Is this not the word that we told you in Egypt, saying, ‘Let us alone that we may
serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than that
we should die in the wilderness.”
God sets the end at the end at the beginning so the fact of our victory never changes.
EXODUS 14:4 (NKJV)
Then I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, so that he will pursue them; and I will gain honor over
Pharaoh and over all his army, that the Egyptians may know that I am the LORD.” And they
did so.
EXODUS 14:13-15 (NKJV)
And Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the
LORD, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you
shall see again no more forever. 14 The LORD will fight for you, and you shall hold your
peace.” 15 And the LORD said to Moses, “Why do you cry to Me? Tell the children of Israel to
go forward.”
So what are the enemies of proper perception?
a. FEAR
EXODUS 14:13b – “…do not be afraid.”
ISAIAH 41:10 (NKJV)
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen
you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.
II TIMOTHY 1:7 (NCV)
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a self-
control.
Know that fear is never a part of God’s strategies for your victory.
b. TAKING CONTROL.
“Stand still” - EXODUS 14:13c
2. WHAT I’M LEARNING PREPARES ME FOR WHAT I’LL BE FACING.
PHILIPPIANS 4:11b – “for I have learn in whatever state I am…”
a. God uses everything to teach us something.

GENESIS 30:27 (NKJV)
And Laban said to him, “Please stay, if I have found favor in your eyes, for I have
learned by experience that the LORD has blessed me for your sake.”
JOB 12:12 (NKJV)
Wisdom is with aged men, and with length of days, understanding.
JOHN 9:25 (NKJV)
He answered and said, “Whether He is a sinner or not I do not know. One thing I
know: that though I was blind, now I see.”
b. We never graduate from the University of Life.
PSALM 119:71 (NKJV)
It is good for me that I have been afflicted, that I may learn Your statutes.
ISAIAH 1:16-17 (NKJV)
“Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; put away the evil of your doings from
before My eyes. cease to do evil, 17 Learn to do good; seek justice, rebuke the
oppressor; Defend the fatherless, plead for the widow.
MATTHEW 11:29 (NKJV)
Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart,
and you will find rest for your souls.
JOHN 6:45-46 (NKJV)
It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Therefore
everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me. 46 Not that
anyone has seen the Father, except He who is from God; He has seen the Father.
EPHESIANS 4:20-24 (NKJV)
PHILIPPIANS 4:11 (NKJV)
Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to
be content:
3. WHAT I AM BEING EVIDENCES MY OUTCOME.
I TIMOTHY 6:6 (NKJV)
Now godliness with contentment is great gain.
II KINGS 4:13 (NLT)
Elisha said to Gehazi, “Tell her, ‘We appreciate the kind concern you have shown us. What
can we do for you? Can we put in a good word for you to the king or to the commander of
the army?’” “No,” she replied, “my family takes good care of me.”

II KINGS 4:8-36 (NKJV)
PROVERBS 15:16 (NKJV)
Better is a little with the fear of the LORD, than great treasure with trouble.
LUKE 3:14 (NKJV)
Likewise the soldiers asked him, saying, “And what shall we do?” So he said to them, “Do
not intimidate anyone or accuse falsely, and be content with your wages.”
HEBREWS 13:5 (NKJV)
Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He
Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
When we are discontent:
i. We find ourselves fighting against God.
PROVERBS 19:3 (NKJV)
The foolishness of a man twists his way, and his heart frets against the LORD.
ii. Discontent causes murmuring.
JOHN 6:43 (NKJV)
Jesus therefore answered and said to them, “Do not murmur among
yourselves.”
iii. We find ourselves displeasing God.
I CORINTHIANS 10:10 (NKJV)
…nor complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed by the
destroyer.
iv. Follow God’s instruction.
PHILIPPIANS 2:14 (NKJV)
Do all things without complaining and disputing…
v. Discontent leads to a dead end.
LUKE 15:14 (NKJV) But when he had spent all, there arose a severe famine in that land, and he
began to be in want.
