COMPOSER’S NOTESHere are four volumes containing music highlights from Series 9 - Peter Capaldi’s penultimate series as The Doctor.

The brilliant Alastair King stepped onto the conductor’s rostrum for Series 9 taking over from Ben Foster but otherwise the team remained the same - the majestic National Orchestra of Wales, Jack Sugden, Dave Foster, Jake Jackson and Gerry O’Riordan.

THE MAGICIAN’S APPRENTICE / THE WITCH’S FAMILIARIn the season’s big, powerful, emotional opener ‘The Magician’s Apprentice’, The Doctor is pitted against one of his most terrifying and haunting adversaries - Davros. Directed by Hettie MacDonald, the theatrical visual style and compelling performances, especially from a brilliantly demonic Julian Bleach, ensured a memorably dark story.

UNDER THE LAKE / BEFORE THE FLOODUnderwater bases - never liked them. Every time I drive under the Hudson River on the way to the airport I think about how much I would hate to live permanently in an underwater base. Especially one you have to share with ghosts that want to kill you. Toby Whithouse’s enthralling episode directed by Daniel O’Hara married a base under siege

set-up with a time-jumping prequel finale in an innovative use of the two episode story format.

THE GIRL WHO DIED / THE WOMAN WHO LIVEDThe Girl Who Died introduced the brilliant Maisie Williams into the world of Doctor Who in a whirling, riotous Viking/Highwayman adventure that concluded with The Woman Who Lived. I am married to someone descended from Vikings so this felt like a family story.

THE ZYGON INVASION / THE ZYGON INVERSIONZygons were one of the monsters that terrified me when I watched Doctor Who as a child. I didn’t like how they talked, how they looked or how they behaved. Plus the Loch Ness Monster had something to do with them and they always seemed to be spying on people. In more recent times, the Zygons, like the Sontarans, have been used for laughs as much as scares but Peter Harness’s double episode was full of political allegory and reminded us that the Zygons are essentially a malevolent life-form. And anything that brings UNIT back is good with me.

SLEEP NO MORENikki Wilson, producer of Sleep No More, called ahead and said they wanted to explore ‘found footage’ styles with this episode and

wanted to work with very minimal score. Most of the ‘music’ for the episode comes from a Moog and a Prophet 6. These might be the tracks you skip on your playback device. Others might see this as the type of music that should have accompanied every episode of the last twelve years of Doctor Who.

FACE THE RAVENAnd then it got emotional, as the series headed to its ground breaking finale and the well-publicised exit of Clara. In perhaps the strongest final three episodes of a series for some time, Sarah Dollard’s Face the Raven presented the intriguingly brilliant idea of a city hidden within a city. And in that city, Clara was lost.

HEAVEN SENT / HELL BENTHeaven Sent was my favourite episode to score since The Pandorica Opens. It was a theatrical and imaginative tour de force in which The Doctor is something between Sisyphus and Theseus, alien but somehow representing all humankind in its perpetual mission to cheat death. But cheat it he does, in a feat of stoic determination leading to the blazing Hell Bent finale. The whole thing was brilliantly directed by Rachel Talalay and the entire Doctor Who team did their best to rise to this slice of Moffat genius.

THE HUSBANDS OF RIVER SONGAfter the trauma and redemption of the Heaven Sent / Hell Bent two parter, it was comforting to find romance and comedy in Steven Moffat’s Christmas episode The Husbands of River Song. Cleverly directed by Douglas Mackinnon, Halia Meguid, long time performer on Doctor Who, sang for The Singing Tower of Darillium.
