Martin Luther King Day, a federal holiday in the United States, com-memorates the birthday of the noted civil rights leader and nonviolent activist. Celebrated the third Monday in January, it usually falls within a few days of his actual birth date of January 15. His “I Have a Dream” speech is considered by many to be one of the most important speeches of the twentieth century, ranking with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s “Blood, Sweat and Tears” speech and President Roosevelt’s “Nothing to Fear but Fear Itself” speech. The difficult—but ultimately successful—struggle Dr. King led against racial segregation and discrimination in the late 1950s and 1960s changed our country forever.

Discussion Starters

Do you remember hearing King’s speeches on television or radio? Which speech do you remember most?

Do you remember where you were when you heard that Dr. King had been assassinated? Do you recall what you thought in that moment?

Over six million signatures had been collected to petition Congress to pass the MLK Day bill. It was considered by many to be the largest petition in favor of a single issue in the history of the United States. But there was still strong oppo-sition in Congress. Two Republican senators from North Carolina, Jesse Helms and John Porter East, challenged the bill and maintained that King was not im-portant enough to be honored with a federal holiday. They criticized King as well for his stance against the Vietnam War, and Helms accused him of trying to further “action-oriented Marxism.” Helms organized and led a filibuster against the MLK Day bill and offered the Senate a 300- page document alleging King’s communist ties.

Nevertheless, a bill introduced to the House of Representatives passed with a vote of 338 for and 90 against, while the Senate bill passed with 78 in favor and 22 against. President Ronald Reagan was originally opposed on the grounds that it would cost too much, but on November 2, 1983—less than a month after Helms’ filibuster—the president signed the bill establishing a fed-eral holiday to honor Martin Luther King Jr.

MLK Day is now universally observed throughout the United States. Many Foreign Coun-tries Honor MLK It may seem odd to those of us who view Dr. King’s struggle against segregation and discrimination as a uniquely American approach to a completely American problem, but many countries outside the United States identify with King’s nonviolent methods and dedication to the dignity of all people. Tadatoshi Akiba, mayor of the city of Hiroshima, Japan, established the ob-servance of MLK. Toronto, Ontario, in Canada has also officially recognized Martin Luther King Day. In 1984, just a year after President Reagan created an official holiday honoring Dr. King, the first Israeli commemoration of MLK Day was conducted by a Navy chaplain visiting Israel with the U.S. MLK Day of Service The Martin Luther King Day of Service challenges Americans to live up to Dr. King’s highest ideals by turning the day set aside to honor him into a national service day.

1. Was Martin the name MLK was given at birth? No, his given name was Michael, as was his fa-ther’s. King’s father changed his own name to Martin in 1931, when he became pastor of the Ebene-zer Baptist Church, and he changed his son’s name when Martin was six years old.

2. How old was MLK when he entered Morehouse College in Atlanta? Fifteen years old. King skipped ninth grade and twelfth grade in high school.

3. Where was Martin Luther King Jr. born? Atlanta, Georgia.

4. From what institution did he receive his doctorate? He earned his doctorate in systematic theol-ogy from Boston University.

5. Worldwide, how many streets are named for Martin Luther King Jr.? Over 900.

6. How many books did Dr. King publish in his lifetime? Five.

7. How old was King when he received the Nobel Peace Prize? He was 35 years old.

8. When was MLK first introduced to the philosophies of Mohandas Gandhi? He first heard about

Gandhi while a student at Crozer Theological Seminary in 1948.

9. Is it true that the “dream” parts of what we now call King’s “I Have a Dream” speech were not included in the original draft? Yes, King added them at the behest of Mahalia Jackson, who had heard him make similar references in a speech he had given in Detroit.

10. How long is King’s “I Have a Dream” speech? According the King Center, it’s 17 minutes long.

11. How many times was Martin Luther King Jr. arrested during his civil rights struggles? Nearly 30 times.

12. What important distinction does MLK share with George Washington? They are the only two Americans to have national holidays commemorating their birthdays.

13. What honor did King receive in 1963? He became the first African American to be named Time Magazine’s Man of the Year.

14. Did MLK ever win a Grammy? Yes, he was awarded a posthumous Grammy in 1971 for Best Spoken Word Album for “Why I Oppose the War in Vietnam.”

15. MLK led the black community in Montgomery, Alabama, in the first nonviolent civil rights dem-onstration in the United States. What was it? The bus boycott in 1955 that lasted more than a year.

The clear winner was

Sidney’s MONKEY TREE!

Each year, owner and administrator, Elaine, decorates the halls of Serenity

to its fullets! A holiday tree goes outside of all apartments as well as more

in the public spaces. This year, we held a competition, using pennies to

tally as one vote to decide which was everyone’s favorite tree between

both buildings. We brought in almost $100 of loose change that will go to-

wards our SALS GALS auxiliary fund; more information on this auxiliary

fund can be found on the next page of this newsletter. To view all holiday

trees and decorations around Serenity this year, please stop by ASAP be-

fore they get taken down...or see our slideshow on our Facebook page.

Sals Gals Serenity’s Auxiliary Fund!

SALS GALS is an acronym that stands for ‘Serenity Assisted Living’s Gals’ which is our auxiliary fund. The auxiliary fund is utilized to pay for musical entertainment at Serenity, go towards various fundraising efforts for equipment for our clients, and other items brought up by our clients at our monthly Resident Council Meetings!

We collect donations in various forms. There are piggy banks on our dining room tables...we call them our Treasured Tips. Feel free to drop a small amount if you are joining your loved one for coffee or anytime.

Many times, memorial gifts following a funeral are donated to Serenity and designated for a specific project or item. An example of a few of these are the handicap door openers, pergola, and outdoor chairs at the East Campus. Other times, donations are just made because it’s a good cause!

We have exciting news! We have officially gotten two iPads for our Life Enrichment activities and will start being able to use

them immediately! Along with money in our SALS GALS account, we are now accepting iTunes gift cards to use for

App purchases.
