    Chemical Structure..

    Methyl Bromide, Meth-O-Gas, CH3Br (further MeBr) is a broad spectrum pesticide used in the control of pest insects, nematodes, weeds, pathogens and rodents.

    The chemical name for MeBr is bromomethane and its classified as a alkyl bromide.

    One of its main uses is for soil fumigation of seedbeds of tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, tobacco, strawberries, ornamentals and other crops. It is estimated that more than 80% of the global consumption of MeBr is for soil fumigation.

    Montreal Protocol and MeBr

    In 1992, the Parties to the Montreal Protocol considered the science on MeBr and listed it as an ozone depleting substance (ODS), in Annex E/Group I, with an Ozone Depleting Potential (ODP) of 0,6.

    At the 1997 Ninth Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol (Montreal, Canada) global controls (reduction in consumption) for the MeBr were accelerated for developed (industrialized) countries:

    25% in 1999, 50% in 2001, 70% in 2003, 100% in 2005 (based on 1991 consumption levels which

    were frozen in 1995), Pre-shipment and quarantine uses exemption, Critical agricultural uses allocated after 2005, Emergency uses exemption.

    For developing (non-industrialized) countries: 20% in 2005 100% in 2015 (based on an average of 1995-1998

    consumption levels which were frozen in 2002).

    Meeting conclusion were: For the period from 1995-2006 imported MeBr was used

    in Tobacco Industry (71,85%) and for 28,15% final users are not available, but predictions points on Pre-shipment

    All final users agreed to cooperate and take part in possible demonstration or non-investing project

    Collected data still in verification process There is no registered use of MeBr in strawberry

    production

    city Subotica, 180 km north from Belgrade, is located private strawberry farming plant MILETIC D.O.O;

    In February 2006, there was a constitution of Union of strawberry producers Subotika jagoda (Strawberry from Subotica) with support of Ministry of Agriculture;

    Members are 19 producers from north part of Serbia including Subotica;

    200 participants including official government representatives from Ministry of Agriculture. Subotica

    They use advanced strawberry production as an effective integrated and alternative approach "vertical bag" production;

    After 2 years of good expirience with strawberry farming with vertical bag, they invented special farming polystiren flowerpot which additionally promote this vertical beg technology like more exiting, simpler and less expensive;

    Future system for commercial production and for hobby.

  • Directorate for the Environmental ProtectionSERBIAS EXPERIENCE IN PRODUCING STRAWBERRIES WITHOUT USE OF MeBr

    They formed new nursery on vertical bag in 2 greenhouse (each 375 m);

    In each column are 9 nursery flowerpots with 4 plants, with minimal distance of 1.1 m between rows and 0.8 m between the two rows in the same line;

    In beginning they have 7000 seedlings and with this new approach there is now 14000 on the same area of 0,35 ha;

    They started with 0,2 ha and now they exceed to 4 ha; Mulch folio, T-Tape hydro system, use of waterproof

    fertilizers..

    Advantages of vertical beg technology:

    Protection of ozone layer, Saving of place for 5 to 10 times, Saving of water, fertilizers and pesticides for 50-80%, Better quality and health safety plant standards, Plant and pluck easier to conduct, Saving of time and working power, Farming process is cleaner, simpler and persistent, Installation possible without any experience.

    Beside strawberries with this technology successfully can be grow and cultures like: lettuce, spinach, flowers, herbs..
