The conversation went something like this: Lila: Mommy, I feel lucky. Me: Why? Lila: Because I have a mezuzah on my room. Me: Ah, yes, you do! Do you know why we put a mezuzah on your door? Lila: Yes Momma, it’s so that God will protect me. Me:That’s beautiful, Lila. Do you know what’s inside the mezuzah? Lila: No. Me: Inside there is a special piece of paper and written on that paper in teeny-tiny writing is the Shema. The same Shema I sing to you each night while you are going to sleep. silence Lila: Will God still protect me if I don’t sing the Shema?
Lila, likemostyoungchildren, asks thequestionsweall thinkaboutbut never ask. THE LADY IN GOLD The Extraordinary Tale of Gustav Klimt's Masterpiece, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer
By Anne-Marie O’Conner THURSDAY OCTOBER 1st at 10 a.m.
At Temple Beth David, with lunch both in and outside of our Sukkah. All Welcome!
“The Lady in Gold, considered an unforgettable masterpiece, … bought for $135 million a century after Klimt, the most fa-mous Austrian painter of his time, completed the society por-trait. … of the Lady in Gold, Adele Bloch-Bauer, a dazzling Viennese Jewish society figure; …considered a rebel of fin de siècle Vienna (she wanted to be educated, a notion considered "degenerate” in a society that believed women being out in the world went against their feminine "nature"). … Nazis confis-cating the portrait of Adele from the Bloch-Bauers' grand pal-ais; the Austrian government putting the painting on display, stripping Adele's Jewish surname from it so that no clues to her identity (nor hint of her Jewish origins) would be revealed. …[S]ixty years after it was stolen by the Nazis, the Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer became the subject of a decade-long litiga-tion between the Austrian government and the Bloch-Bauer heirs, … the U.S. Supreme Court became involved in the case, and the Court's decision had profound ramifications in the art world.”
