THANK YOU...Every day we have wonderful people stepping up to help further OSA's mission. Thank you to each and all who volunteer.

    • An enormous thank you to the law firm of Schwabe, Williamson and Wyatt, Bob Joseph and Terry Hauck, for their pro bono contribution to OSA: They accomplished all the legal work for our transaction with our lender for the funds necessary for our executive director position.

    • We wish to thank Mary Beth and Roger Burpee and their family for their generosity and kindness to Oregon Society of Artists.

    • To our volunteer gardeners—the garden looks lovely, and we all appreciate your efforts!

    • Thank you to our plein air painters who donated their time and talent for our July development event, and to all the volunteers who helped make the event a success!

    • ART SUPPLIES, RESTAURANT GIFT CARDS, and AMAZON CARDS, OH MY! The Gallery Event Committee is looking for prize donations for our upcoming 200 for Under $200 Art Show. Please consider donating new, unused art materials, and gift cards from restaurants, Amazon.com, and local merchants. These items will be carefully curated for awards, and for the raffle drawing that takes place during the opening reception. Be creative! Collaborate on a set of items, or a basket of items...OSA Classes and Instructors are encouraged to contribute as a group. Please note that only new, unused items can be accepted. Email: [email protected] or drop your donation off during office hours.

    • IN NEED OF NEW EQUIPMENT! Adding new mediums to our class mix sometimes means adding new equipment, too. We are in need of adjustable sculpture stands for our new Portrait Sculpture class. If you would like to contribute monetarily toward the purchase of stands, or have a used stand you'd like to donate, please contact Programs and Education Manager, Emily Fox. Email: [email protected] or call 503-228-0706.

    • HOSPITALITY SUPPLIES: Donations of wine for receptions and coffee/tea for the kitchen are always welcome!

    COMMITTEE REPORTS

OSA membership is growing. We currently have 558 members. Check out the membership information on the OSA website to learn about the two new levels of membership: Art Supporter and Art Patron.

Thanks to a generous donation from member Catherine Rudolf, OSA will soon offer need-based scholarships to help with class tuition or membership fees. We are in the planning process now. More information regarding eligibility and how to apply for the scholarships will soon be available.

    MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE UPDATE

Have you visited the Workshop section of our OSA website lately? If you have, perhaps you’ve already registered for a 2020 workshop. Your workshop committee has been productive contacting award-winning artists from near and far to fill our 2020 roster. Using a set of criteria, we selected respected instructors to meet the varied needs and wishes of our membership and extended art community. We are currently working on the 2021 roster, so please contact Emily Fox in the office if you would like to suggest an instructor. Workshop committee members: Tedd Chilless, Cathy Cramer, Emily Fox, Sharon Hansen, Susan Kuznitsky, and Carol Stepick.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGEAs a child, September meant the unstructured lazy days of summer would give way to the structure of the new school year. The same is true for OSA as Fall classes have the building buzzing with activity. I encourage you to go online to review our new class offerings and 2020 workshops.

While summer days may be lazy, OSA stayed busy with classes and workshops while attending to needed projects. We now have fresh interior paint downstairs and in the Gallery, and a new HVAC system.

In late July, thirteen OSA plein air painters lent their talent and time for a development event in my garden. At least 140 people new to OSA's mission enjoyed learning more about OSA. They purchased paintings, listened to live music and enjoyed a drink. It was a treat to see so many people gathered to support OSA.

In August I received a concerning call from a longtime member who had heard membership was down and we were “going

under.” Nothing could be further from the truth! In fact, membership is up more than 30% since this time last year, and we now have non-artist members who want to support the work of OSA. Donations are coming in, and we are working on several grant applications with positive feedback. OSA isn’t going anywhere. We are here to stay, and continue to work responsibly toward growth and sustainability.

As we say goodbye to summer at OSA, I will treasure the memory of walking into the gallery and watching Randall Vemer teach a group of very interested teenagers in his class "Michelangelo Meets Marvel: Classical Drawing Applied to Action Figures." Another generation, beginning to understand and appreciate the magic that art brings to our life.

Something truly wonderful happens when people work together, and that is the case every day at OSA...We hope you will support OSA by visiting often, being engaged, and volunteering. Above all, help us spread the word about OSA and all it can offer!

    Judy Matarazzo, OSA President

Thayne J. Logan was born in Joplin, Missouri in 1900 and moved to Portland as a young boy. He studied architectural drafting at Benson Polytechnic School. After graduation, Logan was employed as a draftsman in various architectural firms.

During World War I, Logan met future business partner Robert Barrett while working in the shipyards of the Northwest Steel Company.

In addition to being an architect, Logan was a painter and an art critic, and studied art under Clyde Leon Keller and Sidney Bell. Both Logan and his wife, Helen, were active members of the Oregon Society of Artists. Helen was the first editor-in-chief, printer, mailing clerk, and distributor of BrushMarks. During his many years as a member, Thayne Logan served as President four times.

OSA history indicates that as president Logan "unified the society" (1934), and championed "good educational programs" (1939). He stepped up again in 1941 during difficult times as World War 2 started. Logan served his final term in 1967, "opening meetings with a salute and oath of allegiance to our flag."

In the 1950's when the decision was made to build a home for OSA, Thayne Logan and contractor Lyle Keeler donated their services and the use of their equipment and organizations to effort. The contractor constructed the concrete walls and roof of the first 40' x 50' unit (now used as our gallery).

According to our history, "Nearly everybody participated, some giving labor, time, pictures to sell, and some donated money but not to exceed $100. Building material firms donated much of

    BRUSHSTROKES IN TIME: OSA HISTORY

Thayne Johnstone Logan (1900-1962) the material, and the building was built, in part, by donated membership labor. It was a "Do it Ourselves" project, and no public funds, donations, foundations or subscriptions were asked for, nor were they offered."

Thayne Logan left a rich legacy through his professional and artistic works. He died in 1991 and is buried at Riverview Cemetery in SW Portland.

"WW2 started, many members called into service. Just holding the society together was a problem."
