    PREPARATIONFORWORSHIP

Then the Lord said to Moses, I am going to rain bread from heaven for you, andeach day the people shall go out and gather enough for that day. In that way I will test

them, whether they will follow my instruction or not.

    -Exodus 16:4

[Jesus said] And when they received it, they grumbled against the landowner, saying,These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who haveborne the burden of the day and the scorching heat. But he replied to one of them,Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage?

Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same as I give toyou. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you en-vious because I am generous? So the last will be first, and the first will be last.

    - Matthew 20:11-16

The literal truth is that when God forgives us he doesnt change his mind about us.Out of his unconditional, unchanging, eternal love for us he changes our minds abouthim. It is Gods loving gift that we begin to think of repenting for our sin and asking

for his mercy. And that repentance does not earn his forgiveness. It is his forgivenessunder another name... [When we confess our sins] it is not to plead for forgivenessfrom God. It is to thank him for it. The gift of contrition is the gift of recognizingGods unswerving love for us. It is the gift of having the confidence to confess oursins, to admit the truth. And if we do that, then, as Jesus told us, the truth will set usfree (cf. John 8:32).

    PRAYEROF CONFESSION

Almighty and heavenly Father,You are a God of justice and of peace,a God of mercy and of righteousness,

And you call us to a life of holiness, even as you are holy.Yet we confess that we have not heeded Your call.We have chosen self-interest over obedience,

preferred comfort over discipleship, followed culture rather than Your Word, and refused to believe in Your promise of new life.

Lord, we are sorry; have mercy upon us, and forgive us our sins.

We hunger for Your living bread;Help us turn aside from cultures false offerings.

We yearn for the freedom of life lived in You;Deliver us from the appetites of our fallen selves.

We suffer for those in need and in pain;Send us out in Your Spirit to love them and serve them.

Let us daily empty ourselves to be filled by You,trusting that Your grace is sufficient for our every need,

and following Your Son, who emptied Himself, giving His life as a ransom for others

for it is in His holy, precious, and humble name that we pray. Amen.

Today we welcome back violinist Alana Carithers. During the second half of the 19th cetury, Josef Rheinberger was a major musical figure in Europe. Born in LichtenstRheinbergers sacred music gained wide acceptance at churches in southern Germany a

Switzerland. His collection of six pieces for organ and violin are his only works for the twinstruments. With its melodically inspired feelings of melancholy and longing, Elegiehbeen described as the most beautiful movement of the set.

In her lifetime Amy Beach was celebrated as the most prominent woman composer in tUnited States. She was a concert pianist and a prodigious composer who did much to futher the careers of several young musicians in the Boston area. Invocationis her only wofor organ and violin and has been edited by Richmond musicians Robert Murray (violini

and Ardyth Lohuis (organ), both retired professors of music from VCU.

Allan Bullards music is widely performed in Great Britain and several countries. ChristiaShout for Joy and Gladness is one of Bullards most performed choral works. The anthemmelody and bass line were composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Bullard arranged the choparts on the second stanza and the soprano descant on the final stanza.

Denis Bdard is one of Canadas leading composers of organ and choral music. Much Bedards music is composed in the French neo-classical style. Trois Postludeshad their deb

at the International Organ Festival in Toronto in 2009. Todays postludea jovial trumpvoluntaryis the second of the three postludes in the collection.

If you are interested in donating flowers for the sanctuary for Sundaymornings, please contact Lisa Gray at 673-0587. We have three Sundaavailable at this time: October 2, October 9, and October 23.

These are everyday items that FooStamp dollars will not cover and may be very costly to a low-income family. We have partnered with this ministry by giving non-perishable food items.
