Rogation Sunday: May 6th, 2018

The word “rogation” is from the Latin rogare, “to ask.” Rogation Sunday is the day when the Church has traditionally offered prayer for God’s blessings on the fruits of the earth and the labors of those who produce our food.

Rogation Sunday was a church tradition from the old country, where a good percentage of our ancestors were farmers. This tradition came to America with them. Historically, the Rogation Days (the three days before Ascension Day) were a period of fasting and abstinence, beseeching God’s blessing on the crops for a bountiful harvest.  However, in our more industrialized society, the tradition of observing a Rogation Sunday and the Rogation days have mostly fallen away.

We here in Mundy’s Corner are surrounded by farms and fields. Many of us today directly derive our livelihood from the production of food. Or we might plant a garden and raise our own vegetables to supplement our food supply. Observing a Rogation Sunday is good; it reminds us all of God’s provident care in supplying food to our table. It also reminds us of our responsibility for the environment around us.

There were two traditions associated with Rogation Sunday. First, to begin worship, the pastor, dressed in purple, would lead the congregation around the perimeter of the church property. The cross would be lifted up in procession, and the congregation would stop and pray for all who worship in that place for the year.

The second tradition was to invite the pastor to your farm, to bless the fields. Please do invite me—I would welcome the chance to walk the fields with you and bless your farm!

Weather permitting; we will observe Rogation Sunday and worship outdoors in the prayer garden on Sunday May 6th at 9 a.m. In this worship service, we will bless the soil, the seeds, the air, and the rainfall/water.

We will pray for a good harvest; that God blesses us this year with abundance. We will pray for our environment—that it be healthy. We will pray for farmers and their families. We will pray for those who raise their own food.

I am looking forward to worshipping outdoors with you on May 6 th, Rogation Sunday at St. Paul’s!

One other note of great joy and incredible importance this month:

Kailee Ribblett will be confirmed on Sunday May 20th! Congratulations, Kailee!

Vacation Bible School needs YOU!!

Plans are well under way for this year’s Vacation Bible School. We have a wonderful program this year filled with interesting Bible stories, lots of

fun games to play, great arts and crafts projects, exciting songs to sing, and of course lots and lots of cookies!

Now, the most important part of preparing for Vacation Bible School is recruiting a staff. I’d like ALL the members of St. Paul’s to prayerfully

consider volunteering to help at VBS and encouraging others to volunteer too. We need people of all ages, both men and women, to help share God’s Word with the children at VBS.

There are two important goals of Bible School: education and witness. Bible school gives our St. Paul’s kids 12 ½ hours of time spent learning more about their faith. And they learn this in a very relaxed atmosphere. They get to play outside, do crafts inside and sing songs that reinforce the Bible lessons they’re learning.

The second goal – witnessing - is really important, especially in today’s world. Children from all around the area attend our Vacation Bible School. Some of them may not attend church on a regular basis. Often it’s easier to witness to children than adults. They can be so open to hearing about God and his role in their lives. You never know what you may say that will help them as they grow up. VBS also gives our kids a chance to witness when they invite their friends to come with them.

Now, speaking of kids, if you’ve ever been around 1, 2 or 3 kids, you know how overwhelming it can be. But think about working with 30, 40 or more kids during Vacation Bible School. The more helpers we have, the easier it will be for all of us.

Our goal is to have 25 to 30 volunteers for the week of Vacation Bible School. Remember, we can have the most fabulous crafts planned, the most interesting Bible lessons prepared, the most amazing games organized, the most fantastic songs ready to sing, and the most delicious snacks bought, BUT, if we don’t have enough volunteers who are willing to share the Word of God with the children who come through our doors…Vacation Bible School won’t be able to happen!!

So, whether you always volunteer at Vacation Bible School, whether it’s been a while since you’ve volunteered, or even if you have never, ever helped at Vacation Bible School, there is a place for you. We promise that It will be a worthwhile experience.

There is a list on the hall bulletin board explaining the various roles we need to fill. There is also a signup sheet, so that you can add your name to our list of volunteers.
