WOLFE AND QUEBEC AND GRAY 641

Indeed Scott, who had often heard the story from Professor Robison, then one of Wolfe's men, wrote to Southey: Cc I have repeatedly heard the Professor say that during part of the passage Wolfe pulled out of his pocket and read, or repeated, Gray's Elegy." Thus thoughtful was this young man's determined valour.

That was the night before the takinig, followed by the silence of the rest of their passage, and their but once challenged landing, and then their battle array on Quebec's west front, deemed inaccessible by its doonmed defenders.

But The boast of heraldry, the pomp of power,

And all that beauity, all that wealth e'er gave, Awaits alike the inevitable hou.r.

The paths of glory lead buit to the grave. W. F. P. STOcLET.

SEPTEMBER. THE MIRACLE MONTH.

Tr-anslation of a poem by Pierre Mille.

September is gentle, September is tender and fair, Like a wistful song of love in a hecart grown old, Ere the strength of the sun has ebbed from the sky, behold! The langourous pale moon is lovely there.

What Lord cometh down through the strange, radiant air To the earth that awaits and adores? In the starry fold

What chord of delight has throbbed in a harrp of gold That hope comes back to men who dreamt o:f despair?

And whence these perfumes sweet with lingering sadness, Wafted from gardens that the moon has kissed? Speak! 0 spirits that wander where ye list, Pure keepers of the relies of our gladness. Ye robe our sorrows in a golden mist Miraculous! and on your wing's light sleep Tear-heavy thoughts whose weight I once did weep.

E. M. J. O'Bomlz.
