Did you know that bats are the only mammals that can truly fly? And that half of the bat species in BC are listed as vulnerable or threatened? Join biologist Juliet Craig, from the Kootenay Community Bat Project, to learn more about bats on Wednesday, September 11 at 8.00 pm at the Golden Municipal Campground. This free event, hosted by Wildsight Golden, will include an outdoor presentation followed by a walk to

eavesdrop on bat echolocation calls using bat detectors.

Funded by the Columbia Basin Trust, the successful Kootenay Community Bat Project (KCBP) was initiated in 2004 to raise awareness about bat conservation and to assist landowners with bat issues in their buildings.

“This community-based project is driven by the support and

enthusiasm of local residents,” says Juliet Craig, Coordinating Biologist for the project. “We have visited hundreds of properties to identify bats, learn about bat habitat, and assist landowners struggling with bat issues.”

“Some people don’t mind having bats in their buildings while others are looking for methods to remove them,” explains Craig. “We provide people with information and ideas for addressing their issues, whether that means leaving the bats where they are, or removing them from the roost site with as little impact as possible.”

One of the focuses is on the BC Bat Count where residents are

encouraged to count bats that leave a roost site on their property for over four nights this year.

“We are looking for participants for the BC Bat Count next year,” adds Craig. “This information is very valuable since there is very little known about local bat species and their population numbers. Also, many of the colonies in buildings are the little brown myotis which have been assessed as an endangered species in Canada.”

If you have bats living in your buildings, would like to join the BC Bat Count, or need information on how to build a bat-house, visit the Kootenay Community Bat Project website at www.kootenaybats.com

I had the chance to sit down with David Higgenson, of Hig & Son Automotive Repair and find out more about what makes his business such a family affair.

KK When did you move to Golden and what makes you stay?

DH I was born and raised in Golden, and I stayed because I like living in a small town, being close to my family and I love to play in these mountains.

KK What was the catalyst for you to start you own business?

DH I have always wanted to work for myself. I have a great shop space and have been buying tools for years so I figured it was time to cut out the middle man. I also thought that Golden needed a new independent repair shop.

KK What makes it important to you to own a family business?

DH Owning a family business is important to me because I get to see

Juniper and Davey a lot more. We always dreamed of having our own business and we work great together. Juniper does the office work and I do the fixing. I really like the idea of having our son grow up watching his parents work as a team.

KK What are the products and specialities that you provide?

DH I work on all makes and models, from old to new. I can fix anything. Brakes, suspension, front and rear end, drive train, engine diagnostics, clutches, exhausts, etc… We will be equipped for seasonal tire changes come fall, and we are in the process of becoming a licensed inspection facility.

KK What is the mantra of your business?

DH Honest Reliable service, and of course affordable repairs.

KK What have you learned since you started?

DH In the last two months I have

KRIS KING | SPONSORED BY GOLDEN AREA INIT IATIVES

learned that customers love to talk to me because I am the mechanic. They like seeing the broken parts and being explained why the repair is needed. I have also learned the people of Golden are super supportive and have made the launch of our new business a great experience.

KK Anything that is funny or intriguing?

DH Come check us out, my son Davey is pretty funny and you may find it intriguing that we have a coupon running until October 31st in The Local Townie for $20 off any service or repair over $150. Don’t worry about us being located out of town, we will give you a ride if needed.

KK How do you find that your business will fit into the mix of competitors in the region. What niche are you filling?

DH People like options, some like franchises and others like independent businesses but most of all people want a qualified, experienced mechanic working on their vehicle hoping to save a few bucks along the way. I have 20 years of experience and because I work from home we can offer savings, so I find that we are fitting into the mix of competitors just fine.

Next to household garbage, domestic fruit is the most common bear attractant in communities across the province. But it doesn’t have to be this way! We can prevent bears from becoming used to people and our food. This will keep both people and bears safe.

When I sat down to write this article, my heart was still bursting and the words would just not come out; it’s hard to describe something so wonderful. Anyways, after a coffee and a cookie, here goes.

Just before Christmas 2012, Tika was rescued from Golden and taken to Northern Lights Wildlife Shelter (NLWS) in Smithers where he began his long road to recovery leading up to his eventual release. Tika was severely weak but with the loving care of Angelika and Peter Langen, he started to make a slow and thankful recovery.

On July 6, 2013, Angelika and Peter started their two-day journey to bring Tika back home to Golden. Eventually, exhausted and worried about Tika’s well being, they arrived in town where I met them to take Tika to a private holding area for the evening. As you can imagine the little bear was not happy about being in the transport trap, but freedom would soon be his.

Monday morning started off with torrential rain. After contacting the local Conservation Officer, who would be escorting us to the release location, we picked up Tika and were on our way despite the continuing downpour. When we arrived, we set up the trap and opened the door, and to our surprise the rain had stopped.

There was no movement, nothing. Tika had moved himself to the front of the trap but instead of hurrying out and running off, he stepped out of the container and took some time to look around.

He wanted to check everything out, sniffing the air and taking in a couple of mouthfuls of fresh greens. His expression soon changed from one of wariness to complete bliss. He, all of a sudden, realized that he was free. Full of excitement, he started digging at rocks and rubbing himself on a tree, still sniffing and taking in his new environment. Then, he turned back towards us and smiled.

The emotions running through me as this little bear was realizing his freedom, are indescribable. The tears started; tears of joy and extreme happiness. As Angelika and I hugged, she said to me that, “you cannot explain to anyone what it is like to witness this first hand, you have to be here to feel it.” Tika continued to sniff around and then he started to wander off further; the last I saw of him was his beautiful furry butt as he headed off to start his new life.

After the long journey, Angelika went on to speak to a group of locals on behalf of NLWS; she is truly an inspiration to me. As NLWS relies on donations, please consider contributing today as every little bit helps.

Live long, healthy and happy Tika bear as you will always be in my heart.

Wendy Chambers is a bear enthusiast; she is a volunteer for NLWS and also the Secretary for the Bear Care Group. To find out more about Wendy, read her blog at:

LOCAL MONEY HABITS THAT COULD BE KILLING YOUR FINANCIAL LIFE

Many people think that money and budgets are nothing more than following spreadsheets and filling in the blanks. Oftentimes, this is said than done. The fact of the matter is that budgeting and spending money is less about spreadsheets and more about emotions than you think. In fact, depending on your own self-discipline, the real key to developing good financial habits is to develop good life habits. Here are some helpful hints:

1. DETERMINE YOUR BINGE AND FIND THE ALTERNATIVE

Everyone has money binges, the thing that you spend too much money on every month. Most of the time we think the solution to spending less money is to cut back. Although, I agree that cutting back can be good advice, a better course of action is to find an alternative to your binge. For example, if your vice is spending money going out to eat, you will need to combat that by having more food in your home and then perhaps, meeting your friends after for dessert. If you are spending

too much on clothes, you have to start visiting more frugal shops and only buying what you need. Every situation is different, but the real key is to not eliminate what you are spending money on, but find a way to replace it with something more cost-effective.

2. GET IT CHEAPER

Instead of saying no to things, spend the time looking to find something cheaper. Sometimes a lack of money requires us to be more creative in order to get what we need. It’s amazing the deals we can find if we spend the time doing the research.

3. LOOK AT YOUR SCHEDULE.

It is often that we spend the most money on things that we buy without even thinking about it. Perhaps, it’s the cost of going out of town, taking extra trips, or just going to the mall; all of these things add up. If you find there are some situations where you spend more money than you would like to, consider changing your schedule and activities to ensure you are not in a

position to be tempted to spend extra money.

Most often, when we think about creating a budget we think about sacrificing our lifestyle and giving up the things we enjoy. However, there are plenty of ways to cut the budget without having to devote your life to a nightly serving of Kraft dinner. Well, that is, unless you want to.

The Kicking Horse Country Chamber of Commerce (KHCCC) celebrates the Ninth Annual Community Excellence Awards on Saturday, October 19 at the Golden Civic Centre.

“The Community Excellence Award Committee is eager to release the modified selection process for the 2013 Community Excellence Awards,” says Ruth Hamilton, Manager of the KHCCC.

Submissions are on a self-nominating or organization-to-organization basis. We want you to tell us why your business, manager, employee or correlate business is worthy of an award in 250 words or less. All entries must be submitted by September 16, 2013 at 5:00pm. The top three nominations will be recognized for their desire to go above and beyond, and for their innovation to be the best of the best in business by a special selection committee.

The top three submissions in each category move ahead to public

nominations from September 18-30, 2013. You can vote online at www.goldenchamber.bc.ca or stop by the Golden Star office for a paper ballot. The winners will be presented with a plaque at the Community Excellence Awards on Saturday, October 19, 2013.

“Preparations for the Gala event are well under way!” says Brandy Beliveau, Chairperson for the Gala event. “We are thrilled to have Michele Rempel, Member of Parliament for Calgary Centre North and Minister for Western Economic Diversification, as our Keynote speaker at the Community Excellence Awards.”

Mark your calendars and come out to celebrate community excellence on Saturday, October 19. The gala event is always an extraordinary evening, enjoy a great dinner, and dance the night away.

The Bowle-Evans Award for Community Development was created to honour community volunteers in the mould and memory of Peter Bowle-Evans. Peter provided leadership and vision in the creation of the road up Mt. 7 and the development of the launch site, which has made Golden a global destination for downhill mountain biking and paragliding. He was tireless in fundraising and building community support for this project.

Founded in 2008, the Bowle-Evans Award, funded by Golden Area Initiatives, is presented at the Kicking Horse Country Chamber of Commerce Community Excellence Awards each year. Eligible nominees include not-for-profit organizations of Kicking Horse Country (Golden and the CSRD Area A) through the implementation of innovative ideas and approaches to community challenges and opportunities.

This award is intended to honour social innovators who are developing new ideas that benefit our community.

Previous recipients of this award include: 2008 – Roger Ross for his contributions to the Golden & District Golf Club; 2009 – Merle and Mike McKnight for their contributions to the development of the White Tooth Ski Area; 2010 - Evelyn Keenleyside for her ongoing work in the Social Service Sector; 2011 – Jeff and Joan Dolinsky for their work in making Golden, BC a cross-country ski destination; and 2012 - Bill Usher for his ongoing work for arts & culture.

Nomination forms can be found online at: www.goldenbritishcolumbia.com or printed forms are available at the Golden Star Office. THE FREEDOM OF MUSIC THEORY THE FUNDAMENTALS OF MUSIC

SUE GOULDBOWLE-EVANS AWARD RECOGNITION OF COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT Theory. Now there is a word that

Any accomplished musician will tell you that with the knowledge of theory comes musical freedom; the freedom to explore the capabilities of your instrument

and know exactly where it will take you. You create music without having to

look at the little black dots on the page. You

might even be able to (dare I say it?)… Improvise!

Understanding music theory means knowing the language of music. The main thing to know about music theory is that it is a way to explain and categorize the music we hear.

There are plenty of intuitive, self-taught musicians who have never learned to read or write music and find the whole idea of learning music theory tedious and unnecessary. However, similar to the educational leaps that come with learning to read and write, music theory can help musicians learn new techniques, perform unfamiliar styles of music and develop the confidence to try something new.

So, what exactly does studying music theory look like? It is the analysis of melody, harmony, rhythm, texture, structure and form. Like I said before, music is a language. You start with the identification of notes (your alphabet) and then learn how to put notes together, either one at a time (melody) or in a group of notes (harmony). It is like creating the words and phrases of music. Let’s add some rhythm, some texture and now we have the beginnings of a really good book. Once you understand the grammar of music, you can even write your own. Even if you aren’t an aspiring composer, understanding theory is an immensely useful tool for sight-reading and memorization.

Most budding musicians who take theory classes are following the exam stream within The Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM). Their theory rudiments exams (Basic, Intermediate and Advanced) are co-requisites for the practical exams of Grades 5, 6 and 7. Even if you are not taking RCM exams, classes in theory provide the basic fundamentals of all music, regardless of where your interests lay - Classical, Jazz or Rock n’Roll. You bet, even the Beatles knew this stuff, and you can too.

Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Theory classes will be offered this fall. They will be specifically designed for passing the RCM exams, however, anyone can take the class and benefit. If you are interested or would like more information, please email:

Nearly ten years ago I fell in love. I fell in love with my son. The first time I held him I felt an incredible, impossible to resist or even fully

understandable love for him that has changed and grown throughout the years but never diminished. What has diminished since giving birth is my self-esteem and the way I view

myself, in particular, my body. I will never forget standing in front of the mirror, naked, in the hospital, in shock. I did not recognize myself. Of course I realized that after pregnancy my body would never be the same. But that had been something secondary, something at the back of my mind, something

to deal with later. Maybe I would be one of those women that miraculously

looked even better after giving birth, not a stretch mark or saggy boob to be found. In the hospital, in front of that mirror I realized that later was now and it was very apparent that I was not one of those women. I was huge! I had (gasp) stretch marks! Not just a few here

and there but ones that stretched across my whole stomach, which now seemed to pooch out slightly on the left side because for some reason my son preferred hanging out on that side of my belly rather than the other. Eventually, when life was no longer a blur of poop and cries and cuddles and sleepless nights and the world seemed like a lucid place to me again, I got back into shape. I worked hard, ate well and lost the pregnancy weight. The one thing that no amount of exercise could change however, were those stretch marks.

Over the last decade I have become a self-belly hater. I have struggled with tops that rode up, exposing the monstrosity hidden underneath. I developed a love for any clothing that floated over instead of skimming my now less than perfect abs. I even understand why a whole generation of women wore the ‘mom jean’ that awkwardly cuts your body in half. At least the ‘mom jean’ covers your belly. I have spent countless hours at the beach or pool pulling one-piece bathing suits that are not long enough for my torso out of my butt. I have longed for the carefree and easy days when I could wear a bikini that shows off my stomach instead of riding up in all the wrong places. Basically, I have spent years uncomfortably tugging and pulling

and pushing clothing around my body in order to hide the shocking reality that I have stretch marks. I have also spent years believing that no man could ever possibly find me attractive once my stretch marks are revealed.

Then, more recently, something changed. I stopped viewing my body as something to be analyzed. I became less preoccupied with whether my body is attractive or repulsive to myself and to others. I stopped focusing on how my body looks and started focusing on what my body can do. I found that my body can take me places. My body can take me to the top of a mountain, across a lake or river, down a ski slope. My body is strong; it can dance all night and then go running in the morning. My body is my ally, not my enemy.

This summer after yet another battle with a too-short-constantly-crawling-up-my-butt one-piece, I decided that enough was enough. With the help of my two beautiful, supportive and patient friends, I picked out a bikini. I wore the bikini. I wore the bikini in front of people. I did not have to pull the bikini out of my butt. I felt happy with my strong, hot body that allowed me to swim and paddle myself across the lake. I had the absolute best day at the beach ever, stretch marks, pooch and all.

What pleasure is travelling if you dread going home?

It’s a topic I've been questioned about many times. People find out how long I’ve been on the road and they often say, “Surely you must be running from something," or "Don't you get homesick?" For some unexplained reason, people believe if you don't get homesick when you’re away, you must not enjoy being home. Yet here I sit, thousands of miles away, with one thing on my mind; home.

Surprisingly, I haven’t been homesick once during this trip, but boy, am I ever stoked to return back to Canada in three short weeks. It's not because I’m fed up with traveling. In fact, pretty much from the first week of this trip, back in December of 2012, I would've been content if someone kidnapped me and said I had to go home. Now, at the same time, in the exact same way, if I was forced to stay on the road I would be equally as happy. For a lot of travellers, when their trip starts coming to a close, they begin to dread returning back home. Life starts to become routine once again and the negatives always bring them down. If you spend your holiday dreading your return home, are you really enjoying your time away to its full potential? Why not embrace home for what it is, and the values home brings us that travelling can't.

There will never be a happy medium between the two and the down sides of both are inevitable. Travelling will always bring joy to our lives that a life at home simply won't. It is not a one-way street. Life at home has fulfillments that one of travelling can't offer. I enjoy being at home for what it is, and I enjoy being on the road for what it is.

In three weeks, I'll see my family and all of my friends again. I'll go to work in the morning, I'll climb at the gym in the evening and enjoy every weekend to its fullest potential. I'll see the same people everyday for more than just a few days at a time and I couldn't be happier about it. I'll work on long-term assignments on an Internet that doesn't move at a snail's pace. I'll book flights to worlds unknown. I'll be looking forward, to the future, at the same time as enjoying the present. Preparing for what's to come whilst embracing a short lived span of being back at home.

Home for me may be more of a geographical region than it is a building. However, I know once I see my family and friends again or the land that I'm so familiar with that the smell of home will be in the air. This makes me more grateful than ever to live the life that I do.

It is always important to have the right tools for the job. In this case, the job is fixing your bike when it breaks down on the trail (or maybe in your backyard). Follow these helpful tips and you will be back on your bike in no time:

1. Know what size tire and valve you’re running and always carry a spare tube. This includes riding the wild beast known as tubeless. Carrying a spare tire? Now, that’s your call. You can buy Kevlar bead folding tires, but they will still take up a lot of room in your water pack or jersey pockets. A cell phone might be a better use of space.

2. The tube is no good to you without the tool to fill it. CO2 pumps are a bit smaller, but easily incite profanity if you didn’t pack enough cartridges to deal with multiple flat tires on one ride. A good mini-pump might just be the way to go.

3. Grab a set of Allen keys and some screwdrivers, packaged into one neat fist-sized utility also known as the multi tool. These are good for tightening anything loose on your bike. If you hear rattling,

tighten it up! Most bike shops can recommend one that fits your size, both your physical and wallet, requirements.

They may or may not include a chain tool. With the new quick links you can get away with having a pretty average chain tool.

4. Anything else is pretty much optional. You can carry a lot with you (or have it sitting in your garage/gear room) but if you don’t know how to use it, it’s really a waste of dollars.

Do you ever wonder how we can ride the same trail every day and absolutely kill it one day while our muscles are screaming at us in pain the next. I believe that everything happens for a reason and that our body mirrors our mental and emotional state.

It all starts with a thought or a feeling, which creates our physical body, which in turn, affects our outside world and those around us. Our feelings are how we manifest our thoughts into reality; we have to think of it first, then feel and know it to be true.

After most of the season of riding and experiencing dramatic changes from one day to the next in my physical abilities, I was more than slightly annoyed. Why is there so much variation in my performance? I am able to keep up to the best of them on Monday and then barely make it up the first half of CBT on Tuesday. I realized the cause; my thoughts are manifesting my reality.

So, I should just change my thoughts. First, I started to write a positive affirmation everyday saying that my muscles are strong with infinite potential to allow me to ride anywhere. The more I wrote it on a piece of paper, ripped it up to let it go and went for a ride, I started to think positive, as if I had already achieved my goal. Then believing it slowly changed to knowing that it was true. Do you know that after a week or so I successfully accomplished a super loop without once getting out of breathe or slowing down due to muscle weakness or pain, not once. It is true that the body has infinite potential and endless strength. If a mother can lift a car off her child in an emergency, the strength is there, it is just believing it, knowing it and then doing it. As soon as we question, there is doubt which leads to failure.

So remember the art to healthy riding is all in the head.

RIVERHOUSE TAVERN

(we rrr the river champions of the world)

The hottest thing capturing the taste buds of beers lovers alike is that local microbreweries’ syrup served up in those 1.89L growlers. Where do you find this tantalizing combo, you ask? Vancouver, home to more beer than you could shake a stick at. That is if you enjoy shaking sticks at beer.

PARALLEL 49’S HOPARAZZI Hoparazzi is an India Pale Lager which is supposed to be hoppy yet fresh and aromatic. With the first drink, I would call it a nice IPA style beer with some refreshing flavours. The second time I tried it I would not be able to give it more than an inconsistently brewed sour swill that has just enough hop to tickle the back of your throat and make you puke up what you regrettably already drank. The worst part was that I had to force it down while I was standing amongst the beautiful smells of what will become Vancouver’s newest brewery: Rocksteady Brewing. Shameful.

TOFINO BREWERY REIGN IN BLONDE

I don’t really remember Reign in Blonde by Tofino Brewing

Co. but I do remember it went down smoothly after every

surf session I had in Tuff City this spring. Driving around the

concrete hell of Vancouver gridlock, staring at my empty growler

would instantly bring me back to those oh-so-rare off shores with refreshingly cool slaps of Pacific water. The

beautiful part about a growler with a Tofino Brewing Co. stamp on it is that no matter where you go with it,

from Vancouver to Golden, everyone will think you are a super cool surfer guy. Bro.

Marilyn knows herself and knows her creative process. “Whenever I consider marketing or doing my art as a business, it feels too much like work and then the impulse to create disappears,” she observes. She wouldn’t be the first one. Most artists have to reconcile what they are doing and whether or not business is the right approach to supporting themselves. It has to work for the individual as each artist’s path is unique.

Living just outside of Golden, BC, Marilyn is a grandmother of four and a mother of two. Over the years, she has built her skills and her lifestyle around art. “I stay busy. Usually I start a project, yet it needs to sit for a while before the next phase continues – whether it be firing or finishing my pieces. If I’ve worked with clay, I’ll move on to paint or mosaics. There is always some project on the go in various stages. I go off into my ‘fantasyland’ in order to

create; it feels like I live there and I love it,” Marilyn shares.

From early morning walks with her camera to painting and sculpting, this lady gets it. Remember when you saw fairies in the innocent and pure state of being a child? When everything looked large, imposing, fresh and full of adventure? Perhaps awestruck would capture the essence of this state. This is how Marilyn stays connected to her inner creator. She’s kept it alive and uses it as impetus to play.

“As a young child, I was always doing something creative. Twenty years ago, I heard about Jane Doel’s raku classes and it was enjoyable and something just stuck. I haven’t looked back. One rainy day I started making fairy houses. Ten hours later, I realized the sky had darkened and I had been in the zone,” Marilyn muses. “I need to create. People want my work because they like it. There

are pieces that I won’t part with, yet others can barely make it out of the box before people buy it.”

From initiating projects, Marilyn, a retiree, devotes her time to being at peace, connecting with nature and utilizing the experiences as inspiration to make art. “Art is so...I can’t put it into words. Everyone sees things in their own way and it’s so important that their way of seeing is nurtured throughout their lives,” Marilyn states.

Marilyn is lucky. Every artist received feedback that shapes their interpretation of their talents in the context of the world. Sometimes, this leads to creative blocks-or worse-the inner voice believing that there is no artist within. Marilyn’s integrity comes from her ability to live out what true art is, listening to the impulse within and making something from the heart and soul.

Honey Honey is a documentary, photography and mixed media project funded through the Columbia Kootenaty Cultural Alliance (CKCA). I've been learning about bees, beekeeping, and honey production from local beekeepers and documenting the bees throughout the process. A selection of images from this exploration will be displayed at the Art Gallery of Golden in a mixed media format. I'm combining the images with beeswax and resin (encaustic medium) to create the final work. Some photos are finished with layers of wax while others are photo-transfers onto the wax. I've also been adding snippets of quotes about bees from a variety of thinkers and writers. The hope is that this work will increase interest in bees and in the global issues surrounding pollinators and food production.

THANK YOU!

Need a boost of courage? Feeling unsettled on your feet? Try this amazing pose: Virabhadrasana II or the Warrior pose. There are at least three different variations of the Warrior pose and today we’ll focus on the second one. It is a powerful standing pose; it opens the hips and the heart helping you find grounding and a sense of lightness – all at the same time.

Start in Mountain pose, standing at the top of your mat. Step your right foot back into a wide stance (three or four feet apart), and then turn your right foot to almost 90°, with your left

heel and right inner-arch aligned. Your torso and hips will face sideways towards the wider side of the mat. With your next inhalation, lift your arms so that they form a straight line out of the shoulders. Reach into the fingers and relax the shoulder blades down. With your exhalation, bend your left knee to 90°. It is important to make sure your left knee is tracking straight over your second or third toe – don’t let the knee splay out or inward. Fix your gaze over the left fingers. Relax your shoulders even as the arms are engaged and straight. Try to ground the baby toe of your right foot. Keep breathing and feel your lower

body and legs becoming grounded, as your upper body and arms become light. To get an idea of the origin for the name of this pose, try bringing your right hand forward to meet the left, and then draw the right hand back as if you were pulling an arrow in a bow. Don’t lean forward over the left leg. After holding this pose for a few breaths, walk your right foot to the front of the mat and repeat on the other side. Namaste.

On October 2, Golden is in for a real treat. The Surrey-based ‘folk-stomp-rock’ band Good for Grapes will be performing at our very own Golden Taps. The real beauty is that no one is going to charge you to get in the door! If you haven’t already heard of this band, then it is time for a quick chat. Much like every Goldenite’s favourite BC-born band, Shred Kelly, Good for Grapes is a foot stompin’ good time. Their seven-piece band of brilliance includes an accordion, bass, two guitars, keyboard, percussion and trumpet. The vocals are spread throughout in a harmonic blend with powerful and profound lyrics. Tracks to check out include, “London Fog” and “Skipping Stone”. This show is worth putting on your calendars so we can show them just how much this town loves good music.

The Real McKenzies have been rocking out for twenty-plus years, leaving every bar where they perform begging for more from their drenched floors and raspy throats. They derive influence from such bands as The Misfits, Flogging Molly and NOFX, just to name a few. Whether you’re looking to scream out traditional Scottish tunes with punk flare or just rock out to their one-of-a-kind originals, these guys will deliver. Developing their sound are six members including fast-hard-punk-rock guitar and Celtic bagpipes.

In the 1990’s, The Real McKenzies were featured in Kokanee’s advertising campaigns and in 2008 their original music was featured exclusively in the B.C. film, “Stone of Destiny.” They even dared to make their own film called, “Pissed Tae Th’Gills: A Drunken Live Tribute to Robbie Burns,” based on their live album of the same title. Since their formation in 1992, they have recorded 11 albums and continue to play sold-out shows. The Real McKenzies will bring their six-piece show onto the stage at Traverse in Revelstoke on September 26. I have been known to think that our humble little ski towns are barren of punk music and this show is going to prove me wrong.

Kicking Horse Culture is proud to present Brickhouse on Friday, September 20th. Having deep roots in the Vancouver music scene, this band is just plain groovy. Formed in 1986, the band is comprised of six members, including a saxophone and piano, emulating a jazzy blues sound with subtle rock influences. The lead singer’s voice is smooth and catchy and his style jives with their bluesy sound perfectly.

The rumour is that the infamous ‘Night Dog’ has returned to the stage, which can mean nothing but sheer awesomeness for their upcoming shows. Having played together for over 12 years, these boys are sure to prove that their time has been well spent evolving their musical genius. I am positive that Brickhouse will show us why they are one of the most respected and acclaimed bands in

Vancouver’s music scene. I don’t know about you but I will be saving the date and getting my groove on September 20th. If you feel like joining in on the fun, get your tickets through Kicking Horse Culture.

Have you ever had a pair of toy binoculars before? The kind that allowed you to see closely at what was actually very far away. If you are like most kids, you also tried to look through those binoculars the wrong way and discovered that things that appeared really close, now seemed

far away.

Binoculars are just like life. Frequently, it’s not the problem, but our perspective that needs changing. Here are some helpful hints to do just that:

1. Todays’ Big Problems are Tomorrow’s Little Problems

Always remember that time heals all wounds. No matter how terrible something feels today, it’s guaranteed to get better over time. It’s funny how the worst day of our life ends up looking a lot better a few days after. Remember to keep in perspective that any situation feels the worst in the heat of the moment and it will feel better when time passes.

2. Remember the Worst Thing that Happened to You Before Today

Oddly enough, when I think about the times in my life when I felt like the world was going to end because of what I was going through, it never did. That doesn’t mean that everything was a pleasant experience or that everything turned out the way I wanted it to but it does mean that things never turned out as bad as I thought they would.

3. Things Could Always Be Worse

When you really think about it, any situation could have turned out worse then it did and there are people out there that are enduring far terrible things. Always remember that it could have been worse. This alone will help to keep things in perspective.

4. Embrace Reality and Look for Solutions

No matter what kind of bind you are in, don’t spend your time blaming your circumstances. The real test of your character will be your ability to cope and ultimately find a solution to your problems.

So, if things seem to be looking down, flip your lens, maybe a different perspective is all you need.

Before I even put the thought in my head that I was going to ride over the rock drop on Pioneer run, I knew that I was making it harder on myself than it needed to be. I had spent the last three years building it up in my head and always choosing to bike around it. I had a mental block and an irrational fear of this rock drop. And then when I finally decided to go for it, I approached it completely wrong. I stood above it for five, ten, fifteen minutes and I worked myself into a panic. My heart started racing, my palms started sweating and I started breathing heavily. On my first four or five approaches where I finally started moving my wheels toward the edge, I stopped. I planted my feet, which only increased my mental block and put this rock drop on any even higher pedestal. What I should have done, and this is what I tell all of the ladies, is to not over think it. Clearly, I didn’t take my own advice.

It was the day before the Western Open at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort when I finally turned off my

brain, as I often do, and made that tight left corner right before the drop, pointing my front wheel at the landing and went right off of it. By the time that I got through the chute below and onto level ground, I was ecstatic! My heart was still racing and my hands and legs were shaking but I was so excited that I finally went over the drop realizing that it wasn’t really that hard. I couldn’t believe how much I had built it up and I ended up riding over it three more times that weekend alone, and it was no big deal. Sure, it may have shaved off only five seconds of my overall time, but I feel like I needed to do it, because, hey, all the pros were doing it. So, the next time you are trying to build yourself up to ride a bridge, a berm, a jump or just a really steep section of a run, the longer you stand above it, the bigger the jump is going to look and the faster you will feel like you need to ride and the harder you will hit the ground. So my advice is don’t over think it and hopefully your instincts will take over.

Since 2007, GoPro and its competitors have made high-quality digital video capture widely accessible and affordable. With seemingly infinite mounting hardware and possibilities, an individual’s imagination places the only limit on how epic their footage can be. Unfortunately, GoPro’s exploding sales and YouTube’s free video-sharing have combined to generate an attention and productivity black hole, where slightly idle and curious minds are sucked into a vortex of endless, pointless home videos and rendered unable to further contribute to society.

Truthfully, there are some remarkable, creative and hilarious clips passing through cyberspace. Take the following list of GoPro do’s and don’ts seriously if you want to stop wasting yours and your millions of YouTube followers’ time.

Don’t: sift through the giga-hours of crap on YouTube looking for something awesome.

Do: have one or two friends who does that and then is willing to show you the highlights.

Don’t: forward every video that puts an idiot smirk on your face to everyone you know using the subject line, “You must see this!”

Do: offer the link to certain friends you think may share genuine interest in the subject; you could be the rainbow in their otherwise dismal day.

Don’t: film every second of your lame vacation to Calaway Park and expect anyone to feign interest while you relive your ride on The Vortex roller coaster.

Do: think to yourself before turning the camera on, “While this

is really cool right now, will I, let alone friends or strangers, think it is anything more than mundane on a screen later?”

Don’t: wear your GoPro like it’s some new, socially acceptable accessory in day-to-day life, you look like a unicorn and your friends wish you were imaginary.

Do: toss it in your pack or pocket when you expect things to get radical or gnarly later on.

Don’t: abuse an angle by turning it into a ten minute movie just because it grabbed your attention in one shot of someone else’s.

Do: experiment with places to mount those robust little cameras for short, dazzling shots.

Don’t: look on YouTube for the clip with the most hits and think you can do better. My tarot card reader told me you couldn’t.

Do: come up with your own idea for a film or clip using your own ingenious mind that will blow everyone else’s.

Don’t: post the hilarious raw footage of your buddy getting hit in the nuts by a wandering firework; somebody probably beat you to it.

Do: spend months fantasizing about, filming, cutting, editing and finishing your creation.

Don’t: use the word viral if it becomes popular, it makes the government and me rather uncomfortable.

Do: tell your friends if you’re really proud of your finished product, like got-your-first-swimming-badge proud.

Don’t: expect me to watch anything you upload.

Over 170 arts, culture and heritage projects—including the Columbia Basin Culture Tour—have received a total of $706,000.00 in funding support for the 2013 –2014 season through the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance (CKCA), in partnership with Columbia Basin Trust (CBT).

“The CKCA Steering Committee was pleased to be able to supply CBT funding to good projects all across the Basin. We hope cultural organizations will start thinking about activities that will be happening between June 2014 and May 2015 and planning their applications now for the next funding cycle,” said Jacquie Hamilton, Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance Chair.

CKCA administers and manages arts, culture and heritage program funding on behalf of CBT. The CKCA Steering Committee adjudicated funding applications in May with input from community arts councils. Support will go toward a wide range of projects, including individual and group projects, master classes, major exhibitions and heritage capital

projects. “Arts, culture and heritage are fundamental to who we are as Basin residents and integral to community well-being in the Columbia Basin,” explains Neil Muth, CBT President and CEO. “We fully support CKCA in its efforts to build long-term sustainability for artists and to strengthen and support arts, culture and heritage organizations.”

CKCA funding helps individuals and organizations realize heritage projects and projects in all arts disciplines, including visual art, theatre, music, dance, media, literature and inter-arts. For a list of funded projects, visit the CKCA website at

CBT delivers social, economic and environmental benefits to residents of the Columbia Basin. To learn more about CBT programs and initiatives, visit:

HORROR SCOPES prescribed by Jason Eastwood

What can mend a broken heart? As I’ve discovered throughout the years, gals and guys suffer through heartbreak differently from one another. I may have mentioned on a few occasions that I’ve been lucky enough to have never been on the receiving end of heartbreak but this isn’t the whole truth. I’ve had it slightly broken and I think it was the upset of not getting what I wanted that caused my heart to sink a little. I changed my mind when I tried to re-nag on a break-up I had chosen in the first place, and he wasn’t having any of it. “Let’s spend some time apart for a while,” he said, “and then if we still want to be together however long from now, we can always get back together.” Like that ever happens.

Anyway, it took me all of a few weeks to snap out of my lonely-heart depression and start to savour my freedom, if you know what I mean. What was I thinking? Why on earth did I try to hold on to this guy that so obviously didn’t want to be with me? It was plain to see that I was much better off without him; I was free! Don’t get me wrong, I loved the guy but we were headed in completely different directions and he wasn’t as committed to our partnership as I wanted him to be. He wanted freedom long before I realized what that even meant for me. He was a chapter in my life that I’ve most definitely learned from and grew from but I wouldn’t go back to in a second! The funny thing is, a year later when I had already been living provinces away from him for months, we had a phone chat that consisted of me licking his wounds and telling him that yes, he did make a mistake, but no hard feelings. He explained to me how much he missed me and that all he wanted was for us to be together. Well, you snooze you lose pal! Learn a lesson and never take love for granted again. The grass is always greener on the other side, right?

Many conversations I’ve had with the opposite sex have been quite similar: “I’m not over my ex-girlfriend. She cheated, fell in love with someone else, moved away, changed her mind, wanted freedom, blah, blah, blah…” Whatever the reason, get over

it! I know that it hurts and can be hard to find closure but she wasn’t the only girl you’ll ever love, and she obviously wasn’t the girl for you. You will love again. Live and let go, I say. People take time to register my reaction to their sorrow but eventually they see things clearly. You can’t change what’s happened to your relationship and if you can, it’s never going to be the same as it was. Once you realize it’s over and you’re free, you will begin to breathe again.

It’s stereotypical to believe that women are the total basket cases when it comes to break-ups; we grab the box of tissues and run to the store for ice cream because it’s going to seem like our world is ending for a while. It’s true that female tears are, more often than not, hysterically shed after the initial separation of a relationship, whereas men, well they don’t cry right? Like at all. But maybe that’s the problem. When suffering through what seems at the time to be detrimental to our existence, girls will ugly cry and we’ll talk it out with our girlfriends and decide illogical reasons behind the demise of our relationship and then, we get over it. Guys tend to bottle their feelings up and don’t want to talk it out with anyone because they know exactly what went wrong, and it had nothing to do with them. Sound familiar fella’s? It’s natural to be hurt after a long or short relationship, people change, feelings change, and sometimes there’s absolutely nothing you can do about it. The worse thing you can do is hold onto it. Hurt and hate are exhausting and if you want answers, ask questions. If there’s no communication between you and your ex, talk it out with your friends. Make up ludicrous, crazy ideas as to why you’re no longer loved by the person that you are still very much attached to. You’ll feel better and it may just bring some much-needed closure to your mind. Not every heart can be mended the same; keep an open heart and an open mind and never be afraid to love again.
