CORRECTION: TheTransformers: Dark of the Moon movie review in our August issue of SMS Unplugged stated that, ”The twist in all of this is that the Decepticons have allied themselves with not only humans do to their bidding, but also Megatron, leader of the Autobots.” The correct information is Optimus Prime, leader of the Autobots. Cinemas, and Chiarelli herself will be available to answer questions and talk to fans after the showing.
Each year a successful Online Talent search gives the opportunity for local musicians to showcase their talent and win the opportunity to perform on the festival’s main stage. Musicians upload their videos, which are then narrowed down to three finalists by the judges. The three remaining videos are then entered into a public vote to determine the winner of the contest and all three finalists perform on the main stage of the Jazz Sudbury Festival.
“What makes it very interesting is that the first round of judging is done by some of our headliners,” said Kivinen-Newman. “Meaning entrants have their music heard by some of Canada’s best musicians.”
Over the years judges have included Oliver Jones, Rita Chiarelli, Joe Sealy, Elizabeth Shepherd, and Richard Underhill, among others.
“This year we’ve been able to add a $500 cash prize to go along with the Sigy Born award.” The award is named after a local jazz pioneer.
Jazz Sudbury festival coordinators make it a point to prominently feature Northern Ontario artists for their events, and this year local groups, No B.S. and Sarah Craig & Sunnyside Paris will be opening for headliners on the main stage. Tommy Fyfe and the Whiskey River Blues Band will also be performing between sets.
“Last year, we were even lucky enough to have Brian Quebec and Jack Broumpton perform with Oliver Jones throughout his entire set,” said Kivinen-Newman. “Which I know was very special to them and to our patrons.”
The festival runs Sept. 8-11. “No matter what your taste in music, you can’t leave disappointed.”
Jazz Sudbury FestivalSOPRANO JAZZ SAXOPHONIST Steve Lacy once said, “Jazz is people’s music, a collectivity.”
For the third year in a row, Jazz lovers will gather at the shores of Lake Ramsey to listen to some of the best Jazz and Blues musicians Canada has to offer, for the annual Jazz Sudbury Festival.

“WE TRY TO EXPLORE THE VAST
MEANINGS OF JAZZ”
This year’s Jazz festival will feature a variety of headliners from all spectres of the genre.
“We try to explore the vast meanings of jazz music,” said Artistic Director Chris Kivinen-Newman, “Leading us to feature vocalists like Matt Dusk, Cuban musicians like Jane Bunnett & the Spirit of Havana, gypsy jazz artists like Christine Tassans, and blues artists like Rita Chiarelli.”
This is also the first year that gospel and bluegrass genres will appear at the festival.
“We’ve added a Sunday afternoon program on the Porter Airlines Stage consisting of gospel and bluegrass.” said Executive Director Carmen Simmons. The Porter Airlines stage will be headlined by Ken Whitely, who has won a Canadian Folk Music Award, Genie Award for best original song in Canadian film, and has been nominated for seven Juno awards and thirteen Maple Blues Awards.
Expanding the Jazz Sudbury festival included the addition of the 1500 Pub as a new After Hours venue, as well as The Townehouse Tavern, he added.
Jazz Fest Sudbury has partnered up with the John Howard Society for a film screening of Music From the Big House, a film by Bruce McDonald about a blues artist showcasing her talent in what used to be one of the most violent prisons in America, featuring headliner Rita Chiarelli. The film will be screened Thursday September 8 at Rainbow

A Lesson In MusicIF ONE WERE to look up music in the dictionary, a definition such as the following might appear: “the science or art of ordering tones or sounds in succession, in combination, and in temporal relationships to produce a composition having unity and continuity” (Webster). However, if you were to ask a random person on the street to define music, you might get a multitude of various responses.
To me music is many things, as it has the ability to change the way we feel, how energetic or relaxed we become, and it can even trigger powerful memories. Throughout time, many people have studied music, and its effects on the human condition. Not only can music make us feel better, increase our energy levels, entice us to dance or sing, it can also help us learn better and retain information better too.
How many times has an old song came on the radio, or you found an old CD, and yet when you blast it out of your old school boom box, all the lyrics are able to find their way from your brain to your vocal cords? Before you know it, you are singing right alongside of your favourite band from the turn of the century. However, if someone were to ask you about what determines the chemical behaviour of an atom you might be stumped…unless of course you became a chemical engineer or your grade seven teacher had created some song about it, and even as you type an article about music and learning, the lyrics are still stuck in your head, and you would know that the number of protons determines the chemical behaviour of an atom. But maybe that’s just me…
The reason behind this is simple. Music increases our interest in what we are doing and increases activation of information. When information is put together in rhythm and rhyme, it provides a hook for the brain to recall this information easier and more readily. This technique works especially well for those trying to memorize information (Brewer).
Music can also be a key factor for those who might have trouble…what movie should I see tonight…focusing. Music has the ability to stabilize physical, emotional and mental rhythms that can help bring one to a state of deep concentration and focus. Music that is composed of fifty to eighty beats per minute will help with this best, and actually help you finish
work not only better, but faster as well (Brewer).
So next time you are at work or in the classroom, and someone asks you to turn off those annoying
sounds you call music, you can reply with...”Sorry, I am improving my work quality at a faster rate of time because
of it!” but I say be polite, and put in your headphones, because not all music works the same for everyone.

Music Is LifeMUSIC IS DIVIDED INTO A MYRIAD OF DIFFERENT GENRES AND LABELS, BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY IT’S JUST ONE THING; MUSIC.Sudbury Music Scene partnered up with Cousin Vinny’s in Hanmer and Valley East Days for an all out music brawl with the first annual Music is Life competition.
“Music is Life was started to help give local artists the chance to play in front of a large crowd at Valley East Days,” said Corey Pascall of Sudbury Music Scene. “It provides an avenue to give all bands in Sudbury an equal chance for that opportunity.”
Each Saturday in August, local bands gathered and performed their best to audiences and a panel of judges. On hand to judge were a mix of musicians and music lovers with the likes of JoAnne Landry, a classically trained guitar player, Jamie Dupuis, JoAnne’s musical partner and Natasha James, events coordinator for Cousin Vinny’s.
Landry was surprised to see the amount of local talent still coursing through Sudbury’s veins.
“The talent is superb, and shocking to know there are so many great bands, who, if we had a wider range of venues, these musicians would have more exposure,” said Landry.
Local talent such as Lightmares, Calendars, Chad Landry and Set were just some of the overall 16 bands and artists who performed.
Sudbury funnyman Josh Charette and other comedians of the Sudbury Comedy Guild were the MC’s for the night and provided entertainment for audience members in between bands.
Acts were judged in four categories of their performance; originality(tone-feel-technical), showmanship, sound balance and set up time(organization) and the judges vote was worth 50 per cent of the total score.
Audience members were given the option to vote on the back of their ticket stubs for two different bands counting for 30 per cent of the allotted score, as well as an online voting portion totalling 20 per cent.
With the qualifying rounds concluding in the last week of August, the final battle happens during Valley East Days where the winning bands from each week perform one last time for the grand prizes.
Bands were competing for some hefty prizes which included, $1000.00 cash, professional studio recording time with Norm McIntosh- who founded the Confederation Secondary School Evolutionary Band. Winners also receive a professional photo shoot, a printing contract, which helps subsidize their printing costs, and each finalist received a published article in the Northern Life.
“The Music is Life competition is a wonderful opportunity for local musicians to show their talent at such a venue,” said Landry. “They build a community and social interaction which allow them to get to know one another.”

Game Reviews by David Boudreau
AN EPIC JOURNEY ENDSOne of many final episodes due this year is the ever popular action-shooter from the series that we all love to hate & hate to love: Gears of War 3. It’s been almost 3 years since we’ve battled the nightmarish Locust Horde on Sera where Marcus Fenix & Delta Squad turned the tides of the war through hard loss and glorious retribution. But this time around, a new threat has emerged...
Eighteen months after the fall of Jacinto, the remnants of the city moved to the island of Vectes to rebuild. As hope seemed to restrengthen their numbers, the Imulsion infected Lambent began to emerge from the ground. Instead of making his last stand, the COG head of state, Chairman Prescott, abandoned the COG. Now without a leader and forced off the island, the remaining human fighters disband and disperse to the any remaining safe havens. While Victor Hoffman takes some survivors to Anvil Gate, Delta Squad sets off on the “Raven’s Nest” naval ship with the remaining humans to avoid any further Lambent incursion.
Also, for the first time in the series GoW3 will feature a 4-player co-op mode to allow you and three other friends to kick some serious butt!
Several new Locust enemies have also been added, including the Savage Grenadier, the Savage Theron, the Digger Boomer, the Locust Siege Beast and the Kantus Knight. Adding to that, the game introduces the new Lambent enemies, such as Drudges, Polyps, and Lambent Stalks.
As for the multiplayer experience, a new game mode called Beast mode has been introduced. Similar to Horde mode from GoW2, the player instead attacks COG warriors as the Locust creatures. Horde mode has also returned as “Horde 2.0” allows players to choose an area as a “Command Post” and earn cash from kills which can be used to build defenses such as wire & laser fences, automatic & manual turrets, and decoys. Other unlockable features are also a treat as you rank up in the online leaderboards.
If you think you can handle the fast-paced, thumb-numbing action be sure to pick up a copy of this memorable finale on September 20th and remember...be sure to take cover behind anything!
XBOX 360S - Gears of War 3 | Collector’s EditionIncludes two(2) controllers, an Xbox 360S with custom artwork skin & a regular copy of Gears of War 3. Everything you need to finish off those Locusts!

Movie ReviewsFRIGHT NIGHTThe original Fright Night was never regarded as being a cinematic masterpiece, but it did manage to be funny, unnerving and all-around fun. The movie (just as so many other B-movies in its genre) has earned its place in the nostalgia hall of fame, which is why the idea of remaking the classic has been met with such dissonance, anxiety, and frustration.
So does Director Craig Gillespie (Lars and the Real Girl) and his well known cast, manage to make their remake a worthwhile Saturday night, all while keeping that which made the original Fright Night a cult-classic?
Short answer: ...Pretty much.
The premise is the same, though the setting has changed: Jerry (Colin Farrell) has moved next door to Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin) in a suburban development north of Las Vegas. Charley is a well-adjusted nerd who is happily paired up with the stunning Amy (Imogen Poots). Charley likes his life as it is now, and he really doesn’t want to listen to his best friend Ed (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), when he points out that one of their friends has gone missing, along with some of their other high school classmates. However, it soon becomes apparent to Charley that Ed may not be so crazy after all. As Charley realizes the truth about Jerry, Jerry realizes that Charley has learned his secret.
Anton Yelchin and Colin Farrell are an unlikely, and yet seemingly effective, pairing. Yelchin is good about conveying Charley’s journey and demonstrates his skill and range without ever weighing the character down by taking things too seriously. Farrell just looks like he’s having a blast as Jerry, a character that allows him to play up both his pretty boy suaveness and bad boy menace with equality.
It’s clear that we’re living in a new age where vampires have taken a sharp turn sideways, straying from their originally menacing presence to something of a pop culture villain. With this in mind, I continue to remain unsatisfied with the “twilight “effect so often observed, but this film managed to pull it off.
All things considered, Fright Night manages to give an old idea a fresh modern spin, but doesn’t sacrifice the original films fun factor as a result. The film continues with the true vampire genre, and adds a shot of fun and adventure to the mix. Definitely one of the better horror movie remakes out there, worth the trip.

Art FocusEVER SINCE local artist Tennille Heinonen’s father brought her to a comic book store at the age of 6, she hasn’t been able to turn back.
“Since then I’ve been over the top enthusiastic about drawing all the time,” she said. “My father drew quite a bit himself and also was very encouraging about picking up a pencil.”
Heinonen has dabbled in plenty of art projects. Painting (oil being her favourite), sculpting, photography and graphic design but prefers digital art.
“I am a massive fan of digital art in every way,” she said.
To make her art 100 per cent custom Heinonen has a specific process to the way she does her work.
“I usually start out with sketches,” she said. “Then I move onto rendering a scanned version of the sketch in Photoshop. After this, I’ll usually go adding in some textures that I’ve gone around gathering with my Nikon D60, in order to make the piece fully my own.”
She notes her major influences as some graphic novel veterans.

“I GOT TO MEET ONE OF THE MOST ENTHRALLING ARTISTS IN THIS WORLD AND IT WAS THE OPPORTUNE MOMENT TO COMBINE MY LOVE FOR METAL WITH MY LOVE FOR COMIC BOOKS.”
“Frank Frazetta, Michael Turner, HR Giger and of course Adam Hughes,” she said. “I love the way Hughes captures facial expressions.”
Music also plays a tremendous part in her inspiration but admits it doesn’t help with the creative process.
“As a diehard metal fan, I am sad to say that listening to metal whilst detailing is probably the worst combination,” she said. “Only because I find it to kill my focus.”
Instead she turns to “idea” music such as Matthew Good, Broken Social Scene, Radiohead and even Nine Inch Nails.
“I very much enjoy lyric-less music,” said Heinonen. Musical scores by Hans Zimmer and Mychael Danna to be exact.
Earlier this year when Alice Cooper played the Sudbury Arena in May, Heinonen created a Cooper themed piece based on his song Nurse Rozetta, to raise money for the Cambrian Arts and Design Scholarship. This specific piece gave her the chance to work with sketch, ink and water colours.
In turn she was able to meet and have her artwork signed by the legendary performer.
“I was more than excited,” said Heinonen. “I got to meet one of the most enthralling artists in this world and it was the opportune moment to combine my love for metal with my love for comic books.”
Heinonen said she received one of the best compliments when Cooper said she’d captured the nurse perfectly.
Heinonen’s future endeavours involve Moving to Toronto to further her artistic career.
“I’m hoping the healthy competition in Toronto will help me better my talents so that I may possibly work with Adam Hughes one day.”
