Words from the Rabbi...

Rabbi Michael Jay

As the air begins to turn crisp, the leaves change color, the days become shorter, and the activity of summer becomes a glorious memory, our attention turnsto the Yamim Noraim, the Days of Awe; it is what we often call the High Holy Days. For many of us it is a moving time of year; it is a time of reflection; it is a time for positive change. Or, at least, we wish it to be this way. Try as we may, we do not always achieve our goals. But this does not give us permission to fail to make the attempt. As Rabbi Tarfon said in Pirkei Avot 2:16, "It is not up not you to finish the work, yet you are not free to avoid it.” At the JCC we try to make our High Holy Days meaningful if not cathartic. Because of our location, this task may be a bit easier for us than other congregations. One might wonder how hard it could be to congregations. One might wonder how hard it could be to feel close to the Holy One and to feel that positive change is possible, when you are nestled idyllically between a magnificent ocean and a peaceful bay, where a glorious sunrise is only a “set of the alarm clock” away, and where a fireball sunset beyond is right out your front door? But “meaning” does not happen automatically and the impetus for positive change requires more energy than merely flicking a switch or opening a door. The question for me becomes, “How can I ensure that this moment provided to us by our Jewish calendar and annual cycle, is used to achieve the greatest impact upon those of us seeking renewal?”  At the JCC our goal is to create a High Holy Day experience that touches as many souls as possible. We try to be warm and inclusive while providing a broad enough experience to connect with each individual’s needs at this pivotal time of the year. Some of us wish to be intellectually stimulated, some wish to be spiritually motivated, and yet others desire the Holidays to foster a “call to action” to do good deeds in the world. The liturgy, the prayers, the melodies, and the choreography of the High Holy Day services, together with my words, hopefully help to move and motivate us. But what else can we do to turn our attendance at services into a more meaningful, if not momentous, experience. This year one overarching message that I will be imparting during our High Holy Day experience will be to seek out how we can be agents of positive change in our selves, our communities, and the world. Our holiday liturgy, texts, and overall structure is designed, at least in part, to help us to realize that constructive change is not only possible, but that it should be a goal we seek to achieve as we move into, and beyond, the new year. Our ability to change is a gift from God and begins with our quintessential Jewish trait of asking questions. In this regard, as I am wont to do, I wish to give each of us an assignment as we prepare ourselves for our High Holy Day season: Where would you like to see positive change in yourself, in your loved ones, or in your community? How do you want the world to be a better place because you lived in it? Where am I wrong? Where is someone else correct? It is never easy to seek truths from ourselves; however, in order for us to grow individually and communally, I request that each of us take this task to heart. I have asked, and will continue to ask, congregants and those attending our services and anyone who has a desire to listen, to seek me out to tell me what I can do to help them feel a part of our community. Is there something you would like to learn? Is there something you would like to speak about? Is there a program or activity that you would like to participate in?

[M]eaning does not happen automatically and the impetus for positive change requires more energy than merely flicking a switch or opening a door. The question for me becomes, How can I ensure that this moment provided to us by our Jewish calendar and annual cycle, is used to achieve the greatest impact upon those of us seeking renewal?

Let’s Love, Not HateThe recent violence in Charlottesville reminds us of what hatred can produce. Over the centuries, Jews have been the object of such hatred. Just a few days after this terrible incident, a rock was thrown at the New England Holocaust Memorial shattering a glass panel in one of a series of six 54-foot-high outdoor towers.

During the Civil Rights movement of the 60’s Jews stood arm and arm with the African American community. I can still picture Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel marching front row center with Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. in

Selma. Some people feel that call to physically join in protest. Heather Heyer was such a person. She felt compelled to speak out against injustice on that fatal Saturday morning in Charlottesville. It takes a special person to do this. If we cannot be part of a peaceful rally against those who hate, what can we do? We can certainly treat those who we encounter with respect; we can remind our children and grandchildren to be accepting of others; and we ourselves can continue to learn to open our minds and hearts to all.

And how can our synagogue be a place where there is love not hate, understanding not misunderstanding? I have always felt that our synagogue was a beacon for all, a place where everyone can feel comfortable and welcomed. Each Saturday morning, in our Torah study session, we share with synagogue members, visitors and members of other faiths the lessons of Torah. It is a wonderful feeling to question and learn from each other. A few weeks ago, we were an “oasis” for an Orthodox traveler, who had to stop his car at sundown one Friday night quite far from his destination. As he walked down the boulevard he spotted the sign for the JCC and stopped to take a break. He was warmly welcomed by the congregation and there was a sense of understanding not misunderstanding of how each of us view our faith.

As the High Holidays approach, let us all vow to do what we can to make this world a place of love not hate and let us begin with family, friends, business associates and all those we encounter along the way.

Wishing all our JCC of LBI family a happy and healthy and peaceful new year.

Rose

It has been so busy here this summer that the summer of 2017 has flown by so quickly. Three days a week, you could get your exercise in with a Zumba class. Also on a weekly basis, you could have stopped in for a Mah Jongg game or competed in the Sisterhood’s wonderful Mah Jongg Tournament in July. We will continue to play Mah Jongg here right into the fall. Each month, on a Sunday evening, we have had a documentary, including one in August that our JCC of LBI was featured in, entitled There Are Jews Here -- the story of how our two newest Torahs came to us. We had two very successful bazaars in July and August thanks to the hard work of many, including Lynn Berkowitz who chaired this event.

Our Sisterhood and Men’s Club have added to our programming, too, with several guest speakers and a poetry presentation by Richard Morgan. Sisterhood coordinated a beautiful Celebration of Life luncheon sponsored by the Starr family in memory of Rosie Starr. There was also an evening of fun at the Sisterhood’s Hoedown.

At the end of July, we had an amazing concert right here in our building that would rival anything you would see at the opera, on stage, or at any venue. Over 200 people attended the Three Sopranos Concert. These three cantors, along with their accompanists, gave the audience a show of a lifetime. This type of entertainment was upscale, elegant, and a complete delight. Many who attended are still talking about it and will be for quite some time.

Speaking of concerts, we had a very special talent here the last weekend of August. Bart Shatto was here! He is a Broadway star who performed as the lead here on LBI! He along with Phyllis Shapell and David Hampson put on two very successful shows.

We had three beach services this summer although the weather was not so cooperative with our July and August service, and we had to bring the beach inside to our sanctuary. We always get a wonderful turnout for these. What a unique opportunity to be able to gather on our glorious beaches to say our prayers.

Rabbi Jay continued his classes on Friday mornings with Class & Discussion with Rabbi Jay, Lunch & Learn on Mondays, and a Torah study on Saturday mornings. He also had Drop-in Havdallah on Saturday evenings with an occasional coffeehouse style sing-a-long. Sunday mornings many joined him to Daven on the beach. In addition to all the wonderful programming, we have made several improvements to our building. Our pergola is up once again and is structurally sound. We have upgraded our sound system just in time for the High Holidays. We also installed a special latch on the handicapped door that can be opened from the office.

Security is always a priority. Thanks to Sisterhood, we have added two more cameras to our security feed. Also, we have installed additional panic buttons in the office as well as in our kitchen. We are in constant contact with our Long Beach Township Police Department who have been very helpful and have been visible at many of our programs this summer.

Looking forward to the High Holiday season. Wishing everyone a sweet and Happy New Year!

Existing Board members re-elected for another term are: Harold Farin, Jon Lombardi, Richard Morgan, Phyllis Sisenwine, and Kem Spencer.   New members elected are Michael Babst, Don Paris, and Joann Ramer. A brief bio was given on each of the new members, and they were each given an opportunity to make short remarks concerning their views on how they can help the congregation and contribute to its success. The congregation was given the opportunity to nominate others, and when none were made, the nominated slate was approved and elected. Outgoing existing Board members Mark Cohen, Fred Schragger, and Karen Schwing were thanked for their service, with special mention and thanks to Karen who served on the JCC Board for 22 years and held many important and responsible positions. She will be missed. The terms for the five Congregation officers and the remaining Board members will be up at our August 2018 meeting, and will have to be replaced or reelected at that time.

YAHRZEIT OBSERVANCES

Please Help Make a Minyan!

! An important obligation that a congregation has to its members is providing a minyan in times of Yahrzeit or Shiva. The JCC has been pretty good about this, but we must try to do better. Minyans are sometimes needed at the JCC, or at Shiva homes on LBI or the mainland. We have prepared a list of names, along with telephone numbers and email addresses of those that agree to being called periodically to perform this mitzvah. There is no obligation to attend each time called, but we hope you will participate periodically. The more volunteers we have, the less time each will have to be called. ! Harris Weisel has agreed to be our Minyan Coordinator. He will contact people by phone or email when necessary.! Please let the Office know if we can add your name or names to this list. As an egalitarian congregation, we are interested in males and females. Volunteers that are in the area all year, or only in the summer are needed. Consider this like a bank account- having a sufficient number of names available helps assure that a minyan can be provided when needed by you. ! Don’t delay. BE A MINYANAIRE. Help perform this mitzvah by contacting the JCC of LBI Office now at (609)492-4090 or [email protected].
