Presidents’ Report I start my report with some upsetting news. Our life member, intro talk organiser and Maker of The Most Excellent Shortbread, Sheila Fielder, had an accident while on holiday in Darwin and broke her hip. I have been informed that after an operation in Darwin hospital Friday 26 August she is now recovering well and hopes to be returning to Townsville early next week accompanied by her carer and club member Penel McNally. I am sure you will all join me in wishing Sheila a rapid recovery from this injury and thanking Penel for looking after Sheila on her flight home. The trialling year is rapidly coming to a close for our club and once again I would like to thank all the members and helpers who have made it such a successful year. On Saturday 27 August 27 we had our second last trial for the year and it was very pleasing to see two of our newer members have success in the obedience ring. Congratulations to both Shari Gallagher with her whippet Cheeky and Kristen Nilson with her Belgian Shepherd Pip. Both these dogs obtained a qualifying score in CCD obedience. Well done Shari and Kirsten, hopefully you both have similar success in future trials. Also congratulations to all those members that achieved unofficial qualifying scores in the Rally O Ribbon trial which was held at the same time as the obedience trial. The day commenced at 2:30 pm with agility snooker followed by all classes of agility and jumpers. It was pleasing to see several members of the public come down to watch the dogs run their agility courses especially the younger members of our community who had great fun cheering the dogs around the course. So my thanks go to Diane for advertising our event in the Saturday Townsville Bulletin and to all competitors and helpers who made it such a

successful day, and of course thanks to all those members who supplied the excellent feast for dinner ably coordinated by our new Catering Officer Margot. Congratulations to all those who obtained qualifications and commiserations to those who just missed out. Remember there is always the next trial. Our final trial of the year is to be held on October 7th and 8th so make sure you have all your entries in early as we are expecting the usual large numbers of handlers seeking their final qualifications for titles. Obedience training is progressing well but we still need more members who are willing to become instructors and help train all our enthusiastic handlers, so if you are interested in becoming a Club Instructor come and talk to Noel McPherson about what is involved. We now only have 3 months of the year left to train the handlers prior to our 2 month Christmas break. My thanks go to all our hardworking instructors and helpers who offer their time every Tuesday free of charge to make Townsville dogs’ good canine citizens. Finally I would like to remind all members and handlers that your Club is always looking for helpers so if you can help in any way with training, trialling, stewarding or catering we are always happy to accept any help so come down and talk to us any Tuesday nights or at our trials to see how you can help. Just Briefly ….

Club T-Shirts are available from

the Club Shoppe on Tuesday night. They are made from a durable

cotton material, great for wearing to training, at trials to fly the Club’s

colours, and will last forever! Cost - $46. Also available at very

reasonable prices are cloth webbing leads, martingale collars,

treat bags and bags of treats.

Rally-o is coming in 2012!!

Practise sessions will be held every second and fourth Tuesday from 8.00pm.

Everyone is welcome to have a go, and is included in your training fee.

Thursday night training is a great opportunity to have one-on-one

training with an experienced instructor. If you have a particular

problem that you are having difficulties with, want to prepare

for entry into a competition or simply want to take advantage of an extra night’s training you are

welcome to attend. Training commences around

6.30pm for about an hour, and after your session with the

instructor can practice more on your own. It’s free!

Keep abreast of the new rules for obedience, agility, endurance and

tracking as issued by the ANKC.

They are free to download from their website

http://www.ankc.org.au/Rules.aspx

The Club Library is open the first

and fourth Tuesdays of each month. We have small but

interesting range of books suitable for the beginner to the advanced

handler, so come into the clubhouse and have a chat to our

Librarian Sheila about what you can borrow. There are no fees, and

books can be borrowed for a fortnight.

Have you enjoyed your classes, love dogs, and would like to help others train theirs? The club

has openings for several Trainee Instructors. You will be paired with an

experienced instructor who will take you through week by week theory and practical on how to train handlers to train their dogs. All

instructors are volunteers who started off just like you – taking a dog through classes,

graduating into Class 4, and then becoming interested in the training program.

To find out more ask to talk to Noel, our Training Co-ordinator.

Calling all Class 4 handlers !! Handlers who have graduated from Class 3 are welcome to continue their training in

Class 4 from 8.00-9.00pm on Tuesday night. This Class is less structured than Classes 1-3, but can be used to start

learning new obedience exercises like heel off lead, change of position, broad jump, and retrieving the dumb bell.

It is a great way to keep your dog active, socialised, and mentally stimulated. Numbers for this Class have been few due to the wet start we had

at the beginning of the year, but now that the weather is clear and cool we want to see more of you!

Feel free to let your Instructor know what you would like to learn on the night.

Red Dog

If you haven’t already seen it you have missed a brilliant Aussie movie that has broken box-office records with extra screenings to

cater for its popularity. Based on a true story spanning the ‘70’s, it is a heart-warming rendition

of a charasimatic kelpie who roamed the WA outback, hitching rides, adopting people and uniting communities along the way.

Look out for it on DVD if it is no longer at the movies, or read the book Red Dog by Louis de Bernieres.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING AUGUST 2011 PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2010 – 2011

2010–2011 has been a very interesting time for the club which included a very wet start to this year which greatly reduced our ability to train for almost 3 months. This was followed by our special 40th birthday celebrations held at our May double trial. My thanks go to all my hard working committee members for all their help and support throughout the year. A special mention must go to Wendy Purdie who has done an excellent job in the role as club secretary and has kept members and handlers abreast of all the club activities through e-mail. I would like to start my observations by thanking all our instructors and helpers that have made Tuesday and Thursday nights training such a success. In particular I would like to thank Noel McPherson for his help as assistant instructor and for doing such an excellent job setting up and helping to instruct Rally O twice a month. I would also like to welcome our two new instructors Pat Cecil and Margot McCudden who joined us from Port Douglas and I would also like to welcome our two new trainee instructors Shari Gallagher and Kirsten Nilson. Without our instructors the club could not function so it is great to have these new enthusiastic trainers. My thanks also go to Renate Linder and Louise Ashworth who man or should I say woman the registration table every week without fail. Also I would like thank Doug Greenwood for all the training he has provided for all our perspective obedience competitors every Thursday night and Rick Slack–Smith for the Thursday night Flyball training last year. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Diane MacIntyre for all her hard work organising and updating the website with the able assistance of Anders and also organising the Members handbook for the new handlers. Our competitions late last year and this year have also been a great success mainly due to the hard work of our excellent trial secretary Louise Ashworth and her sidekick Renate Linder and her new trainee sidekick Carolyn. All these ladies can be seen at trials setting up, stewarding, writing cards and of course packing up. I would also like to thank all those club members who have helped out at our trials, stewarding, and generally

helping out with the general running of these events. Special thanks also go to all the club members and partners who have assisted with the catering at each of these events. I have heard recently from several sources that our club has an excellent reputation for catering our trials. Of course it would be remiss of me not to mention Sheila’s shortbread - who can survive a trial without a shortbread snack? I would also like to thank Diane for all her hard work at trials assisting with the stewarding, sourcing trial prizes and judges’ gifts and spending many hours ensuring our events are advertised on our website as well as in the local paper. Diane also did an excellent job of organising a very impressive 40th birthday cake for the May trial. Last but by no means least I would like to thank all those members who have assisted with the tracking this year. The first trial was somewhat interesting with grass and weeds 2 metres high and mud everywhere but we still managed to have some success. My thanks go to Mal Holland, Dave Horsley and Heidi Christoffel for organising and track laying ably supported by Janette Cussons, Renate Linder and Louise Ashworth. Without all the help received from all these members tracking could not continue. I would also like to thank Mal and Dave for organising the tracking training and enthusing so many new handlers and finally I would like to make a special thanks to our two hostesses, Sheila and Louise for the excellent tracking breakfasts. I would like to close by saying that I believe our club is heading in the right direction by training and enthusing our members in the disciplines of obedience, Rally O, tracking, and agility and flyball with the assistance of the TOADS agility club, and I am sure we will see great advances in the years to come. Thank you all for your contributions to our club. Judy Forbes-Faulkner President COCT Inc.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING AUGUST 2011 TRACKING REPORT 2010 - 2011

What a great start to the 2011 season, with grass over ones’ head in quite a few tracking areas. Some areas were far too wet and boggy to track on and our first Track & Search competition had to be cancelled because the area was overgrown with weeds and had a foot of water laying on most of it. The tracking year ended in July 2011 and has seen a very large number of competitors qualifying at all levels of Tracking from T1 through to Tracking Champion. Quite a few qualifiers have been from Mackay & Cairns. The number of competitors has increased up to 32 for a trialling weekend and this has placed considerable strain on the workers available to set so many tracks. Some good news of course for those gaining their title, let’s begin with : - TRACKING DOG Renate Linder & Demoniaque O’Shea (Belgian Shepherd) Carolyn Lynn & Beychief Miracle Gift (German Shepherd Dog) Mal Holland & Kellor Holy Loch (Australian Kelpie) Judy Forbes-Faulkner & Agislepaws High on Rose (Border Collie) Noel Mc Pherson & Zamashon Elle & Peppsmypal Sumaris Chief (Dalmation) Louise Ashworth & Amberidge Miss Margarita (Rhodesian Ridgeback) TRACKING DOG EXCELLENT Ingrid Groger-Stoner & Sushi (Wolf Hound Cross) Judy Forbes-Faulkner & Sandygate IMA Star (Border Collie) Carolyn Lynn & Beychief Miracle Gift (German Shepherd Dog) Mal Holland & Kellor Holy Loch (Australian Kelpie) TRACKING CHAMPION Mal Holland with Kellor Holy Loch (Australian Kelpie) Carolyn Lynn with Beychief Miracle Gift (German Shepherd Dog)

TRACK & SEARCH Track & Search saw a small but mixed bag of dogs and competitors. Regular starters were Janet Richmond and her Cocker Spaniel Beau from Cairns, Mal Holland & Holly Australian Kelpie and a onetime appearance from Kim Challenger from Mackay and her Border Collie Pharaoh. Mal & Holly enjoyed success with qual in TSD 1, 2 & 3 to reach their Track and Search Dog title under three different judges. The end of the tracking season was in stark contrast to the beginning with the areas dried out and the grass turning brown and harsh, however, from excellent grounds at the start of the season, to poor conditions in July, COCT Inc was still able to conduct three Track & Search Competitions on Fridays and eight normal trials on Saturdays and Sundays during March, April, May & July 2011. Many members and helpers were required each trial and while I can’t mention everyone, some were outstanding with help in conducting our trials, the two main work horses were Heidi Christoffel a club member from Mackay & David Horsley, another club member from Allingham outside of Ingham. These two members were outstanding, spending many days and hours before each trial in getting track areas sussed out and actually laying tracks and judging. For our largest trial in May, Mal & Dawn Holland camped out in the bush for three nights to get the 15 tracks laid in time for the first day’s trialling. Behind the scenes we had many workers, those assisting were administration : Louise Ashworth, catering: Shelia Fielder & Louise Ashworth, our assistant Tracking Officer Janet Cussons setting tracks, stewarding and a host of little jobs, Carolyn Lynn was prominent in helping setting tracks, stewarding and being a general work body, behind the usual scene Noel McPherson spent time and money repairing equipment, Renate Linder tried her hand setting tracks and found there was still a lot to be learnt from being

Celebrating 40 Years of Obedience Training in 2011

- 9 -

involved at the work face and of course we had the usual members putting up Judges and competitors, Judy Forbes-Faulkner, Renate Linder, Dawn Holland. And Diane MacIntyre for her usual role of ensuring that the Judges Gifts and ribbons for the trial were available. A big thank you must go to Vicki & Geoff Toomby for the continued use of their land for the COCT to track on. One must not forget to mention our out of town judges Debby Lamprecht who had the greenest pastures to judge in for many a year, grass and vines up around her shoulders, Roel Wittkamp from the Tablelands who filled in when we were stuck for a third judge, thank you Roel and finally Coral Pethers who had the direst part of the years’ tracking season to judge on when all the burrs and seeds clung to ones’ clothes. At the start of 2011 Mal Holland ran a tracking workshop with four starters, unfortunately, out of that work shop, we only gained one full time tracking competitor, that is Noel McPherson with two dogs. Noel has put his new learnt knowledge to good use with his Dalmatians’ reaching T4 & T5 respectively, not bad for a first year rookie. An interesting development is in place to train two COCT members during 2012 to become Tracking Judges, namely Carolyn Lynn & Noel McPherson, the object of this development is to have younger people to prop up the running of future tracking trials. Hopefully by the end of 2012 Carolyn & Noel will be the main pillar of the tracking fraternity, as it is rumoured that Mal Holland , Heidi Christoffel and David Horsley will not continue to be the pillars of the clubs tracking world, not let it be said that the three mentioned won’t continue to judge or set the odd track and generally help out with advice etc in the future years. However, members must remember to continue to support the would be new judges as their role

will be to judge and give advice to COCT as required and assist to conduct the trials. Recommendation for 2012: (1) COCT restrict competitors at each trial to

eight, that’s with two judges and each judging four competitors.

Rationale: Too many tracks to be set by far too few people. Any more than four per judge leaves the tailenders competing in the hottest part of the morning. More than eight tracks per day are far too many for stewards and judges to set with few helpers. (2) A balloting system is put in place in the

event that there are more than eight competitors wishing to compete.

Rationale: This also will fairly reduce the field to a manageable level. (3) Competitors nominating more than one

dog per trial will only be able to track one dog per trial day if the numbers exceed eight.

Rationale: Again this will fairly allow competitors a turn at competing. I wish to congratulate the members gaining Titles and the appreciation by few of many hours of work that usually goes into the training of their dogs, sometimes, when the going gets tough and there are no quals coming through, it may be time to reassess your dogs abilities or shortcomings and call it a day, on the other hand you may need to research your training arrangements to how much or how little work you are actually putting in, remember, there is seldom gain without pain and time set in the field working your dog. It does not just happen unless you are fortunate to have a natural, I have only seen a couple of naturals in the last thirty years, so good luck, and I wish the club and members trialling success for 2012 and beyond. AGM AUGUST 2011 TROPHY OFFICER REPORT 2010-2011

An assortment of dog treats, toys, prizes and chocolates were offered as prizes throughout the year. The challenge of providing items considered useful within the budget for first, second and third placings continues. The option is always there for an unwanted prize to be donated back to the club, or give to someone else who might want it. I am always on the lookout for new items to use, so if you see something please let me know!! Sponsorship for trials has remained tight over the last 12 months as businesses are still feeling the effects of the financial crisis which does not seem to be improving, and the trend is for companies to provide sponsorship to the larger shows in capital cities where they receive maximum coverage. Thanks to the efforts of our Secretary Wendy, the club was fortunate to receive a Grant from Townsville City Council of $500 for our 40

th

Anniversary Trial in May 2011. I was successful in obtaining pet products and treats from local businesses to use in the Anniversary Bags that were handed to everyone on the day, as well as items for a raffle. My thanks goes to Renate Linder and Louise Ashworth who looked after the setting out and putting away of prizes, and handing out to competitors on trial day, while I was recovering from a broken wrist that put me out of action for six weeks in July 2011. The Perpetual Trophies were reviewed in 2010 and several obedience trophies were retired as the criteria for them overlapped, resulting in the same person being awarded them each year. I have recommended that the Club considers getting at least one more Perpetual Trophy for Rally-O when it becomes an official event in 2012, and perhaps have individual Perpetual Trophies for Novice, Excellent and Masters Jumpers to match the ones offered in Agility. Engraved glasses and mugs were awarded at our annual break up and presentation night to those who won titles in 2010.

Diane MacIntyre Trophy Officer

AGM AUGUST 2011 DEMONSTRATION & PUBLICITY 2010-2011 DEMONSTRATIONS Demonstrations were few and far between over the last twelve months as Council no longer hold Sunday Fundays or the popular Paws in the Park Parties at the dog parks. The one demo the Club held was at the RSPCA Million Paws Walk in May 2011. We have been a regular participant of the MPW, and 2011 marked our 10

th year of providing support to the RSPCA.

We had a bumper number of club handlers and their dogs take part in the Walk followed by an obedience demonstration to a sizeable crowd afterwards. Tmorning was a great success as we had a considerable spike in new handlers registering for obedience classes for the next few weeks. The only other demo that the Club could have been involved in was the Dogs on Riverway in August, but due to my broken wrist I was unable to organise our attendance. PUBLICITY Our website continues to be updated with news and information as required and has proved to be a good source of info for new handlers. Access problems to the site have been linked back to the host, and steps are underway for the site to be transferred across to a more reliable host. The Club extends its thanks once again to Anders Thornblad who has been of valuable and exceptional help in providing advice and updating the site when required. Three thousand club fliers were printed and distributed to all vet clinics, pet shops and the RSPCA to encourage dog owners to do the right thing and attend classes. Articles have been placed in the Townsville Bulletin weekend edition for each trial, as well as community announcements in the Bulletin and Sun, and Channel 10 and WIN TV. These are a bit of a hit and miss as the media decides each week if they will run the article or not. Club members and registered handlers have been kept up to date via email on Rally-O practice, demonstrations and the bi-monthly Magazine. And of course word of mouth is often the best way of promoting the Club and its activities, and is something we can all do! – Diane MacIntyre

2011 DOGS ON RIVERWAY Sunday 14th August 2011

The Club staged a static display at Dogs on Riverway this year as well as a Rally-O course set up for the general public to try and test their dogs’ ability to heel, sit, stand and drop. Our site was out in the open in full sun and with the day being sunny and cloud free it was rather warm under our gazebos. My thanks goes to Noel McPherson who carted all our stuff to and from Riverway, and helped set everything up. Attendance by the public was down on previous years, and some groups did not turn up at all after saying they were which detracted from the day. However, there were quite a few different breeds on show visitors were able to talk to the breeders. Other groups included Delta Dogs, Dalmatian Dog Club, Australian Working Dog Rescue

Inc (left), plus Micro-chipping, dog accessories and food and drink outlets. We had a few interested people stop by and ask about basic training, competitions and advice on behavioural problems. Judy and Noel showed and helped some people and their dogs around the Rally-O course, so hopefully that will generate some interest and see a few more register for classes. Plans are already underway by the Thuringowa Kennel Club to increase publicity and secure more displays and live demonstrations for 2012, and I

have arranged for a more central and shaded location for our club. Diane MacIntyre, Demonstration Co-ordinator

USEFUL DOG STUFF …. Millions of dollars are spent every year on our furkids – toys, bedding, accessories, cars/trailers, food, bling – you name it, we buy it, and it seems nothing is too much for them! Some items are great and are well worth the money spent, others turn out to be not so great. Below are some items that I have found immensely useful and can highly recommend. - Diane MacIntyre Prestige Pet car back seat cover – covers the whole back seat including the foot well like a sling, protecting the entire area. Buckles secure the mat to front and back seat headrests. Hard wearing quilted mat zips in half making it easy to wash in machine.

PetStep Pet Ramp – invaluable for my old black dog Buddy before he left us last year, and now being used by my GSP Caesar. There comes a time in a dogs’ life where they simply can’t leap into the back of utes or dual cabs. Also great for large breed dogs by protecting their joints from being jarred or injured from the impact of jumping. Slides down to half its length for storage, has a non-slip surface, extremely durable and tough, and the lip does not mark the tailgate.

Kramar sponge rubber ball – the best motivator I ever came across for my GSP Caesar! He would do anything for me to throw that ball for him, and I used it solely for training. We gained three Open Obedience qualifications in three trials to achieve our title using one of these balls as a reward for learning the exercises, as well as titles in Agility and Jumpers, so it’s success speaks for itself!

Pet wash bags from Grosvenor Park come in three sizes. I have the Large and Jumbo and they are the best things since sliced bread. Put your pets’ rugs, blankets, towels and toys inside the bag and place in washing machine. The bag acts like a filtration system where water flows freely through but hair is trapped inside and doesn’t clog up the machine. Available from http://www.grosvenorparkproducts.com.au/index.php?act=viewCat&catId=6

Comfort is important when sleeping and what better way to do it than on a non-allergenic doona with a 100% cotton cover to help deter dust mites and other allergens … and the pillow of course. Bono Fido and Snooza are the manufacturers or buy a Tontine doona and cover. Air bedding in the sun for three or more hours to kill dust mites. All items above available from pet stores or on-line.

Some would say, that myself being a Kiwi, I would have naturally decided to get a new puppy from New Zealand, as the language is familiar to us both, and well, when it came to the crunch, we are both All Black supporters. It was a trip with several delays, due to the volcanic ash from South America. It turned out getting her to Australia was a marathon of trips to the airport. It was third time lucky before she finally got on a flight and arrived a week later than intended. Born on Anzac day, she was one of 12 puppies from a particularly robust and active litter. Stepping into the puppy pen was like a piranha attack. Somehow I managed to pick Poppy out of the rabble and returned to Australia with both legs. After some initial jealousy issues the big girls at home, Ally and Meg agreed she could stay. Meg has now taken on the big sister roll, now she has realised her princess status is not under threat. Now they are always playing together and Meg is giving her some much needed lessons in manners. She has attended puppy preschool, and several puppy play dates with other new kids within the club, and is gradually overcoming her tendency to be shy and getting the basic obedience requirements implanted. Poppy spends most of her day trashing the house, gardening, playing with Meg, and eating and sleeping in between the occasional outing. – Louise Ashworth

Below is an article I put in the Boerboel Australia newsletter. I gave the club a plug as well. I had a backpacking trip to South Africa in 1998 and stayed 2 weeks in Johannesburg at a friend’s stockade. He had nine dogs, three were Ridgebacks, 3 were pit bulls and 3 were unknown to me….the Boerboel, or South African Mastiff, which was originally bred as a guard and cattle dog. I fell in love with the Boerboel, and one befriended me while I visited and slept on the couch with me. I had always been a diehard heeler man – but soon was converted. Ten years later I had found myself in Darwin with two mastiff cross dogs (pound specials) but had never forgotten the Boerboel. I didn’t want to import one, the quarantine time was too long and the bonding time lost. That is when I came across Craig Bloom from Ataraxia Kennels and was fortunate enough to be in a position to order a female puppy from a recent litter. I took the trip to Sydney to collect her from Craig, and again it was love at first sight. Her natural guard dog instincts came out early as she protected us on the mean streets of Darwin. There was no unauthorized entry through our gates! Big Avaliona Waldor was her sire and Ataraxia Jessie her mother. I named her Kunka in memory of the companion I had in South Africa.

Kunka, the Boerboel

She was immediately enrolled in Puppy school with Positive Dog training to follow under the guiding hand of Rink Van der Velde. Rink ran the Darwin dog obedience club, and was an old Dutchman who took a real shine to Kunka. We progressed at 18 months to representing the club at the Darwin Pet Expo where Kunka won many hearts old and new. The children found her particularly endearing and she responded well to their attentions. The highlight of the day was the sit and stay, while I moved through the crowd. She didn’t move, waiting patiently for me to re-emerge. We moved to Townsville and joined the Townsville Canine Obedience club, and have continued with our positive dog training. This I believe has given her a very even temperament and is able to socialize with other dogs. We have represented the Townsville Canine Obedience Club at the Townsville pet expo, where again she was well received. We also participate in ‘rally-o’ with the club. She is a very good looking dog, a tan color with black mask and white chest plate and a loyal nature. She was born on the 10/8/2008. I am considering breeding her at some stage. Craig has mentioned a possible suitor, but we will wait and see how it all goes. I have been fortunate enough to find a South African vet here in Townsville, whose brother owns a Boerboel. He always has a liver treat at the ready when we call. – Michael Walsh, owner.

THE CATTLE DOG’S REVENGE If you’ve ever lived upon a farm, you’ll know the feeling well. How easy it can be to get the visitors from Hell. Y’know - those mongrels from the city that invite themselves to stay Because they only want a holiday where they don’t have to pay. Now, I might be pretty cynical and I was just a kid, But I’d seen it happen every year, it’s what they always did, Bring some ice cream and a box of fruit and half a slab of beer, And act like it’s a favour if they stay here half the year. And all on the assumption that we’d be so glad to see The half-brother of our Uncle Harry’s wife’s third cousin Bea. They never do a tap of work. They clean up all our grog. But it all came to a screeching halt the year they brought the dog! Yes, the middle seat was taken by this huge Rottweiler thing. On his neck a studded collar without a hitching ring. The old man stared in silence, then said “You’ll have to tie him up”. They said, “He’s had obedience training, and he’s just the sweetest pup”. The dog bailed out the window. They said “Oh you little tyke”. One word from this mug and he did exactly as he liked, And like a black and tan tornado with a brainless, snarling face, He caused an orgy of destruction ‘round our peaceful country place. He flogged our poor old kelpie bitch and not content with that, Killed six of Mum’s best laying chooks and murdered Grandma’s cat. He chewed our poor pet possum’s tail and chased it up a tree While this dork flicked pages in his book on “Dog Psychology”. And while the city bloke was trying to find answers out of books, The Rottweiler, teeth gnashing, headed straight for Andy’s chooks. Yes, young Andy’s special bantams who’d won prizes at the show, Looked just like they were going to be the next thing here to go.

But Andy was a cunning lad with everything to gain. He raced over to the kennels and let Woody off the chain. And so to vindicate the honour of our simple country mutts, Woody flew into the Rottweiler, and latched onto his nuts. Now Woody is a cattle dog who’s been around for years, And for sportsmanship and honour, he won’t get any cheers, But he has one saving grace inside a multitude of sins. By using every low trick in the book – Woody always wins! From that useless flaming boofhead, there arose an awful howl. They took off down the paddock at a thousand miles an hour With Woody hanging grimly – his feet skidding in the dirt – While my legs crossed all on their own, ‘cause strewth, it must have hurt. He swung hard between two saplings and set his own dog trap When Woody sliding sideways, just failed to make the gap. The bellows of the Rottweiler became a high pitched squeak. He lost all interest in the flight, and sat down in the creek. Then this poor mug from the city, he started acting tough ‘till Dad roared in his face, “You bum! I’ve had a bloody ‘nough! Old Woody did the right thing. The proper thing to do! Anyone who’d breed that mongrel, would be dumb as bloody you!” And Dad’s whole face went scarlet. His eyes flashed hard and mean. He howled, “I’ve seen some bludging mongrels, but you’re the best I’ve seen! So pack your traps and snatch it, you rotten mongrel sod, Or I’ll make a wether out of you like Woody did your dog!” With the air of people greatly wronged, they loaded their pet up And bounced off down the driveway with that castrated pup. But no more will we be troubled by those pushy city folk Who inflict themselves upon you ‘till it’s gone beyond a joke. And sometimes when the ‘phone rings getting on towards Christmas time, Dad’s jaw begins to tighten as he’s listening on the line. Our grins keep getting wider. The Old Man begins to cough Then roars, “I’ve only got two words for you, and the second one is …..OFF!”

OPEN OBEDIENCE

What is Open Obedience? Open Obedience (CDX) is the second level in obedience after Community Companion Dog (CD) (more commonly known as Novice) which was featured in the July-August magazine. Handler and dog complete all the exercises off-lead and the dog must be seen to be manageable, neither lagging nor surging in front while off-lead. The Heel Free exercise includes a Figure of 8 where the dog is to walk around the human ‘posts’ as closely as possible while keeping up with the handler. The exercise for each dog and the maximum points are : 1. Heel Free 30 2. Stand Free For Examination 20 3. Drop on Recall 30 4. Retrieve Dumbbell on Flat 20 5. Retrieve Dumbbell over Solid Jump 30 6a. Broad Jump or 6b. Distance Control 20 7. 3-min. Sit Stay-Handler Out of Sight 25 8. 5-min. Down Stay-Handler Out of Sight 25 TOTAL 200 Less penalties for misbehaviour eg running out of the ring or toileting in the ring. Stand Free For Examination The Judge will ask the handler to move forward with the dog off-lead, and then stand the dog. The Judge will then ask the handler to leave their dog, about turn, and halt facing the dog. The Judge will approach the dog from the right or left, and run their hands over the dog’s head, body, legs and hindquarters. The Judge will then say 'Return to Your Dog', whereupon the Handler will return to the dog. The dog is to stand steadily and not move until after the Judge orders 'Exercise Finished' and must not show undue resentment or shyness. Drop on Recall This exercise is similar to the normal recall, but with a drop thrown in. The dog is to sit and stay where left off lead, come when called, and then drop upon command when about half-way back to you. The dog then finishes the exercise when you call him again from the down position. Retrieving the Dumbbell on the Flat and over Solid Jump You will need to teach your dog to retrieve a dumbbell on command when it is thrown at least 6m in front of him along the ground, or “on the Flat”. Dog and handler then stand in front of a solid jump and the dumbbell thrown at least 4m over it. The dog must be able to leap over the jump, retrieve the dumbbell, and leap back over the jump. The eight of the jump is determined by the dog’s height at the shoulder. In both exercises the dog needs to return and sit in front of you, holding the dumbbell, until the Judge asks you to take it from him.

Celebrating 40 Years of Obedience Training in 2011

- 20 -

Broad Jump and/or Distance Control You can use either of these exercises, and can choose which one you want to do in each trial. Broadjump - The dog, on command, must jump in a straight line over the entire width of the broad jump and return to the Handler. The handler stands at the side of the broadjump to give the command “Over”. Handler then turns to meet the dog as it completes the jump and returns to sit in front of the handler. The length of the broad jump is relative to the height of the dog at the shoulder. Distance Control - The dog is to stand and stay where left, off lead, and respond to your commands given from a distance. The first command is to down your dog, followed by sit, come, and finish. Sit and Down Stays Out of Sight Dogs are left in either a sit or down position, and the handler walks out of the ring and out of the dogs’ line of sight for required length of time. The dog is to remain in that position until handlers return.

How do I get involved? Once you have completed your basic lessons and have graduated to Class 4 you will be shown how to get your dog to heel off-lead, retrieve a dumbbell and execute the broad jump or distance control exercise. Thursday night training from 6.30-7.30pm is a perfect opportunity to have extra practice, and it’s free! Ask your instructor for further info on how to become involved.

What do I do if I want to compete? All dogs regardless of breed can compete in obedience, agility, tracking and endurance, but you do need to join Dogs Queensland (CCCQ). There is a joining fee plus annual fee to pay for either single or joint membership. PEDIGREE DOGS WITH PAPERS Download the Application Form for New Membership 2011 from http://www.cccq.org.au/New-Member-Information.aspx. Complete and mail to CCCQ along with payment. CROSS BREEDS OR NON-PEDIGREE DOGS If you have a pedigree dog without papers or a cross-breed, you’ll also need to download and complete the Associate Register Form. Click on this link http://www.cccq.org.au/Member-Forms.aspx, then scroll down to Registrations and select Associate Register (AR). Your dog must be desexed to go on the AR and a copy of this form must be attached to the New Membership Form and the AR Form. There is a catch though – you can register one AR dog now, but if you purchase a second dog later down the track it must be a pedigree with papers. Or, if you have two non-papered dogs you can register both now but your third dog must be papered. But once all that is done and you receive your annual membership card you can compete in any trial in Australia, gaining titles and even championships in these fields. But the main thing is to make training a fun part of your dogs’ life (find that motivator!!), and enjoy the challenge that each new exercise presents.

HOW TO STOP DOGS FROM BARKING AND LUNGING Ideally, daily dog walks should offer great opportunities for your dog to tap into all his keen senses and for you to work in some enjoyable exercise. If there is one thing that will spoil the whole experience it is coping with a dog that lunges and barks whenever another dog or person approaches. What causes this behaviour? One reason is territorial. A dogs’ territory doesn’t stop at the boundary of the fence in their backyard. Where ever a dog pees while out on walks he is not only relieving himself but marking out new territory, and for some dogs that can be quite a distance. Another reason is fear. So-called aggressive displays of dogs on leashes are triggered by fear, reports Dr. Gary Landsberg, a noted veterinary behaviourist from Toronto, Canada. “Dog owners want dogs that will walk calmly on a leash, but unfortunately, that is not always the case,” says Dr. Landsberg. “Fear is a physiological, emotional and behavioural response to a stimuli – be that another dog, people or even inanimate objects like cars. Fear can arise from genetics, early handling and traumatic experiences as well as how the owner responds to their dog’s actions.” What we do on the other end of the leash is vital in making daily walks with our dogs more pleasing. Yanking back on the lead, yelling or fitting your dog with a check chain will only worsen the behaviour. “Being fearful or angry will increase a dog’s fear and punishing your dog may appear to suppress the fear, but it will lead to more aggression in the long run,” he cautions. “Your dog may stop displaying any warning signs and bite without warning.” Dr. Landsberg offers some insights and practical solutions aimed at addressing your dog’s fear. Among them are:

Rule out any possible underlying medical cause with your veterinarian for your dog’s street-walking aggression.

Recognize that leashed dogs feel their options are limited and may bark and lunge in hopes the other dog will back off.

Set your dog up for success by remaining calm and in control. That means no yelling or baby talk, no yanking on the lead and definitely no hitting.

“Sit & Wait” Exercise Be proactive and respond to the approach of another dog before your dog does. When the approaching dog is close enough, and before your dog starts barking and lunging, stop and ask the dog to sit. Move in front of him and use your body to partially block your dog's view of the other dog. Let him nibble on some treats or a chew until the other dog is gone. Give him heaps of praise in a low and calm tone – “good dog, good boy, what a good dog you are”. “Watch Me” exercise Get your dog’s attention by teaching him "watch me" so you can get him to focus on you before he's close enough to another dog to lunge.

Start with yourself standing in front of your dog with a really good treat. Hold the treat up to your face until he makes even a split second of eye contact. When he does say "watch" or "watch me" and immediately give him the treat. Work your way up to asking for longer eye contact and you no longer put the treat up to your face to get him to give you eye contact. You can then progress to walking the dog, and at the approach of another say “watch me”, and reward the split second he looks at you. Repeat until you have walked past the approaching dog. Soon, the approach of other dogs will equal treats and praise from you, rather than a bark and lunge festival.

LURING AND/OR REINFORCEMENT BY REWARD Training our Canine Friend can be interesting, a pleasure, or quite a challenge. There are various methods whereby we can train our dogs. We are going to look at two methods - Luring and Reinforcement. LURING The definition of luring is to attract, tempt, or entice. Luring then, is when a handler takes a treat and lures, that is, attracts, tempts or entices the dog with the treat to sit, stand, or drop or do some other activity. When this is accomplished, what has been learnt? Passivity! If the handler continues to use this method for any length of time, it is very difficult to progress, because the dog has learnt to wait and wait and not respond until the food appears; that’s what gets learned!! Luring leads to a learned behaviour of waiting that is not helpful in training, and leads to a dead end. We are aiming to engage our dogs, get their attention and give them the desire and excitement to work. We need to develop a rapport with our dogs through games, walks, play etc. and then they will be happy to be with us and respond to training. REINFORCEMENT (reward) A reinforcer is that which reinforces. It can be, among other things, food, praise, toy, tug- toy, clicker or a ball. Food seems to be the most popular reinforcer of desired behaviour. It is easy to acquire, carry and use, and has a high success rate. To use successfully as a reinforcer, or reward, a dog should be under its normal weight. It is possible that rewards can change for different activities. Sometimes food is the go, other times a tug-toy or a ball carried in the hand, and when the given task is accomplished, the ball chase is the reward.

In a one on one situation, we have time to develop shaping, but in a class situation we break information into small parts, show the dog the task and reward every correct occurrence until the behaviour is learnt. Then other tasks are gradually added and success rewarded. Then, to maintain high performance it is important not to reward every occurrence of success, but to move to a different schedule of reward. That is, gradually fading the reward and rewarding for example, every second time, or every fourth time; and finally moving to a random form of reinforcement or reward. The dog then does not know when to expect the reward, and keeps working in anticipation, for it internalizes that it depends on him/her to do something to receive the desired reward. It should now be clear that Luring leads to the learned behaviour of waiting, while Reinforcement leads to learning the desired behaviour. If for some reason over time, the dog has lost the learned skill, it is then appropriate to return to rewarding every correct task, and then move to random reinforcement. Finally, it is interesting after a training session to look back at the session and consider what has been learnt. If you are not disciplined or mindful of when, and why, you are giving a reinforcer, then your dog may well be learning, but not what you think or set out for it to learn. Unfortunately, we as handlers are often at fault, but our ever trusting, faithful friends do learn despite our lack of skill, but may not reach their highest potential. Alison and Dr Fred Annesley

CHAMPIONSHIP TITLES If you have really excelled and won a Championship Title then you can have your photo framed for posterity. Just ask Mum or Dad to provide a high-quality photo up to 8 x 10 in size to Diane and she will arrange for it be professionally framed. Or, you can instead have a large trophy to the same value as the framed photo. PERPETUAL TROPHIES Winners of this year’s perpetual trophies will be determined from title applications received. So even if you haven’t quite made it to a Title but think you could be in the running for a Perpetual Trophy, ask Mum or Dad to check out the trophies criteria. They can be viewed on our website www.coct.com.au – click on Brags from the home page then 2010 winners. Mark the title application form “PERPETUAL” so it doesn’t confuse Diane too much …!
