This month sees the start of “meteorological autumn” which seems to have arrived all too quickly this year! Here at Green’s we have been busier than usual and we now have our new farm store open on the Thirsk site which has allowed us to dedicate more time

to our farmer customers. The original store is now a dedicated country store and is stocked full of pet, poultry, horse and other companion animal feeds and accessories.

We are also opening a new Dog Grooming facility, so come and treat your best friend to a wash, cut and blow dry!

We have also installed a new computer system. After 11 years our old one simply could not cope with the amount of information we process! You will notice a difference in the

layout of your invoice and statement and we know we will have some “teething troubles” so please bear with us. I can assure you we have a great team of people here who are working hard to ensure a smooth transition, so if you have any problems, give them a

call. Thanks for your patience.

THE FARMER SUE TICKLE COLUMN

Question: When should I start treating my cattle for liver fluke?

Answer: The life cycle of liver fluke involves a snail host whose activity is dependent on moisture and temperature. As the conditions become wetter whilst remaining warm, the mud snails become more active. Larvae are released from active snails between August and October which develop- into the infective stage and can survive on pasture for several months to infect grazing cattle. After ingestion the parasite can reach the liver and bile ducts in six weeks.

I would recommend you treat your cattle for liver fluke in the next month or so. And as the same larvae infects sheep as cattle I would recommend you treat sheep at a similar time also. Call us for help on choosing the right fluke treatment for your cattle and sheep.

RAT BAIT OPTIONS- start baiting now!

There is actually a lot more involved to baiting rats effectively than just putting rat poison down. Rats are generally wary of new things so try not to move bait stations around too often and get them down early so that they are already in place before the rats move in. It can take a couple of weeks for rats start feeding from a newly placed station so untouched bait is not always a sign that the rats are not there. The type of bait you use can also make a difference, if you have a lot of grain in store and are baiting with grain rats may be less likely to eat from the station or place packs if they can easily get the same elsewhere. Try using something different or more palatable in cases like this. We have a full range of Downland rat poison available in store, all for professional use, see below-

Grain Rat Poison - Active 0.005% Bromadiolone or 0.005% Difenacoum. Available in 20kg, 10kg, 5kg and 3kg and 10kg and 5kg of 100g sachets. For indoor and outdoor use for rats and mice. Rapid take and fast acting. Micronized to prevent germination. The most cost effective way to purchase rat poison. Block Rat Poison - Active 0.005% Bromadiolone or 0.005% Difenacoum. Available in 10kg, 5kg and 3kg. For indoor and outdoor use for rats and mice. Contains highly palatable mixed cereals compressed into a block with plenty of ‘nibble edges’ for enhanced bait take.

Paste/Pasta Bait - Active 0.005% Bromadiolone or 0.005% Difenacoum. Available in 5kg of 10g sachets. For indoor and outdoor use for rats and mice. Contains cereals and peanut butter oils for maximum palatability. Mould resistant. Paste/Pasta Bait – Active 0.004% Brodifacoum. Available in 1kg, 3kg and 5kg. For indoor use only for rats and mice. Contains cereals and peanut butter oils for maximum palatability and can kill in a single feed. Mould resistant. Signature required when purchasing.

AUTUMN TREATMENTS FOR CATTLE

Autumn wormer- Animec pour-on cattle wormer is for the treatment of gastro-intestinal nematodes, lungworms, warbles, chorioptic and sarcoptic mange mites and sucking and biting lice in beef and non-lactating dairy cattle. Containing 5mg/ml ivermectin. Dose rate: 1ml per 10kg Meat and Offal withdrawal: 28 days

Treating early stages of Liver Fluke Triclacert 10% drench treats and controls acute, subacute and chronic liver fluke in cattle. Dose rate: 12ml per 100kg

Vitamin boost Bovithrift drench is a high specification chelated multivitamin drench suitable for calves, youngstock and adult cattle. High levels of B Vitamins, Iodine and Cobalt have a positive impact on growth and fertility. Highly concentrated multivitamin drench helps to improve overall herd health.

FOOTVAX

Constantly foot bathing and treating lame sheep for footrot? Get on top of the problem with Footvax! Footvax is the only vaccine available to treat as well as provide longer term prevention against footrot. It contains 10 strains of D. nodosus, and so offers broad protection from the disease. A programme to control footrot should ideally begin in a dry period in the summer or autumn. Weaning is a good time.

Dosage: 1ml Initial Course: Two doses, 6 weeks apart by subcutaneous injection.

If, after 4 - 6 weeks significant levels of disease remain in the flock, administer a further dose.

Otherwise delay this dose until conditions favour re-emergence of the disease. With

severe and constant disease challenge,

revaccination may be necessary at 4 - 5 monthly intervals; otherwise a yearly booster

should be sufficient in preventing the disease. Contra-Indications – Withdrawal: zero days. Do not use in lactating

dairy sheep. Do not vaccinate sheep within 6–8 weeks of shearing.

Can be used during pregnancy however do not vaccinate ewes in the period of 4 weeks before lambing to 4 weeks after lambing. Sheep

destined for show or sale should not be vaccinated within the previous 6 months due to the occurrence of a well-defined, lump at injection site.
