Horse Race / Shootout Thursday, September 11 & 255:00 PM Cost: $5 per person

This event is a great time! Its almost full contact golf as your competitors egg you on, sometimes in your back-swing.

Two-person teams alternate their shots while the high-scoring teams are eliminated on each hole until there are only three teams left. Out of those three teams, we will award a Win (1st Place), Place (2nd Place), and a Show (3rd Place). Serious golfers should leave their sensitive side at home for this event; we like to have fun!

Peg N KegMonday, September 22 at 4:00 PMOnly $5 per person

This putting contest is a favorite among our residents. Test your putting skills on our ever changing 9-hole course and quench your thirst by sharing a keg of beer.

Most people know to get plenty of aerobic exercise to burn calories, maintain heart health, control blood pressure and cholesterol, etc. And, its true that cardiovascular exercise provides a good amount of immediate calorie burn. Strength training, how-ever, provides a myriad of benefits which are too important to skip.

Reason 1 - BUILD/MAINTAIN MUSCLEWhile strength and muscle are critical for movement and function, they also provide an enormous boost to the metabolism. Recent research from Penn State University looked at subjects who lost more than 20 pounds of body

mass on aerobic or strength training programs. Those doing aerobic exercise lost six pounds of muscle in addition to fat. Those losing weight via strength training lost nearly all of the weight in fat and some participants actually gained muscle mass.

Strength training can provide a metabolism boost up to 25% for up to an hour afterward. With aerobic exercise, the post-workout metabolism boost is neither as large nor as long-lasting. Building and maintaining muscle is a great way to create an ongoing boost to the metabolism.

Reason 2 - INCREASE BONE DENSITYWith age comes greater risk and likelihood of bone loss. This, of course, increas-es risk of bone fractures. Many physicians recommend strength training as the best prevention, and even cure, for loss of bone density. Based on research from McMaster University, a one-year strength-training program increased spinal bone mass in women by 9%.

Reason 3 - IMPROVE POSTUREStrength training works all the muscles of the body. With stronger leg, back, and core muscles, stability, balance gait and ability to stand upright are greatly improved and dimin-ish risk of falls.

Reason 4 - PREVENT ILLNESSBy boosting metabolism, strength training will help control blood sugar and reduce fat storage. This lowers risks of both diabetes and heart disease. In addition, strong muscles take a load off and stabilize arthritic joints in the spine and the rest of the body. This can reduce the pain and inflammation of arthritis.

Reason 5 - IMPROVE MOODIn general, fitness improves confidence. Any exercise, and especially strength training, creates a consistent level of mood-boosting hormones called endor-phins. This is a great way to relieve stress and increase happiness.

Aerobic exercise is great for cardiovascular health. Adding strength training to an exercise program can provide a host of additional benefits to health and fitness.
