J OURNALTHEDear Readers,

At last the summer is almost behind us! I would like to apologise if you are reading this magazine a couple of days later than usual, but as you know getting anything done in Spain during the month of August is nothing more than an exercise in futility. Everything grinds to a halt and it seems like the entire nation takes a month off and heads for the Coast. Now that we are in September, everyone is back at work which means things are back to normal. Which is to say, no different than when everyone was on holiday. Here at Journal Towers we spent a lot of the time when we should have been working, glued to the Olympics and we have to say a massive well done to all of team GB who did the nation proud. Also a special congratulations goes to Britain’s Andy Murray on winning a gold medal in the men’s singles Tennis and commiserations to Scotland’s Andy Murray for only managing a silver in the mixed doubles. On a completely different note, I was wondering if any of our readers have a copy of the rules of queuing in the post office on Camposol? While waiting patiently at the front of the line to collect my mail the other day I received an extremely hard punch in the kidneys from the person behind me. When I had recovered enough to be about 68% sure I wasn’t bleeding internally, I turned round to confront my assailant who happened to be a small but butch looking woman in her late 60´s. Before I could open my mouth I was subjected to a torrent of abuse, not because I had queue jumped, but I had apparently allowed myself to be queue jumped by someone else, a crime so heinous and grave that it is punishable by instant violence. I genuinely never knew that queuing in a post office could be so dangerous. Next time you’re in the post office and you see someone in a stab vest, riot helmet and flanked by 2 Rottweiler’s be sure to smile and say hello. It will be me collecting my post.

I hope that you enjoy this month’s issue. This month Rod tells us tales of his adventures from the far flung destination of York in his out and about column. As usual Dawn´s column is not to be missed and our What’s Going On Guide is jam packed with all the events that are taking place in the area throughout the month of September. We would also like to welcome restaurant Amapola to our magazine. For those of you who don’t already know Restaurant Amapola in Bolnuevo has a reputation for fantastic food in a wonderful setting. Don’t miss their advert on page 9. To see what fantastic deals they have on food and drink. We now have well over 1,000 readers signed up to our mailing list. When you sign up each month we will send you a copy of the magazine straight to your inbox before the printed copies hit the street. If you never want to miss a copy of the magazine again then see the box below for details on how to sign up.

Happy reading and have a fantastic September.

Regards,

Robert Rutherford

CAMPOSOL FARMACIA EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

WITH THE NEW PHARMACIST!

For what seems like an eternity, the population of Camposol have been eagerly anticipating the arrival of a Pharmacy. Like many things here in Spain, the answer to when it would

eventually arrive has always been “Manana”. Well, The Journal can exclusively reveal that tomorrow is finally here and very soon Camposol will have it very own Pharmacy. Here we have an interview with our new resident Pharmacist along with the reasons that

we had to wait so long to have this vital service here on our urbanisation.

1: Isabel, you were granted the Licence to open the pharmacy two years ago, why has it taken you so long to open it?The process of adjudication was based in a professional contest of merits, and needs time to resolve all steps, legal, administrative, meeting the requirements you need to open a Community Pharmacy. Since a Community Pharmacy is a health facility, the place is very important and have to pass stringent tests of location, accessibility, safety, conservation of medicinal and pharmaceutical products.

2: What criteria did you have to meet to be granted a licence for the pharmacy? The licence is granted following very strict rules, all of them based on the professional career of the applicants, studies and experience according to the scale of pharmaceutical regulation law in the Region of Murcia. Points are scored according to such criteria, and the applicant who obtains the highest score is granted the licence.

3: Then obviously you obtained the highest score. Can you tell us how you managed to achieve so many points?I studied the pharmacy degree at the University of Granada, in the same university after I published my dissertation obtaining a Doctoral degree in pharmacy. I started working at the Hospital Universitario Virgen

de la Arrixaca, in Murcia, specializing in Clinical Biochemistry and Clinical Analysis, since then I have been exercising my care activity in the laboratory, teaching and research until now, collaborating in the direction of several doctoral thesis, conferences, preparation of lectures and continuing education courses.

4: Wow, we are really surprised at the experience that you have gained throughout your career! You must really love your work.

Well, I love my proffesion and I have been working really hard during all these years to be able achieve such caree; it is just the result of such effort and I thank God for allowing me to develope it and being successful.

5: So after all this time, when should we Camposol residents expect to welcome you to our urbanisation and when the pharmacy eventually open? We have already started the works at the Business Centre on Sector A, and my inttention is to open end of September beginning of October, once the works have been finalised and inspected by the Health Authorities. I am really looking forward to meeting everyone and being able to attend to all Camposolers with the intention of enhancing their health, and ensure that Pharmacy Camposol is a real place of pharmaceutical care.So there you have it Ladies and Gentlemen, no need for rumour and gossip, Camposol will soon have its very own Pharmacy. Remember- you heard it here first!

Did I just say that ?Here are the top nine comments made by NBC sports commentators during the Summer Olympics that they would like to take back:

1. Weightlifting commentator: “This is Gregoriava from Bulgaria. I saw her snatch this morning during her warm up and it was amazing.”

2. Dressage commentator: “This is really a lovely horse and I speak from personal experience since I once mounted her mother.”

3. Paul Hamm, Gymnast: “I owe a lot to my parents, especially my mother and father.”

4. Boxing Analyst: “Sure there have been injuries, and even some deaths in boxing, but none of them really that serious.”

5. Softball announcer: “If history repeats itself, I should think we can expect the same thing again.”

6. Basketball analyst: “He dribbles a lot

Carthaginians and Romans Festival

This fiesta takes place in the second half of September and celebrations run for ten days. The city which is home to Spain’s main

Mediterranean naval base, Cartagena, in the Murcia Region, was, as its name suggests, founded by the Carthaginians. It was founded as Qart Hadasht (Punic for new city) by the Carthaginian general, Hasdrubal, in around 227, and soon became the Carthaginians’ main centre of operations in the Mediterranean. Then came the Second Punic War and the

Carthaginian commander, Hannibal, departed from Qart Hadasht in the Spring of 218 BC for his epic march over the Pyrenees and the Alps into northern Italy at the head of an army of thousands of troops, cavalry and war elephants.Hannibal’s

campaign against the Romans in Italy was to last for 16 years.

Rome was meanwhile concentrating its campaign outside Italy in Hannibal’s main source for fresh troops and supplies,

Iberia. A heavy defeat at the Battle of the Upper Baetis in 211 BC wiped out almost the entire Roman army, and a new commander was sent to lead the Roman campaign in Spain.Publius Cornelius Scipio, the man who would later defeat Hannibal in the Battle of Zama in 202, arrived in northern Spain in 210 BC, when all Spain South of the Ebro River was in Carthaginian control. He decided to make a daring assault on the Carthaginian capital in Hispania, and marched his troops from Tarragona to Qart Hadasht in the southeast in early Spring the following year, reaching the city in less than a week.

Page 7: September magazine

NEWS

Hit by a joint attack from land and sea, Qart Hadasht was quickly taken and became Carthago Nova – New Carthage.Today, the people of Cartagena celebrate that period of their rich history with

the Cartagineses y Romanos festival, running for 10 days in the second half of September. These relatively recent celebrations open on the penultimate Friday of the month with a call to the gods for the sacred fire to light the torch which will remain lit night and day throughout the festival. Later on that night, is the presentation of the Carthaginian troops and the Roman Legions, before they march to the festival’s military camp. The following days see a living chess tournament, the wedding of Hannibal and Himilce, a Roman circus, and the Carthaginians disembarking in the port

before a re-enactment of Hannibal’s departure from Qart Hadasht to Rome with 90,000 troops, 12,000 cavalry and 50 war elephants. The next Friday sees the recreation of the sea battle which formed part of the Roman forces’ two-pronged attack on the city more than 2,000 years ago, followed that afternoon by the Legions disembarking to join their land troops before Qart Hadasht is taken for Rome. The battle ends with the capitulation of the Carthaginian commander, and a victorious march through the streets of

New Carthage by the Legions who took the city for Rome. The final day sees a homage to the Roman soldiers who fell in the battle, and forces from both sides parade through the streets of Cartagena.

The Lions Club of Mazarron Bahia

Recently when the Lions Club of Mazarron Bahia were having our weekly stall on Sector B Camposol a local resident of Camposol asked what we did with the money we collected, stating at least with the dog charities he knew it went to helping dogs. It was therefor decided that we would tell about our recent activities in our quest to support our local community. At Christmas we were able to donate Carriers of Happiness to two hundred needy children of Mazarron who were thrilled to receive their wonderful toys. 2,000 euros was also donated to the Aspadem centre in Mazarron for children and young adults with disabilities following an urgent request for help towards maintenance of use of the school´s very important swimming facility due to anticipated but critical need. For the last year we have been selling items of bric a brac at our stall every Friday. This money however small has been banked for our Lorca Appeal to help rebuild a centre for children which was destroyed in the Lorca earthquake of some o of May 2011. We were delighted to recently transfer 11,000 euros to Lorca. We were also pleased to be enable to be able to sponsor two children with diabetes to go to a summer camp for Diabetic

children.During July and August we have run

activity mornings for the children at Camposol with pebble painting, which the children of all nationalities have thoroughly enjoyed. At one time we had children from Spain,Ukraine, Morocco and Eqaudor as well as many from the United Kingdom. They all enjoyed and helped each other and there are plans to continue the activities over the coming months by request of many the children of Camposol. We have recently decided

to help sponsor the train which runs at Camposol as a way of saying “Thank You” to the many people who have

supported us and helped make all our activities available. Other plans for continued support to help our local community are : A Diabetes Awareness Day planned for Saturday November 10th with a sponsored walk from the Marina at Puerto de Mazarron. Many people are not aware that they are suffering Diabetes and tests will be available on the day. We are also producing a Lions Cook Book towards funding the text books for exclusive use of students whose parents cannot afford to buy them. And our Carrier of Happiness Christmas appeal will also start soon.

The Lions Club of Mazarron Bahia would like to say many thanks to all who have supported us and enabled us to help others. With special thanks also to Luis Canovas the Camposol Business Centre for providing us with a room for our meetings and for workshop and storage for our Christmas distribution

LINDA BIGGS REPORT ON MEETING WITH FRANCISCO (PACO) GARCIA FIRST DEPUTY MAYOR & COUNCILLOR FOR TOWN PLANNING. 14th August 2012 WATER – SECTOR A Francisco(Paco) Garcia sympathized with the recent intolerable cuts in water supplies which had severely affected those houses higher up the hill. The problem in recent days was worsening culminating in many houses lower down the hill also without water. Paco Garcia confirmed that each time I had sent a text to him he had responded by contacting Aqualia, also the e-mails copied to him to keep him fully aware of the plight of the Sector A residents and holidaymakers. This is verified by the presence of Aqualia each day, even though some days for only a short while. The water on occasions was restored only to be lost again some days and even hours later. I have lived here more than 12 years and this is the worst episode that I can re-call. Paco explained to me that the prime reason for the water failures was a surge in demand because of amount holidaymakers in the whole Mazarron

municipality. This demand seems to have been greater this year (perhaps because of the heat) than others and the Council acknowledge that the general water supply managed by Aqualia which comes to the municipality via a Company called Canales de Taibilla needs to be significantly increased during the month of August in future years. The depletion of the general supply meant that our Deposito at the top of Sector A struggled to re-fill. This resulted in pumps that were operating dry and therefore burning out, so that when there was water available the pumps did not work!! A vicious circle! Many of the visitors to the Port and Bolnuevo will be heading home this weekend, some who arrived at the end of July perhaps having already returned to their homes. Paco Garcia is therefore very hopeful that this extra demand is subsiding and that the supplies for Sector A are now returned to normal. Paco stressed that we were not the only affected urbanization, there are others that have houses at higher levels and they suffered similar problems with water not getting to those properties.

RINGING AQUALIA AVERIAS (MADRID) Paco Garcia agreed that we should indeed

be able to ring Aqualia for ourselves as we have valid Contracts. This is a huge call Centre in Madrid who are not familiar with our urbanization and perhaps are confusing the fact that we on Sector A have valid Contracts with them for our water supply and Sector A has been adopted, whereas at the moment BCD have received water supplies from Justo y Manoli (Masa) with the meters being read and bills produced on behalf of Masa by Aqualia. I have tried to explain this to Aqualia in Madrid over the phone to no avail! During normal working hours Tatiana at the Council office in the Cultural Centre on B, can pass on reports of leaks, no water etc and any other general problems. Paco Garcia confirmed that I can also contact him any time it is not a problem and he will respond immediately he sees the message. (He is not having a holiday this year so will be available to help). You can contact me on [email protected] SECTOR A GARDENING GROUP – APPLICATION TO ERECT A SHED Following Paco Garcia’s advice at our last meeting, this application was officially delivered to the Town Hall when receipt of which was confirmed with a date stamp and reference number. of the referenced documents to Paco Garcia explaining that the Group now are without a storeroom for their books, the main source of their income. Whereupon he telephoned one of the Technicians who confirmed that this application will be placed for approval at the meeting this Thursday. D32 Turisticos Paco Garcia needed no reminding of the promise given to the owners of D32 regarding speaking to Justo Quesada (Masa) with a view to getting the embargos lifted and moved to other designated assets. Also this meeting is to be about the whole of Camposol. The meeting was planned for June but has not taken place due to difficulty in arranging a time when Justo Quesada will actually be in Spain. Paco said he is obviously hoping to arrange the meeting for September as there are many things to discuss. As soon as I get any news on this I will let you know. BRIDGE TO C&D Paco was unable to give a firm date for these repairs but is hoping it will be in September. I said that if the Gota Fria comes then it will cost a whole lot more to repair. Paco agreed, but the problem is money. THE first Saturday in October that’s the 6th once again the beach will rock with the sounds of CAFÉ CONCERT 2012. This year held at the Playa Grande Hotel half way between Bolnuevo and The Port of Mazarron there are 6 very different musical acts to suit every taste and with all the musicians giving their time and talents for free. Doors open at 3 pm and the show must finish at midnight.

There are special rates for those wishing to stay in this stylish hotel and food and drinks will be at normal prices. The entrance fee is just 5 Euros and there will be a raffle and tombola and maybe an auction. What great value foer money. Thee are limited sests so if you come late it might pay you to put your chairs in the boot of your car. This event regularly draws crowds of 4/500 people and is the largest one dayCharity music event on the Costa Calida.

CAFÉ stands for Community Ambulance Fund Espana and has been created top raise money for an additional ambulance

to serve the Mazarron area. With a budget price of 60000 Euros the fund currently sits at 41000Euros and the CAFÉ CONCERTS form an integral part of the fund raising. The quicker we hit the target the quicker we get this additional ambulance. Originally it was hoped that this could be located to the north of the area but the financial logistics of a stand alone ambulance defy that dream, however based in the town of Mazarron together with the Fire Brigade and the other ambulances nd close to the Red Cross centre the on site management is first class. We as expats offered to buy the ambulance if the Ayuntamiento serviced, maintained and staffed the vehicle. This was agreed with the previous administration and confirmed by the current incumbent. So lets all get down and ready to rok Saturday 6th October 3pm Playa Grande Hotel 5 Euros. Tickets from Costa Calida Radio or from PALS members. Income tests for foreigners

Spain has introduced ‘proof of income’ measures for EU citizens who are not in work and who want to live in the country for more than three months

EU citizens in Spain could face proof of income tests if they wish to reside in the country for more than three months, as the Spanish government implements what has been described as “a crackdown on migrants” as it seeks to resolve the ongoing economic crisis.

As such, municipal councils, the National Police and international embassies are urging non-Spanish nationals to familiarise themselves with the new residency requirements (they can be found on many town hall and embassy websites), which have been introduced by the Spanish government.

Under the new rules, EU nationals registering on the ‘Registro Central de Extranjeros’ (National Foreigners Register) in order to obtain residency in Spain may be required to produce evidence of “sufficient financial means to support themselves and their dependants.”

Applicants may also be asked for proof of private or public healthcare insurance. One Benalmádena-based lawyer said: “Those who are working will have an income and medical cover – although they will still need to demonstrate this via the ‘Vida Laboral’ form.“But those not in work will now need to prove they can support themselves somehow and that they have adequate medical cover.”On this latter point, Anette Skou, Head of Mijas Foreigners’ Department, specifies: “If you’re not working, you must present a private insurance document or an S1 from the public health service from your home country, plus proof of income (which includes a pension) of no less than 5,008 euro annually.”

A further 8,763 euros is also required over and above the 5,008 euros per dependent family member.Failure to produce the correct documentation

could result in residency applications being rejected. However, Fuengirola’s Councillor for Foreigners, Katja Westerdahl, said “If you do not have a certain, specified document upon making the application, you are given 10 days to provide it. But if you fail to do so (after that period) your request will be filed as ‘invalid.’”She added: “If you are already registered in the National Police’s Foreigners Register and have your certificate, the new law doesn’t affect you in any way. If you have failed to renew your inscription and more than three months have passed, you will have to meet the requirements of the new law in order to get it done.”Motivations

The Government is said be rolling out this policy as it believes it could save up to one billion euros annually on providing healthcare to foreigners who are not entitled to it.A statement issued on Monday by the

Queuing for information at a foreign residents’office.

countries. We understand the new rules will affect a relatively small number of expatriates.“Anyone who has further concerns can also seek advice from the Spanish authorities about their personal circumstances.

Ministry of Health said the measure will “result in improving the allocation of services and will contribute to ensuring the sustainability of the public health service.”

Of course, under European laws any EU citizen is entitled to receive medical attention in any other member state. But Spain’s government is justifying the new residency requirement by drawing on a 2004 EU directive on “free movement”

which gives member states the authority to define, “without prejudice to national border controls” – meaning EU countries can restrict entry to other citizens of other member states.

For its part, the British Embassy in Madrid said earlier this week: “We are aware of a recent change to Spain’s implementation of long-standing EU residency legislation. This change simply brings Spain in line with many other EU

Borrowing costs tumbleMADRID, Spain (AFP) - Spain’s short-term borrowing costs tumbled Tuesday as it raised 4.51 billion euros ($5.6 billion),

buoyed by the possibility of European Central Bank invervention. The Treasury raised the cash in a sale of 12- and 18-month bills, enjoying a lull in interest rates following ECB chief

Mario Draghi’s comments that the bank may resume bond purchases if necessary.

Compared to a similar sale on July 17, the 12-month rate slumped to 3.070 percent from 3.918 percent and the 18-month rate dropped

to 3.335 percent from 4.242 percent, Bank of Spain figures showed.Demand outstripped supply by more than two-to-one, allowing the Treasury to exceed its target range of raising 3.5-4.5 billion euros.Despite tens of billions of euros in spending cuts to rein in a bulging public deficit, Spain’s borrowing costs this year have climbed to danger levels and prompted speculation of a full-blown bailout. The eurozone has already agreed to extend a rescue loan of 100 billion euros to secure Spain’s banks, which are staggering under a pile of bad loans from a construction boom that went bust in 2008.

It was reported that the Spanish Airport Authority, AENA, has denied what the President of Ryanair, Michael O’Leary, said about the landings in Valencia on July 26.

AENA has rejected the claim from Ryanair that other companies had fuel problems. O’Leary had named Easyjet and the Chilean airline LAN as having fuel problems, but AENA said these two planes had ‘other technical problems’.

AENA said that the only planes with fuel problems in Valencia on that day were Ryanair, adding flights were also diverted by Vueling, Air Berlin, Easyjet and Iberia. These flights landed normally.

O’Leary has

Interest rates have eased somewhat recently, however.

The ECB’s Draghi sparked a market rally on July 26 when he promised that the bank for the 17 nations using the euro was ready to do “whatever it takes” to preserve the euro.

Hopes for dramatic ECB action eased somewhat when Draghi later said only that the bank “may” resume bond purchases. But the possibility of action has still been enough to support the market so far this summer.

AENA rejects Michael O’Leary’s claims on fuel

It follows three Ryanair planes being diverted to Valencia from Madrid because of bad weather.

Dawn Llewellyn-PricePhew, summer’s been exhausting. Thankfully the Olympics are behind us and my personal best of sofa surfing and remote twirling records were smashed. Measure for measure tears shed during the Dressage and other equestrian events meant I achieved Llantrisant Gold in the Lachrymatory event, and duly took my full bottle in for its just reward. (Yes, the medals were made at the Royal Mint in Wales.)What happens now? Ah, it’s September, that exciting month, and another major event much closer to ‘home’ where hordes of men in yet more skimpy costumes do a marathon around the Calles of Cartagena, jingling their golden bling and attracting crowds to equal any Olympic event.I’m talking the Romans and Carthaginians, the Carthaginians and Romans, or even los Cartagineros y Romanos. However it rolls off the tongue, we girlies get to see troops in leather and fur banging their hardware against chest plates with as much gusto as can be raised with a pair of sunglasses in one hand and twenty Bensons in the other. It’s a case of suspension of disbelief as in the main it’s a pretty impressive event, and easy to be transported into the middle of ‘Gladiator the Movie’ despite a few leopard-printed pushchairs, mobiles, and other 21st Century items. Think ‘Ben Hur and the Mini’ although allegedly a myth.Once the ‘Romans’ is over, all is done, summer is behind me, and I may as well go home to Wales and hibernate. I suppose it all goes back to my teenage hormonal years when ‘Arthur of the Britons’ filled our TV screens and teenage talk at school was how gorgeous was Oliver Tobias and how we all loved those leather and fur costumes. This, coupled with the fact Sarn Helen, a Roman Road ran behind our abode, and frequent sponsored walks along it meant the closeness to this civilisation filled my formative years, an affinity with all things Roman was forged. That’s my excuse, what’s yours? You’ve never been? Now, I know of people who have never been despite the closeness of the events

taking place between 21st and 30th of this month. How anyone can miss this huge spectacle is beyond me; the effort the locals put into this mammoth sized extravaganza must surely mean it’s worth a trip on at least one night? You won’t regret it.

Unlike the time I appeared on a TV magazine programme to discover pre-recording that Oliver Tobias would be there too. Huge excitement amongst all females present, self-included, naturally. Unfortunately the Tobias who had been stuck inside my wardrobe door (from the pages of a teenage magazine) was no longer. Slightly worse for wear (and with a very sweaty face) my hero waned slightly. Not enough for me to refuse the ‘Smuggler’ booklet, (he was promoting a new series) a hastily scribbled phone number and address, (business capacity) and a sneaked plastic wrapper off a filled roll he had eaten.

I still have them.Once a fan, always a fan.

Stars over Camposolwith Keith JacksonLast month we saw the return of Pegasus - the Flying Horse as it reappeared over the eastern horizon. By now it is much higher in the sky and the Great Square should be quite easy to spot. Apart from being a useful signpost when looking for other constellations it is also a great indicator of how dark your sky is, and thus, how good the “seeing” is in your area. “Seeing” being a measure of how steady the Earth’s atmosphere is and the level of light pollution generated by street lamps etc spilling upward into the night sky. For example, a lot of turbulence in the atmosphere makes it difficult for astronomers to use high magnification telescopes effectively and the level of light pollution determines the number of stars that can be seen by naked eye astronomers and star gazers. The number of stars you can see inside the Great Square of Pegasus is an indication of how dark your sky is. If you can’t see any stars within the square then your “seeing” would be classed as poor, 1 to 3 stars reasonable and anywhere between four and 13 stars is good. If you can see more than 13 this indicates excellent skies. Also in September we see the return of Perseus (The Hero) and the large but faint constellation of Cetus (The Sea Monster or Whale)The appearance of these two completes

the cast of 5 characters in the Greek legend of Cassiopeia and Andromeda.Andromeda was born of Cetus and Cassiopeia the King and Queen of Aethiopia. It is said that as Queen Cassiopeia walked along the shores of the sea with her daughter Andromeda, she saw, below the water, the beautiful sea nymphs who were the handmaidens

of Poseidon the God of the Sea. When Cassiopeia saw the Nynphs she boasted that she was more beautiful than they. The sea nymphs became upset and cried to the sea god Poseidon who declared he would punish Cassiopeia by flooding and ravaging Aethiopia with storms unless she sacrificed her daughter to Cetus, the sea monster. To save their country, Cepheus and Cassiopeia chained Andromeda to a rock by the sea in sacrifice to Cetus. However, Perseus (The Hero) riding Pegasus, his winged horse, just happened to be on his way home from slaying Medusa when he came across Andromeda about to be taken by the monster. Perseus used the head of Medusa to turn Cetus to stone and thus rescued Andromeda. It is said that the two were married and became the ancestors of Hercules and their descendants started the Persian race. Agol (meaning “head of the demon) is the second brightest star in Perseus and represents the eye of Medusa. You may also see Agol wink, caused a dimmer star in its binary system passing in front of it. Spooky!

Just below Andromeda is the small constellation call Triangulum. Triangulum was known to the ancient star-gazers and was originally called Deltoton, in reference to the shape of the Greek letter Delta. Egyptian astronomers also thought of these stars as a delta, but in the sense of the delta of the river Nile; and so to them it was named Nili Domus, home of the Nile. You will be able to see and track these constellations as they move across the sky well into the New Year.

with Rod Sawyer in York This month I am coming to you via e-mail as we are on holiday in Sunny old England. There are worse places to spend a few weeks and we have hit the nice weather. It’s our first visit in years and we are noticing the differences in prices. £15 at the Gold Cup for admittedly one of the best Sunday lunches I have had in years in a wonderful setting in the

countryside outside York. An excellent smoked mackrel starter, separate veggies, all home cooked. York is of course a very popular tourist destination and apart from visiting the family, we also visited the Railway museum. This place is amazing, huge. We enjoyed looking at the royal trains, Edward even had his own de luxe smoking room. There were all types of trains from the amazing Japanese fast train and trains going back to the earliest steam engines. Wandering around York

is a splendid pastime, there is even a shop dedicated to cats! Complete with all kinds of cat memorabilia! However the twin climaxes have been Matalan for very cheap outsize clothes and Whitby for the fish and chips. There lies the best chippie in the world, the Magpie. Whitby was packed out on the first day of the school holidays, and the first sunny day of the summer! However the Magpie where you usually queue down the street was queue less and we got a table for three straight away. Haddock, chips and peas, divine. We have eaten out a few times, seeing family is quite time consuming! York is blessed with an enormous range of restaurants and pubs. Jamie Oliver has just opened one, booked up of course. There is a delightful Japanese restaurant where we had a Japanese curry, delicious, the obligatory queue outside Betty’s for tea and buns, tea hog roast, a great Italian restaurant called Lucia, and many bistros. The new in thing in the UK at the moment seems to be gourmet burger restaurants where of course the burgers are

to die for! York also has the Minster. We went to a Sunday service there, magnificent setting and a superb visiting American choir. The cathedral was packed and virtually everyone went up for communion. There is a splendid Catholic Church just down the road, but the scale of the minster, its stained glass, ornate architecture make it one of the most magnificent buildings in the world, let alone the UK. We stayed in a delightful Bed and Breakfast near the City centre, Warrens, nice room, great hosts and brilliant breakfasts. Our only quibble so far is the cost of hiring a car. Stay more than a few days and it becomes exorbitant; taxis are a solution, but even these were a fiver to get into the city centre York is definitely a five star destination. We didn’t do the city walls, but where else can you walk the walls of a city? We also did some more mundane activities, watched Spiderman in 3d; again a brilliant experience. Not on a par with York’s mystery plays which are hundreds of years old and this year in a temporary amphitheatre down by the riverside. We went out to Fairburn, by the cooling towers where they have created a bird sanctuary at the lakes which serve the towers. Above them is the three Horseshoes; a village pub with a star rating £14 for two huge Barnely chops to die for; two exquisite slices of pate with toast and homemade chutney and salad to start. All in all we have had a brilliant holiday, lots toe at and drink and lots of sightseeing done. I look forward to coming back to Spain for a rest! See you next month, Rod Sawyer

CAMPOSOL RESIDENTS

ASSOCIATION

At a recent meeting with Jose Gomez (Pepe) Councillor for foreigners, updates on various matters were obtained. The council are still negotiating with Masa for the completion of outstanding works; hopefully they will be completed with the co operation of Masa as the legal route through the courts is a very long winded way to resolve the problems. The water supply and Aqualia´s position as supplier was discussed in depth. We were informed that negotiations with Aqualia are progressing. None of us have paid water charges since March but once the council sign contracts with Aqualia the bills will start again, best put some money aside as the bills will be a lot higher than normal due to the length of time since we last paid. Those without meters need not worry as no one will be cut off. It was the council’s intention that Aqualia will use an office in the Cultural Centre if necessary for residents to visit rather than everyone having to travel into town.

Aqualia´s neglect in reinstating pavements after leaks was raised and Jose agreed to put pressure on them to carry out repairs.

The CRA had received on its website numerous complaints about the dirty

and untidy area surrounding the B Commercial centre. Some residents had indicated that they no longer use the centre or take their visitors there because of the state of the area. The committee decided that although not their direct responsibility they had a duty to the business owners to bring to their attention the residents complaints. The committee was concerned that if residents stopped using the facilities, businesses could fail and a downward spiral could occur. We had already seen one large bar close.Once again Masa had failed the business owners who through their high rent payments, which includes cleaning charges, had totally failed to keep the areas clean. It is hoped that following a meeting with the business owners they will form their own committee to address the problem. Improvements have already been instigated.

The CRA was asked by Masa to vacate

the land it had occupied opposite the commercial centre following a court case in which the land was seized by the court for outstanding debts. The CRA cabin has now been re located to a position at the side of the Cultural Centre on Sector B. Thanks to Jose Gomez for giving permission for our use of the land.Following refurbishment, the cabin will re open for business on the 3rd of September and be open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 11am and 1pm.

Imagine the dedication required to carry 5 litres of water into Parque Los Palacios twice a week in order to water the plants in the large display pots, when your only reward is the knowledge that the hundreds of people who walk past regularly will enjoy the pretty flowers. Imagine the disappointment at 8:30 a.m. on Monday July 30, when after carrying the water, our dedicated volunteer discovered that one of the pots had been stolen. The thief had ripped out the pretty flowers and emptied the compost in order to steal the large planter. More disappointment caused by the erection of the large advertising billboard in our parque, which was placed so as to obscure the view of the recently created diamond jubilee rose display. Whilst erecting this blot on the landscape damage was caused to the watering system. Fortunately we have managed to repair the damage. This sign was erected without planning permission or consultation with the residents association who have contacted Parkandflymurcia to demand its removal. Five communications in all were sent to the Company, the Director telephoned in response. The board has been dismantled.

More good news. Everyone is looking forward to getting back to work again in September, with lots of projects planned. To help fund this work there will be a special evening at Lara’s Bar on Saturday, September 29, featuring The CAS Band, and Vera Lynn (tribute). Tickets are only 5 euros, and all proceeds to Los Palacios Garden Volunteers. Hope to see you there !

Our Summer Dance was a resounding success: The Beagles played lots of great music to suit everyone’s taste; at one point I looked around to see loads of white-haired people, arms in the air, pogo-ing…Only in Spain! We all had a fabulous time and raised much needed funds for the continuing improvement of our area – thanks to you all for buying raffle tickets and supporting us.

High Summer temperatures are once again upon us so please give any plants near your casa a good drink as they’re suffering in these hot winds, as are our thirsty team who have not just been street clearing, but repairing the dreadful potholes on the dual carriageway! They too would be very grateful for any drinks offered by you! We have been granted the

use of a garden waste container, thanks to the efforts of Bernard and Tatiana, at the junction of Calles Aralia and Ibiscum on C2. This is for green waste only and will be removed by the council if any rubble or kitchen waste appears in it.

September sees the re-commencing of our volunteer working parties on Wednesday mornings; if you can spare a couple of hours and some energy to help, we would be really grateful and your time would be rewarded with a free

breakfast! We are continually praised for the effort our teams make to transform ‘C’; it’s hard to remember what it used to be like before the manicured verges, trimmed trees and cleaned streets, but without the support of volunteers this simply wouldn’t happen, so if you’d like to make a difference, and new friends at the same time, please contact us!

The ‘Auction of Promises’ is now to be held on 12th October at the Golf Club with DJ Dan – Admission is only a 1 Euro donation per person, then you will be able to bid for the ‘promise’ of someone else’s time or skills: We have had many offers of time to be auctioned off, but need a few more people/businesses to donate their talents please! Only a couple of hours given by you will help raise much needed funds to improve ‘C’ for all of us and local support for your business will surely grow afterwards! We are also accepting donations of any unwanted items which will be auctioned on the night; so give us a call if you have anything suitable to spare? Please give generously and help others who may need your expertise, thank-you.

Our Christmas Party will be at the Golf Club on 5th December, with a 3 course meal and entertainment, all for 18 Euros, so save the date! Porsche 918 Spyder Test

Mules Spotted near Valencia

The Porsche 918 Spyder is currently running through its testing

phase. A total of three test mules are being used across the world to test

the new German supercar. The test mules were spotted on a highway near Valencia,

Spain last week. In the footage below you will see three 918

Spyders driving by the lens of a cameraphone. Each of the cars has a

different livery. Rumours suggest that the car with the Martini Livery is the test mule for the Track Package.

For a premium price, Porsche will fit the 918 with the optional

Race Track package which includes a stripped-out interior, an unpainted

exterior, and likely some technical tweaks. The Race Track package also sheds some weight, resulting in a total weight of “less than 1,700kg”.

The 918 Spyder will be powered by a petrol powered 4.6 liter V8 and

two independent electric motors – one on the front axle and one in the drive line, acting on the rear wheels. The total amount of power will be 762 horsepower and 750Nm of torque. Fuel economy is estimated at three litres per 100 kilometers which

translates to 78mpg.

The German carmaker plans to build a total of 918 units of the 918 Spyder, from which an estimated 20 percent will be delivered with the Race Track package. Production of the hybrid sports car will commence

the 18th of September 2013 (9/18), pricing will start at € 645,000, subject

to taxes and country-specific charges.

Spotted: Lamborghini

Aventador J in Marbella

The Lamborghini Aventador J is probably one of the rarest car’s you’ll see on the road. Lamborghini produced just one example and sold it for £1.75m (plus taxes) to an anonymous collector. It turns

out that the collector lives in Marbella and he has been showing off his purchase over the weekend The pictures aren’t brilliant

but the guys over at MotorPassion really weren’t expecting to see it!The Lamborghini Aventador J gets its name, rather bizarrely, from the sporting rules of the FIA world motorsport organization.

Its “Appendix J” defines the technical specification of race cars in the various

classes. It gets the 6.5 liter V12 with 700hp power rating and the same 1,575kg dry weight as the Lamborghini Aventador. Obviously, the design features a speedster roof. It uses a new type of carbon fiber fabric called “Carbonskin” made of woven carbon fibers soaked with a very special epoxy resin that stabilise the fiber structure and keeps the material soft. Rumours have been started that suggest its another Al Thani car. We’re not convinced though. It was spotted with a Lamborghini Reventon Roadster and backing into a garage containing what looks like the Bugatti Veyron Grey Carbon Edition, and an Aston Martin One-77. Enjoy the pictures. Hopefully we’ll be able to bring you more pictures of this extra special Aventador some time in the future!

UK car industry enjoys 22% rise in

production

Almost 120,000 cars were built in July, up 22% on same period last year, says Society for Motor Manufacturers and Traders.British car production is still revving ahead of the rest of the economy after official figures showed an increase in output for the 13th month in a row.

Almost 120,000 cars were built in the UK in July, which is up 22% on the same period last year, according to the Society for Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The figures came in the same week that one of the industry’s great export successes, Jaguar Land Rover, moved to a 24-hour operation in order to keep up with soaring demand from Asia. The latest SMMT total means that year-to-date production is running at 875,998, an increase of 15%.

Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive, said investment commitments from producers with a major UK presence, from JLR to BMW and Toyota, had underpinned the growth. “While uncertainty in Europe remains a challenge, the £6bn investment committed to the UK in the last two years delivers long-term growth opportunities, and the latest figures show that our products have enormous global appeal.”

The car industry is at the forefront of the government’s “march of the makers” because it is such a strong export sector, with around eight out of 10 vehicles built in the UK sold abroad. Domestic demand for vehicles has slumped, with car sales falling 4.4% last year, in a stark example of rebalancing the UK economy away

from domestic consumption to export-driven sectors. The Unite union’s assistant general secretary, Tony Burke, said: “Britain’s car industry is continuing to buck the trend being set by an unsupported manufacturing industry. The month-on-month increase in output is proof that investment works and that, when skilled UK manufacturing workers get the opportunity, they deliver world-class products.”

Rainbow, but the boffins at Red Bull have managed to get one of their Formula One cars to ‘sing’ the American national anthem. The Austrian team managed to rig the engine so it could rev the relevant notes to make up the Star-Spangled Banner. The stunt was performed by the team’s showcar in New York’s Liberty Park in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty. The tuneful performance was to promote the 2013 Grand Prix of America at the Port Imperial Street Circuit in New Jersey.Formula One returns to the States for the first time in five years in November when the United States Grand Prix gets re-launched on a new track in Austin, Texas before Stateside F1 fans then get to enjoy the two events on the 2013 calendar.

A Postcard From Royal Lytham

By John Brown

Will Adam Scott recover from the biggest implosion since . . . . .Newcastle United lost a 12-point lead in the Premiership to Manchester United.

Jean Van De Velde threw away a 3-stroke lead at the 18th hole at Carnoustie in 1999 to let in Paul Lawrie.

Thomas Bjorn took 3 shots to get out of a titchy baby bunker to let in Ben Who? Win at Royal St George’s in 2003 (he was called Ben Curtis).

Doug Sanders had 2 putts to win the Open at St Andrews in 1970 to beat Jack Nicklaus and inexplicably took 3 putts (it’s easily done).

Rory McIlroy led by 4 shots with 9 holes to play at Augusta in 2011.

Greg Norman blew a 6 shot lead to let Nick Faldo win the 1996 Masters.

History suggests that most of the above players (apart from Rory) had a difficult time recovering from their disastrous meltdowns.

This year the winner was surely the Royal Lytham links. The best players in the world tried and failed to overcome its challenges, aided and abetted by the increasingly suspect R & A. The water table was high. The drainage ditches to the edge of the course were full of water, and it was lying only about 6 inches or a foot below the level of the fairway. This meant that many of the fairways were draining into the bunkers, and many were full of standing water. The R & A blamed the weather. Hay-ho it’s been raining! Ok, it has felt like a constant deluge, but the design of the course may be too old to bring up to date for a modern championship? But what bunkers! All 203 of them. They were the old ‘revetted’ design. This means the front wall is built from upturned grass turfs built like a brick wall. They were usually 6-foot high and

Sportsstrictly vertical. If your ball gets too close to the edge of the wall, then you would need to chip out sideways. The grass continues to grow in this design and they need to be hand trimmed. That is why they aren’t seen in the modern course, because most cutting tasks are done on ride-on machines.

The R & A’s Rules of Golf are still stupid. Players were supposed to lift and drop from the bunker puddle. When they did so their balls ended up plugged. Playing from a plugged lie in a bunker over a 6-foot vertical wall is a bit harsh. Players should have been able to place their ball. The R & A seemed a tad arrogant when they said ‘players shouldn’t be going into bunkers if they are playing well. Bunkers are meant to be a penalty. The Rules of Golf can cope with standing water in bunkers.’ I don’t think so.

We had just left dry and sunny Spain and temperatures nearing 40 degrees. Lytham was a balmy 18 degrees in comparison. The R & A don’t seem to recognise that there is a double-dip recession in place. The entry fee was £40 for the practice days and £70 for Thursday and Friday. The park and ride was £15. We took a look at the weather and skipped the Wednesday practice day, saving £95. We opted for a single day on the Thursday opening round. So, £140 to get in, £15 for the park and ride, £70 for a night at the Premier Inn Wigan (don’t go there) and £10 for an egg sandwich and a coffee for breakfast. I was thinking “give me Liz’s café anytime.”

We tried following the Tiger for about 6 holes. It is almost impossible to follow Tiger properly due to the large

crowds that follow him on the course. We were stuck in a bottleneck in the narrow spectator lane between 2 holes when I made the mistake of saying to Mrs B “It’s hardly worth coming if this is all we can see!” She was very quick to reply: “We have just handed over £235 to see this, so it better be worth it!” It was said with such ferocity and very swift arithmetic that I realised that she must have calculated all the costs well before my observation.

We watched Tiger, Lee Westwood, Padraig Harrington, Luke Donald, Nicolas Colsaerts, Francesco Molinari, and Tom Watson. Tom has a very iffy looking putting stroke, and looks like he needs to be walking with a stick. He has bad back pains and bending down to the hole is a struggle for him. He put the youngsters to shame, however, with his 3 over par for two rounds.

Then we went in search of the Merchandise Tent. What a disappointment! For the last 8 years the R & A have franchised Adidas to supply the souvenir polo shirts. Their Clima-Cool brand is perfect for the hot weather in Spain. This year they replaced Adidas

Page 31: September magazine

page 312012 Remember when you call an advertiser tell them you saw their advert here

with Polo Ralph Lauren. The Ralph Loren souvenir polos were very poor quality and they were not selling well at £45 each. We’ve seen better quality on sale at Mazarron market. Mrs B found herself a fetching little blue sleeveless top and asked me to read the price for her. I put on my specs and read out the sticker price “£230! About the same cost as getting in here!” I said before walking away in disgust. My gob had just been severely smacked. The merchandise tent used to be a buzzing experience. It was the Ideal Homes Exhibition for golf. There would be club manufacturers offering their latest model clubs, shoes, putters, bags, trolleys, etc. There used to be golf tourist stalls for Spain, France, and Portugal. There were stalls for old golf books and golf paintings. All this has gone. What the R & A now offer is a small and poorly stocked supermarket arrangement staffed by G4S people offering a few golf tees, some low budget polo shirts and some ball markers – all overpriced.

The main taking point of the week, apart from the weather, was the long-handled putter. The R & A are considering banning them, maybe, sometime in the future, perhaps. . in 2016? They appear to offer a disproportionate advantage and players using them have won the last 3 Majors. So what! Why bother? What difference does it make? Joe Public isn’t going to threaten other scratch golfers just by picking up a long-handled putter. Adam Scott patently defended his use of one saying: “I do the swinging, I read the putts, I judge the pace, it’s not just down to the putter!” Those words came to haunt him as he bogeyed the last 4 holes. Ernie Els also uses one. Graeme McDowell told ESPN.com that Els’ putting was so bad last year, “You could have blindfolded Ernie, put a hockey stick in his hand, and he couldn’t have putted much worse. This is when he started with the belly putter, and it was that bad.”

It also looks like the R & A contributed to a low excitement final day by raising the cutting height of the lawnmowers by a few millimetres. They were worried about the forecast for a dry and windy final day. They worried about the balls being blown off the greens (remember Turnberry). By slowing down the greens, there was a lot of players leaving their putts a foot short. No one was able to hole putts (apart from Ernie Els and Nicolas Colsaerts). If Adam Scott had held his nerve, it would have been the most boring final round ever.

Next year it is back at Muirfield. This is

just up the road for us. Last time we got soaked. Tiger took an 81! I’m convinced that he is a fair weather golfer. We took our caravan and parked it right beside the course. Ernie won at Muirfield last time it was played there in 2002. This means he will be inundated with reporters asking him how it feels to be returning to the venue of his first Open win as the current Open Champion? For me, Nicolas Colsaerts is the one to watch, and never rule out a resurgent Tiger.

LATEST NEWS

The Backbeat 4 Beatles have had to pull out of the Beatles Tribute Evening on Tuesday 25th September at Mariano’s Bar and Restaurant, Camposol because of a serious illness in one of the band members’ families.

Fortunately, Los Amigos de Mazarron FC has managed to book a fantastic

replacement, the Liverpool Band, a group of Spanish musicians from the Costa Blanca. For the last 15 years the Liverpool Band has developed their act both musically and in their stage production, aiming for the closest likeness to the Beatles. With their excellent vocal harmonies they recreate the spirit and sound of the sixties and last year appeared live at the Cavern Club in Liverpool during the famous International Beatles weekend.

Tickets issued for the original show are valid and, at the time of going to press, there were still a few tickets remaining at €15 (including chicken and chips supper) or €10 without supper. To avoid disappointment contact Andy on 634 040 990, Dave on 626 465 847 as soon as possible, or you can email [email protected] or call at the Trevi Bar, Sector B Camposol any Thursday between 3 pm

and 4 pm.

Mazarron FC’s training for the new season has been going really well and a

number of friendly games have already taken place in readiness for the new season. Amongst several new players who have been introduced to the squad are former striker, Jose Ruben, another forward, Chules, and an excellent goalkeeper, Jose Iker. The new coach, Antonio Lorente has impressed everyone with his organizational skills and fitness regime and the players are looking fit and sharp. The season is scheduled to start in mid September but, at the time of writing, the Murcian Football Federation had not yet published the fixture list. Mazarron’s home games are normally played on Sundays with varying kick off times. Full details of all games, both home and away, are announced on the Tuesday before the weekend on which the game is to be played and advertised in the local media, on our website www.losamigosdemazarron.es and on posters at various points throughout Camposol and Mazarron.

The Estadio Municipal is undergoing a much needed facelift with the pitch looking lush and green and many new ground advertising boards springing up as part of a campaign to promote awareness of the Football Club and attract new sponsorship. HOW TO SPOT THOSE SNEAKY HIDDEN

CHARGES!!!Hidden charges – don’t they drive you mad?How can a return flight that starts off showing a price of, say, 48E have mysteriously increased to 148E by the time you come to put your payment details in? A garage that advertises “servicing from 50E plus IVA” magically produces a bill for 450 E when you go to collect the car – parts and labour were more than expected….apparently! What are you supposed to tell them to do – “unwork” and put the parts back on the shelf? And – I’m already ahead of you – what about financial services? Smoke and mirrors, I hear you say – Einstein couldn’t work out what you pay for financial advice. Not true, I am afraid – not if you use an Independent Financial Adviser who is regulated by the Financial Services Authority in the UK. He or she MUST tell you what you are going to be charged – but oh, how some advisers do their best to wriggle out of that! Often the “fee” is set artificially low for the time and research required to

produce the solution that is right for you. REASON? – because the adviser is hoping to take a big percentage chunk out of the investment he or she is proposing for you!! It’s amazing how many people will take life affecting advice from Bill at the Bowls Club or Gary at the Golf Club. Would you pick a heart or brain surgeon on the basis of a recommendation in the pub?As many readers will know, I have strong links with Expat Pension Providers Ltd, a business headed up by Angela South whom many of you have met, and who works both in Spain and the UK.Those links recently became stronger and I am pleased to say we have teamed up to share our office in Camposol Business Centre, where Shirley Fisher Legal &

CURRENCIES DIRECTLifestyle ChoiceIf you’re considering buying a property in Spain, you’re probably focused on the location and facilities of the property and its price rather than on how you’ll transfer the money to pay for the property. Many people don’t realise the impact the exchange rate can have on the sterling cost of the property. Registering with a specialised foreign exchange provider such as Currencies Direct gives you access to preferential rates, free transfers and access to live information on exchange rates. Many of our customers save around 3% of the value of the property by using our services rather than a high street bank. Currencies Direct has been established in Spain for more than a decade and we’ve helped thousands of people to save serious money on their property purchases. We have offices in four locations covering the key areas on the Spanish coastline where we find most Brits are likely to settle. Our head office is in London and we have other offices around the world to provide an exceptional service for our 200,000 private and business customers. Reducing Banking ChargesRecent surveys have shown that Spanish banks have some of the highest charges in Europe. Currencies Direct have entered a unique, national partnership with one of the largest banks in Spain, “la Caixa” to offer you fee-free banking on transfers and drafts. Once you’re registered with

Currencies Direct you can open a “la Caixa” Currencies Direct account with loads of money-saving benefits. When purchasing a property in Spain you usually have to pay the vendor with a banker’s draft. Many banks charge around 0.6% to raise one of these drafts (and as much as 1.25% when you deposit one)! If you’re purchasing a property for €300k you’ll be paying the bank €1800 just to raise the bankers’ draft! The arrangement that Currencies Direct have made with “la Caixa” means it will cost you nothing to deposit a banker’s draft and a maximum of 60€ to raise one.The other major advantage of the “la Caixa” Currencies Direct account is that there’s no charge when you make transfers to and from the UK and no cut-off time! As soon as we receive your funds they’ll appear in your account. the vet photos of the ´lump´ she too stated that the operation was urgent and that we could take her with only a 1,000€ deposit, still beyond our reach. Tina from Galgos Del Sol rang and told us about the Veterinarian Hospital in Alicante. A telephone call with them, now 11pm at night, and we were on our way to Alicante. The vet actually met us as we came off the motorway and escorted us to the hospital. After Mini was sedated we assessed the situation. The rectum needed to be cut off and the bowel re attached to the anus. Problem is that the area is obviously prone to infection and this may prove fatal. Next, the cause of the problem was the fact that she was disabled. Xrays showed that the damage to the back legs could not be repaired and that if the operation to the bowel was successful it may only last, a day, a week, a month, or a year. In the vets opinion it was kindest to have Mini put to sleep. What a decision to have to make at 2 o clock in the morning. But make it we did and Mini was put to sleep. The cost 509€. We paid this and spoke about the problems with money and the other hospital. They stated that they are for the animals and arrangements for a deferred payment could be made in the circumstances, everything is negotiable. AND they speak good English.

Why is it that we always seem to be busy? These hot days and nights and we are still running around still wouldn’t have it any other way! I would get bored sat on the beach all day, Ha Ha!!This moth started well, we decided to go to the Fuente Alamo horse fair. This was held over the first weekend in June. We found a small young donkey that was being mistreated. We managed to negotiate with the farmer and ´Henry´ came into our care. He is only small, brown in colour with a white face. He´s making a great little lad.Within a week or so we saw a poor girl near Fuente Alamo. We stopped to take a closer look and saw that she had overgrown hooves, her back was concaved through work, and we saw that her eye was damaged. We gave her food and water and we spoke about her on our facebook page. Within days we were contacted by the owner of the donkey who stated that he had no work, and that he could not afford food or the vet fees for her. He told us to

collect her the following evening,(when the heat of the day was over) as neither of us had a box to carry her and she would have to walk to our centre, luckily only 2 km away. The following

evening we walked her home. She was unsteady on her feet and it took an hour and fifteen minutes to get her to her new home. Whilst walking her we could tell that she was in fact blind in her bad eye. This has been confirmed by the vets, and an operation will be done in the near future. Her hooves have been trimmed and she is 100% better on her feet now but still not perfect. We named her Manuka.Through the discussions on facebook about ´Manuka´ we were told about a poor boy in Lorca. Photographs show that his hooves were tremendously overgrown. They looked like the slippers worn by Aladdin. I went to see him, and an argument took place between us about the condition of the donkey’s feet. The horses in the same corral were well cared for and their hooves were perfect. We left disgruntled with him as he wanted to sell us the boy for 500€. We reported back to our facebook followers and they raised the money to buy him. The following afternoon, unbeknown to him, we went to the farm. We were all shocked to see that the hooves had been chopped off, and the poor boy could not stand properly. He had the extended hooves for a number of years and when they were hacked off the poor lads balance was thrown. A vet was called and an argument ensued, the farmer him threatening our team. We eventually, 6 hours after our arrival, we got the donkey, Salvador´ into our loaned box and took him to the centre. The Farrier was called and he too was disgusted with the way that the hooves had been chopped. Salvador had two pain injections and his hooves were trimmed which although made walking even more difficult was a necessary evil. He has now spent the whole of one week stood and laid in a stall in the stable. He is on shavings and straw which is obviously a lot softer than the concrete floor. That was Friday and then on Saturday night, about 8pm we saw that our disabled pony Mini was laid in the paddock. Her intestine was protruding out of her anus about 3 inches. The vets were called and we were told that he needed an urgent operation, NOW. We called the Veterinarian hospital in Murcia, one that we have used before the vet on call stated that there is a deposit of 1,500€ to be paid as we walked through the door, before Mini would even be looked at. Have you ever tried to get 1,500€ cash at 8pm on a Saturday night. The charity does not have a card attached to the bank account, so it would be left to us to fund it, albeit temporarily, but we can only obtain 400€ from the cash machines. We sent

A blonde was trying to sell her old car, but she was having a lot of problems because the car had 250,000 miles on it. One day, she told her problem to a brunette that she worked with.

The brunette told her, “There is a way to make the car easier to sell, but it’s not legal.”

“That doesn’t matter to me,” replied the blonde. “I just want to be able to sell the car.”

...“Okay,” said the brunette. “Here is the address of a friend of mine. He owns a car repair shop. Tell him I sent you and he will turn the counter in your car back to 50,000 miles. Then it should not be a problem to sell your car anymore.”

The following weekend, the blonde made the trip to the mechanic.

About a month or so after that, the brunette asked the blonde, “Did you sell your car?”

“No,” replied the blonde. “Why should I? It only has 50,000 miles on it!”

I was walking through Liverpool today when I was stopped by a young kid outside the newsagents.

“Can you buy me some cigarettes please?” he asked.

“Sorry mate, no,” I replied.

“Come on,” he said, “They’re not for me, they’re for my dad.”

“Well, why can’t the lazy sod get them himself?” I asked.

“He’s not 18 until February,” came the reply.

I see the Aussies aren’t doing very well in the Olympics,

But then: if they could run, they wouldn’t have been Australians in the first place.

My mate asked me: “What is the shortest race in the Olympics?”

After thinking for a few minutes, I came up with an
