Currently at Kaleidoscope Coffee...AOPR's new Sept/October Members' Exhibition at KaleidoscopeCoffee was installed on Saturday, August 31st. Rita Gardner and herassistant curators Sharon Goods, Kenoli Oleari, and William Torphydid a masterful job with spectacular contributions from AOPR artists. Itmay be the best show that’s ever been presented at Kaleidoscope. Itdeserves careful, thoughtful, and lengthy attention and admiration.Something like pure synchronicity has occurred here. There is anamazingly wide variety of art that includes pastel, acrylic, ink print, calligraphy, zentangles, oil over cold wax, water color, digitalcomposition, monoprint, pastel and acrylic, conte crayon, and straightand manipulated photos that come together in perfect compliance, compatibility, and incredibly beautiful harmony. There is some stand outart here from artists who have extended there range and delivered someextraordinary work. Irene Hightower’s manipulated black and whitephoto image of an ethereal park landscape is mesmerizing. JohnWoodworth’s dark, moody, monolithic image of the Richmond SanRafael Bridge is an incredible study in light and form, the structure takeson the shape of a lacy intricate, golden assemblage against a forbidding,un-nerving background. Jackie Mucha has a new acrylic and pastelpiece in a graphic and geometric composition in subdued colors that’sstunning. And Denise Vejby’s piece, “Music and Forms” is a vibrant, lively and bright piece that captures fantasy of form and color and it’shighly polished and textured golden, graphic, composition evokes anintuitive, curious reaction; a response that demands that you feel andexamine the surface to determine how it’s been constructed. I stronglyurge everyone who reads this to go and spend time in Kaleidoscope. It’sa really beautiful show.

All AOPR members are encouraged to show up for the openingreception on Saturday, September 7 from 4 to 6 pm. The reception isan ALL MEMBER EVENT. It is an opportunity to meet other AOPRmembers and to support the AOPR members who organized and areexhibiting in the show.

Uelsman and Jack Welpot. His career took him into sales with the DuPont Corp, Olympus Camera, and Konica Camera before he arrived atIfshin Violins where he sells, appraises, writes about, and photographsviolins. Along the way he’s never lost his passion for photography. Hiswork reflects classic fine art photography in color and black and white. His most recent work is a portfolio of “small people” , a very entertainingstudy of miniaturized figures in incongruous environments. He won an“honorable mention” award at the Marin County fair this year for one ofthe pieces. Please take a few minutes to enjoy his marvelous exhibit. Itwill be on display until November 11th when the Exhibition Committeewill install the calligraphy of Nancy Noble.

Currently at El Sol Restaurant...The Linda Drake Gallery at El Sol Restaurant features the work of theAOPR Exhibition Committee. It continues until September 30th followedby El Sol's annual "Day of the Dead" exhibit. Photograph by Sharon Taylor-Ward

How did your interest in photography come about?I first started thinking about photography as a creative practice incollege. Several of my friends were serious writers and photographers- we hung out together, talked about our art, and worked on projectstogether. I started taking pictures of all kinds of things - from streetpictures in New York City to architectural details I thought would makecool images on paper. I also spent a summer working as an assistantphotographer on my home-town daily newspaper, where thephotography was full-speed and non-stop. I learned to think aboutscenic composition when taking pictures and how to act quickly to catch

the narrative moments of news events. I also learned basic darkroomtechniques of photo editing, and the impact that editing can have on thevisual expressiveness of the final prints. You specialize in iPhone-ography. What’s your philosophyregarding shooting images and post-processing?I began using a small digital “point-and-shoot” as my primary camera in2002 and switched to an iPhone in 2010. Now I always have my iPhonein my shirt pocket, and taking pictures is as easy - or difficult - as payingattention to what I see around me. Photography is a visual meditationfor me. I try to become “fully present” - open to where I am, and curiousabout what I might see. And I try to maintain this sensibility when I editand print, so that each photo will recreate my visual experience. You photograph what you see – but the result is often abstract andwhimsical. What are some of your favorite images?Thank you for noticing! I am particularly interested in things I see butdon’t understand - things that seem off-beat or out-of-place in theirsurroundings, beautiful things that are poignant. For example, sometimes I take pictures of odd bits I see as I walk around - a piece ofclothing, an old toy - and I wonder: Are these things lost or werethey discarded? I like to take pictures of abstract visual elements- the lines, shapes, colors, textures, and lightness/darkness - of what Isee. I also like images that incorporate fragments of text as visualelements - billboards layered with old posters, graffiti, signs withambiguous messages. I know you find subject matter all over Point Richmond. Think you’llrun out of ideas here?I don’t think it is possible to run out of ideas here - I certainlyhaven’t! The Point is a visually interesting village andenvironment. There is the natural and industrial terrain, a wide range ofplant and animal life, a diverse population of people, and a wide array ofstructures. And the visual landscape changes all the time, depending onthe light, the weather, and the season. There are endless opportunitiesfor new pictures in the Point. I think a bigger challenge might be to takethe same pictures twice! For more information, contact George at [email protected]

Interview by Rita Gardner, Communications Coordinator

AOPR FINANCESFinance Coordinator, Irene Hightower

One of my jobs as Finance Coordinator is to keep track of the materialsand equipment that belong to AOPR. These include small things like thetablecloths and napkins we use for AOPR potlucks and receptions as wellas big things like our banners, sandwich board signs, and canopies. Mostof these are stored at Bridge Storage. Every AOPR Coordinator needshelp and I am especially grateful for the help I receive from dedicatedvolunteers like Richard Melvin. For several years Richard hasvolunteered countless hours setting-up and taking down equipment forevents, putting out (and checking on) our sandwich board signs, andhelping with equipment inventory. I also want to thank AOPRmembers Bob Colin and John Woodworth who recently helped Richardand me clean and straighten the storage space. If you have time to helpme or any of the other Coordinators, please let me know. You can sendme an email at [email protected]

A few words...Communications Coordinator, Rita Gardner

For this newsletter I want piggy-back on to Bob Colin's AOPR Exhibitionsreport and say a special thank you to Sharon Goods, KenoliOleari, and Bob Colin for all the work that made the current Members’ExhibitIon at Kaleidoscope Coffee possible. Sharon reviewed/curatedthe images from 26 members who submitted photos of their artworks. Shespent many hours organizing and designing the layout of the show, including several visits to the venue to figure out best placement. Evenwith all that planning, flexibility was required at installation due to variouschallenges that emerged. Kenoli designed the poster, did the printing andworked hanging the art. Bob was an invaluable asset during the show’sinstallation on Saturday, August 31. From climbing up a 10’ ladder toinstall one large work of art (complete with electrical connectivity whichrequired MacGyver-like fixes), to helping some artists who had difficultygetting their works ready to hang, he responded with a smile and a ready

hand.

Which brings me to an urgent request: We need more of you to becomeinvolved. Right now, too few members are doing too much work on behalfof the artist members and the organization, and this is not sustainable. Many hands make light work, and we truly need more memberparticipation as volunteers – whether in the realm of communication, advertising and marketing for exhibits and other AOPR events, being partof the Exhibition Committee, or in areas of membership, activities andother. Please contact me, Rita Gardnerat [email protected] regarding communication opportunities, or BobColin at [email protected] to help with exhibitions. Thank you!
