We have been serving more than 200 people at lunch and dinner. Currently, there is no fruit on the shelves. First Christian Church will be having a Fruit Drive during the month of September. Please bring the large cans of fruit, or fresh fruit that has a shelf life (apples or oranges). If you have an abundance of produce in your garden, take it to the kitchen. They will use it immediately. We have been given an opportunity to take on another Friday morning. Talk to Sherry Baldwin if you can work or substitute either Friday morning or Friday afternoons. Lorraine Hipp is coordinating a Cookie Ministry. The staff at the CK prepare the meals, but dessert has to be donated from an outside source. Needless to say, some days they get dessert and some days they don’t. If you are interested in baking for the homeless, please call Lorraine at 423-886-5183 or 423-504-1346.

The Hyde OutThis time of year I begin to care too much about things I should not care so much about. I will yell at a TV screen in protest of young men and grown men playing a game. I will argue with friends about whose fantasy football team is better. I will be in a bad mood when Baylor loses to TCU (you can take the Baptist out of Baylor...). As much as I wish I didn’t care about football, for so many different reasons I find myself still caring about my teams, my schools, and as hard as it is to admit, even my fantasy football team.Growing up, my dad would often preach about how our passion was misplaced toward sports/movies/etc. He wished that the passion people have for a football team would bring them into church. Since I wish to keep fanatics as far away as possible, I am never preaching a sermon that asks for that. I think there is some-thing to glean from the masses connection to sports, teams, music, identity, etc. One of the human conditions that seems to attract attention to the “God of the Bible,” is our capacity to care for things. We are complex creatures who care greatly for things other than simply our basic needs. We care about stuff, teams, performers, ideas, and other people in our lives. We can care greatly for a lot of things. I find this capacity for care to be a good lesson in how God cares for humanity. If I have the capacity to care about a guy I’ve never met so that he helps my team win, imagine how much more God cares for God’s creation! I invite you to come to worship this Sunday as we dive into this idea a little more. I hope your week is full of light and love.Blessings, Jonathan Hyde

To our beloved First Christian Church family,Thanks so much for the sweet cards, nourishing meals, prayers, gifts & the many other kindnesses you have bestowed upon us the last 16 months. Thanks also for helping the funeral be so very beautiful & run smoothly. The boys are doing really well consid-ering & I think it’s because they feel so supported by our church & this community. They have a strong sense of who they are & where they belong.I am well aware of how blessed we are & much of that is thanks to our First Chris-tian Church family. We are very fortunate in this unfortunate situation.

Tears are rolling down my face as I write this message because I miss Dan so terribly, but I am so very appreciative of the silver lining of the dark cloud hanging over my head.Thank you for being a shining part of that silver lining. We love you & thanks for being #TeamDan since the late ‘80s when Phil & Aline moved to Chattanooga & joined this church. We are forever grateful. Scottie, Jack & Jake Summerlin

“I do my banking online. The only check I write is to the church.”“I’m always in a hurry on Sunday morning, and often forget my wallet.”“Sometimes when something like Hurricane Harvey happens, I want to give—right at that minute—to the ways our church is responding. How can I do that?”These are conversations about giving and tithing that we have here at FCC more often than one might expect. In response to this, our staff, treasurer, and finance chair have spent time looking at some options for online giving. We’ve ultimately decided to go with Givelify, an online platform that you can use via web page or smartphone app. Unlike many options, Givelify does not charge Churches a fee. It is free for us to offer as a giving option. It does, however, charge 2.9% + $0.30 per donation, which is well below what many online and app-based platforms charge for the ease of giving.

You are, of course, welcome to practice stewardship in the way that works best for you and your family. If you are most com-fortable writing a check, please continue to do so. This is simply an option for those who prefer to give electronically.Feel free to contact Brandon or Beth Harris, Financial Secretary, if you have any questions.
