IMPORTANT SMP VOLUNTEER NOTES: Thank you for your generous donation of time and support to our Community! SMP Volunteer Events are open to ALL Active Duty, Dependents, DoD, and their guests. LOA’s are typically available for all SMP Volunteers within 5 business days at the SMP Front Desk. Transportation provided to Active Duty, with priority given to single/unaccompanied Active Duty Service Members, unless otherwise specified. We update our website often with additional volunteer opportunities that are not on this calendar! Please also ensure to check our website for any changes in event details. If you are POV’ing for any volunteer events, please pick up an SMP POV Volunteer Log at the SMP Front Desk, available anytime! Please turn in your completed SMP POV Log to
the Front Desk within 14 days, so we can start processing your LOAs. LOAs will be processed once confirmed. Please dress for weather!
SEPTEMBER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Havelock High School Soccer Videography (starting on 9/3). POV only. Assist the Havelock High School Soccer Team as a videographer for home games! LOA’s and food will
be provided. A complete schedule is listed at https://www.maxpreps.com/high-schools/havelock-rams-(havelock,nc)/soccer/schedule.htm. For additional info and to register, please contact Skip Amaker, Havelock High School Head Soccer Coach at [email protected]. POV only. Please have a basic knowledge how to operate video equipment (provided). Show time is 15 minutes prior to each home game.
Multiple Sclerosis Society Bike Event Volunteering (9/5, 9/6, 9/7, and/or 9/8). POV only. Assist the MS Society with their Bike Benefit. Assist with set-up, distribution of snacks and water, event break down, and many other activities! Variety of times and activities available. Register with sign-up genius links below so you can choose your activity/time slot(s). POV only.

Craven County Law Enforcement Officers Association Shooting Range Beautification (9/7). Help with a variety of clean-up and beautification projects. Meet at the Roadhouse at 0700; will return around 1300. Breakfast and lunch included.
Havelock Youth Football (starting 9/7). POV only. Help out with the Havelock Youth Football Games with chain movement, play counts, debris pick up, and concession assistance! Games start tentatively on 9/7 at Tucker Creek Middle School., and will be on Saturdays from 0800 to 1600. To register or for additional info, please contact Laurie Schaalma at [email protected].
Community Garden Master Program Rose Garden Beautification Project! (9/9). Assist with a variety of outdoor gardening projects! Lunch will be included. Please meet at the Roadhouse at 0800.
Habitat for Humanity (9/10, 9/17, and 9/24). Assist with Habitat’s two newest builds in New Bern. Meet at the Roadhouse at 0630; will return around 1215. Please wear closed toed shoes, and weather appropriate civilian attire.
Embrace Recovery Rally (9/14). POV only. Assist the Community Collaborative for Craven County Children with the Annual Embrace Recovery Rally. Meet at Union Point Park in New Bern at 1300. Event will conclude at 1900. POC is Amber Tabarrini.
Veteran’s Organic Garden Volunteering in New Bern (9/11, 9/18, and 9/25). We will be assisting the Veterans Employment Base Camp and Organic Gardens with a variety of construction and planting projects! Meet at the Roadhouse at 0815. Will return around 1230.
New Bern Police Department Badge, Faith, and Community Fun Day (9/20 and 9/21). Help out with our local Police Department with set-up and tear-down! o Friday, 9/20: Set-up! Please meet at the Roadhouse at 1145; will return around 1730. o Saturday, 9/21: Tear-down! Please meet at the Roadhouse at 1330; will return around 1730.
Autocross (9/21 and 9/22). Assist with set-up, tear down, course operations, event monitoring (and you will get to ride with SCCA instructors). Please meet at the Roadhouse on September 21 (0645-1630) and/or September 22 (0645-1630). (Autocross will take place on Foxtrot Taxiway, off Access Road).
Ft Macon State Park Special Projects (9/27). Assist with cleaning up Ft. Macon Beach and Trails and other special projects! Meet at the Roadhouse at 0800; will return around 1500. Please bring sunscreen, closed toed shoes, hat, bagged lunch (or $ for lunch), and water source.
Croatan National Forest Volunteering (9/28). Assist the Forestry Service with a variety of outdoor projects in support of the Croatan National Forest. Meet at the Roadhouse at 0800; will return around 1630. Please wear closed toed shoes/boots and weather appropriate civilian attire.
Animal Shelter (every Saturday). Volunteer at the Carteret County Animal Rescue. Assist with walking the dogs, meeting with potential adopters, special projects, and cleaning. Meet at the Roadhouse at 0700.
Volunteer with Riverpoint Nursing Home (every Wednesday). Volunteer with our seniors! Attire is proper civilian attire. Meet at the Roadhouse at 1700. Will return around 2000. Please check our website for dates that are POV only.
Tryon Palace Gardening (every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Advanced registration required). POV only. Volunteer in a variety of projects to include pruning, planting, raking, mulching, watering, weeding, fence repair, and trellis work. They are also looking for Master Gardeners, Horticulturists, Garden Enthusiasts, General Yard Workers, and Carpenters to work in the Tryon Palace Historic Gardens. Volunteers are requested during the hours of 8:00 am – 11:30 am, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday each week. Contact Hadley Cheris at 252-639-3560 or [email protected] at least 24 hours in advance to sign up. Please wear proper outdoor working attire, and bring gloves, sunscreen, hat, insect repellent, and water.
Havelock Boys and Girls Club (M – F). POV only. Volunteer with our local Boys and Girls Club! Assist with mentoring, tutoring, homework, coaching, and activities! Please contact the Boys and Girls Club at 252-444-5437 for additional details. A one-time $10 background check is required.
WWII Museum Restoration (on-going M—S; works around your schedule). Love cool history? Want to help save our WWII history?!! Learn how to restore some of the coolest artifacts and VEHICLES from WWII at the Newport WWII Museum. POV only; please contact Frank at [email protected] to set up a time to volunteer!

UPCOMING SPECIAL EVENTS: Salsa Party! (9/12). Enjoy a night of free amazing food, free beverages tastings, Salsa dancing, games, and much more at the Roadhouse! Beverage tastings start at 1830; food
is at 1900. Classic Rock Pictionary with 106.5 WSFL Radio! (9/20). Join Cindy Miller from 106.5 WSFL Radio for Classic Rock Pictionary at the Roadhouse! Kicks off at 1700 and goes until
1900. Great prizes awarded! All authorized Patrons are encouraged to attend! Autocross (9/21 and/or 9/22). Pre-registration required online at www.motorsportreg.com by 2359 on 9/15. Authorized patrons can also register day of, with a $10 late fee.

SMP Council Meeting (9/26) at 1430 at the Roadhouse). ALL ARE WELCOME!!! SMP is YOUR program, so come fill us in on your recreation ideas, volunteering ideas, and QOL concerns.
Rocktoberfest! (10/17). 1700 to 2200 across from the Roadhouse! FREE! Enjoy free German food, beverage tastings, activities, and live performances by Candlebox, Adelitas Way, and DJ Big Mike! Participate in the Stein Hoisting Competition, Hammer-Schlagen, and much more! Please see info below for the Unit Stein Race Obstacle Course Competition. Free event for all authorized patrons. Event kicks off at 1700 across from the Roadhouse!
Rocktoberfest Unit Stein Race Obstacle Course Competition! Active duty units only! Teams of 5 and may include 1 spouse. Each unit may have up to 3 teams. Register with your DRC. Prizes deposited into unit fundraising accounts (1st place = $1000, 2nd place = $750, 3rd place = $500, 4th place = $250, best costume = $100).
Bible Discussion Group! Every Tuesday at 1900 in the Roadhouse reading room. Fridays! Karaoke!! Starts at 1900!
SEPTEMBER AND OTHER UPCOMING TRIPS: SMP Half Day Pier Fishing Trip (9/14). Embark on a half-day fishing trip to Bogue Inlet Pier! Meet at the Roadhouse at 1500; will return by 2200. Space is limited to 13
registrants. Fishing poles, bait and tackle provided if needed (free)! Cost is $12.50 to fish required at pier for 24 hour fishing pass. First registered/first served. For more info, please call the SMP Front Desk at 252-466-3027.
Military Fun Day at the Cape (9/20)! Support our Military Fun Day at the Cape! Spend the day at Cape Lookout National Seashore, tour the lighthouse, bring fishing gear (if you like), great door prizes, and enjoy the BEST home-cooked food (lunch and breakfast provided). Meet at the Station Theatre Parking Lot at 0730; will return around 1600. ADVANCE SIGN UP ON SMP WEBSITE REQUIRED, WHILE SPACE IS AVAILABLE. (This event fills up quickly!) Transportation provided or you can POV.
US National Whitewater Center Overnight Trip (9/28 through 9/29) $185/pp. Enjoy over 1,300 acres of activities including whitewater adventure rafting, kayaking (whitewater and flat water), paddle boarding, rock climbing, zip lining, ropes courses, jumps, mountain biking, hiking, yoga, restaurants, shopping, and live music! Trip price ($185/pp based on double occupancy) includes activity pass, lodging, and transportation. Deadline to register at Crystal Coast Travel and Leisure is 1300 on 20 September. (252-466-2197).
Busch Gardens Howl-O-Scream Trip (10/26) $15/pp. Enjoy Busch Gardens Theme Park with SMP during Howl-O-Scream!! In addition to the amazing rides, attractions, and food, enjoy hauntingly delightful haunted houses, scare zones, escape rooms, live shows, and more! Trip price includes transportation. If you’ve already used your free Waves of Honor Busch Garden’s pass this calendar year, you can purchase a ticket at Crystal Coast Travel and Leisure.
