An average of seven Americans dieeach week as a result of house fires. Mostfires occur in residential buildingsbetween the hours of 11 p.m. and 7a.m., when occupants are most likely tobe asleep.
Here’s five things you can do toincrease your chance of survival in a fire:
• Install smoke alarms on every storyof your home and outside sleeping areas.Be sure to test them monthly, cleanthem every six months and replace bat-teries in spring and fall.
• Have a fire escape plan for yourfamily and practice it. A small fire canspread rapidly — you may only haveminutes or seconds to escape. Whengoing over the details of your escapeplan, check windows and doors to ensureall open easily. Know your local emer-gency number (911). Never stop to gath-er belongings or reenter a home aftersafely outside.
• When renovating, consider usingfire-rated, noncombustible products.Your choice of insulation, for example, can be vital. Stone wool insulation, likethat produced by Roxul, resists tempera-tures up to approximately 2,150 F. Whendirectly exposed to fire, it will not off-gas, contribute to toxic smoke or pro-mote flames.
• Purchase a multi-use fire ladder foreach bedroom in your home and practiceusing it.
• Place fire extinguishers on everylevel of your home, especially in high-risk areas like the kitchen, near fire-places and in the garage. Use only forsmall, contained fires that are notspreading rapidly. Know how to operateyour extinguisher before an emergencyoccurs using the PASS method: Pull pin,Aim low, Squeeze lever and Sweep fromside to side. The safest option is alwaysto evacuate your home and call for help.
