This coming week, people around theworld will pause to reflect on the tragicevents of September 11th, 2001. 9/11changed the course of history and with it,all of our lives. For more than a decade, ourNation’s forces have continued to fightagainst terrorists – and against all thosewho intend our Nation harm. We have allmade sacrifices and endured hardship overthe years, and many of us – too many of us– have lost friends or family along the way. This year, our chiefs and chief (selects) willlead a ceremony to honor all those lost du-ring the tragic events of 9/11, and thosewho continue to serve, to ensure suchevents are never, ever repeated. I encourageall of you to come out and take part in thisremembrance ceremony. The ceremonywill be held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sep-tember 11th at the Midtown complex. Notlong after, our talented chapel musicianswill perform a remembrance concert at thechapel for the community, beginning at5:30 p.m. Both events are sure to inspire.

On a lighter note, the 2012-13 sportsseason will “kick off ” this weekend! I wantto invite the entire Sigonella community toget involved and support our schools asthey begin their seasons. The first event of

the season involves our own Jaguar footballteam taking on Rota – the team that endedthe Jags season last year with 7 onside kicksand a few injuries – on Saturday at 9 a.m. atthe Annex Field at NAS I. Revenge – ab-sent the injuries, of course – will be sweet!!On Sunday, the Sigonella Swordfish willwelcome Naples Tigersharks to our poolbeginning at 8:30 a.m. Please come out andshow your support for our youth sportsprograms.

After the rain over Labor Day weekend,I don’t have to remind you all that rainy sea-son is approaching and that can make dri-ving here in Sicily an even greaterchallenge. Please take some time to makesure that your vehicles are in condition tohandle the Fall and Winter road conditionshere, and that you have an emergency kittucked away in the car…just in case youoverestimate the reliability of your islandbeater or in case of an emergency. You cannever be too prepared!

Lastly, I want to thank our Voting Assi-stance Officers for the work they have beenputting in to ensure that the Sigonella com-munity is well-informed and afforded theopportunity and resources to cast their voteas we approach this year’s election cycle. If

you haven't registered to vote, or you haveregistered but you haven't requested yourabsentee ballot, NOW is the time to do so.Visit www.FVAP.gov and click on "GetStarted" for your respective category. Thewebsite will guide you through the rest ofthe process. Voting is a right that each of usdefends and I encourage everyone to regi-ster and exercise their right to vote!

Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station(NCTS) Sigonella Commanding Officer Commander Jef-frey Buss took part in the September 3 wreath laying me-morial ceremony, hosted by Associazione Kakiparis. Theceremony was in remembrance of the World War II Cas-sibile Armistice that was signed on September 3, 1943 byItalian General Giuseppe Castellano of the Axis powersand American General Walter Bedell Smith for the Allies. The armistice, which was not disclosed until September8, marked the unconditional surrender of Italy after theAllied troops' landing in Sicily as part of Operation Husky.

Siracusa Deputy Mayor Concetto La Bianca presen-ted Buss with a participation award to thank the Navy forhaving sent a delegation to the memorial ceremony whichwas first held in 2000.

"We are honored to host once again a delegation re-presenting the young and brave American soldiers wholiberated Sicily in 1943," said La Bianca.

It was an event Buss was more than happy to attend."It is very important that people remember the events

and the great sacrifices that were made here 69 years ago,"said Buss.

Problems with mold? Just what is mold and how can itaffect you? Mildew and molds are fungi - simple microscopicorganisms that thrive anywhere there is a moist environment.Molds are a necessary part of the environment. Withoutthem, leaves would not decay and aspects of soil enrichmentcould not take place. It is their ability to destroy organic ma-terials, however, that makes mold a problem for people - inour homes and in our bodies. When exposure is great, someindividuals, particularly those with allergies and asthma, canexperience illness that could be mild to serious or anywherein between. It can also cause flu-like symptoms, fever, fatigue, respiratory dysfunction, frequent and excessive nose bleeds, dizziness, headaches, diarrhea, vomiting, and liver damage.

How can you identify mold? Mold may look cottony, velvety, rough or leathery and have different colors likewhite, gray, brown, black, yellow or green and may developwithin 24-48 hours of water exposure. Even worse, it willcontinue to grow until steps are taken to eliminate thesource of moisture, and effectively deal with the mold pro-blem. Mildew (mold in early stage) and molds grow onwood products, ceiling tiles, cardboard, wallpaper, carpets, drywall, fabric, plants, foods, insulation, decaying leaves andother organic materials.

How can you prevent mold? Controlling moisture is thekey to stopping indoor mold growth and subsequent da-mage to property. Use of air conditioning and a dehumidi-fier during warm, humid weather while keeping thewindows closed can also help. Just make sure that it has ahose in order for the water to drain away continuously. Alsowipe down shower walls after bathing or use shower clea-ning products to help prevent molds in showers and tubs.

How do you know if mold is active or dormant? If youbrush a mold spore and it smears, it is active. If it is powderyand dry, it is inactive. Freezing, air drying and exposure toUV light are all methods that will inactivate mold. Once itis inactive, you need to either vacuum it up or wipe it off.Do not vacuum indoors unless you have a HEPA filter(HEPA is a type of filter that can trap a large amount of verysmall particles that other vacuum cleaners would simply re-circulate back into the air of your home thereby spreadingthe spores). You can also use chemicals to kill mold sporessuch as a solution of bleach or mold/mildew cleaning solu-tion on all surfaces that have come into contact with it. Inac-tive mold spores can spread to any item by direct contactand re-infect under the right conditions.

As a resident, it is your responsibility to clean up moi-sture and spills to prevent mold or report them as soon asyou become aware of them. Here are some of the warningsigns to help you identify mold:

■ Recent flooding from inside (plumbing problemssuch as sink, tubs and toilets) or outside (storm water etc.)

■ Water leaks in floors, walls or ceilings■ Broken water pipes■ Wet or damp carpets■ Poor ventilation in kitchens and bathroomsContact your UH Building Manager or Marinai Inspec-

tor if the contaminated area is over 3’ x 3’ square and youcannot handle the job yourself or if you have any questionson how to eliminate it. They will be more than willing to as-sist you.

Remember, stop mold before it starts by cleaning upwater spills and leaks immediately!

Feast of Madonna di Ognina in Catania, September 7-9

The maritime procession of the statue of the Virgin Mary of Ognina is one of the most touching moments of the festival, which is hosted annually by the Ognina fishermen’s neighborhood in Catania on September 8. (Photo by www.criluge.it)

Each year, the fishermen ofOgnina demonstrate their devotionto the Virgin Mary with the Feast ofMadonna di Ognina. This year, festi-vities begin on Friday, September 7with a fried fish feast and concludeson Sunday, September 9.

History of the Feast of Ma-donna di Ognina

The origin of the festival datesback to the 19th century. A statuedepicting the Virgin Mary was pla-ced on a wooden carriage and para-ded through the few streets of theOgnina district.

On September 12, 1889, a fireoccurred after the festival. The devo-tees left the candles lit on the woo-den carriage setting both thecarriage and the statue on fire. A newstatue was needed to replace the da-maged one. While this new statuewas being carved in Paris, a wax scul-pture depicting the child VirginMary, named “bammina” (femalechild) was temporary displayed inthe sanctuary. The new statue, car-ved by a French monk, replaced theoriginal in 1889.

Originally, the financial supportto organize the festival was providedby the residents of the area. Moneywas collected and put into a money-box named “Caruseddi.” Those mo-neyboxes werebroken during a shortceremony held on the Friday prece-ding the main festival. Today, in leuiof collected donations, each fisher-man allocates half of his weekly in-come, called “menza parti” tosupport the organization of the festi-val.

History of the Ognina San-ctuary

The sanctuary that hosts the pre-cious statue was built in 1392, al-though historic chronicles state thatthe named “Santa Maria di Lognina”was already paying tributes to theVatican in 1308. In 1676, historianGiovanni Andrea Massa wrote thatpilgrims from all over the worldcame to the Ognina Sanctuary tothank the Virgin Mary for the graces(healing or other miracles) she hadgranted them. After a terrible ear-thquake in 1693, the church was re-built in a new location facing north.

The church consists of three naves. In the 17th century, Giacomo Vi-gnerio, a Raphael student, paintedits interior.

Devotion to the Virgin MaryOne of the famous stories pas-

sed down through generations tellsof a miracle that saved the gulf ofOgnina. According to legend, onMarch 26, 1933, a violent sea stormthreatened the gulf, destroying partsof the pier and damaging boats. Itbrought waves more than 40 feettall. Gripped by panic, local fisher-men turned to the Virgin Mary forhelp. They moved the statue of theMadonna from the alter of theOgnina Sanctuary and placed it onthe church’s square. Miraculously, the sea calmed down just hours later.

Today, as in decades past, fisher-men trade a special greeting amongeach other as a tribute to both Jesusand the Virgin Mary. When twoboats cross paths during night fi-shing, a crew leader says “VirginMary!” and the other replies “Jesus.”Then, they exchange information onthe outcome of the fishing.

(ANSA) - Rome - Italy's Ministry of Agriculture isasking the European Commission in Brussels to betterregulate source information on the labels of bottles ofolive oil. Italy wants to be sure that operators are com-plying with EU labeling rules that require informationregarding the origin of the oil be clearly stated and easyto understand. "Olive oil is a symbol of the Italian agro-products... (and) Italian growers understandably re-quire recognition for the quality of their product, which is not always renumerated by the market," saidItalian Agriculture Minister Mario Catania. Italian pro-ducers struggle to be properly paid for the quality pro-ducts, and therefore labeling that clearly distinguishesgreat oil from poor imposters is very important, saidthe minister. The European Commission has been de-liberating the issue of labeling.

(Inhabitat.com) Modena - Ferrari, the sports carlegend, has recently opened up a new Museum in Mo-dena, Italy. Working together with Future Systems andShiro Studio, Ferrari designed a museum dedicated tothe man, Enzo Ferrari. The building stands on a sustai-nable partial bermed construction and is powered bygeothermal energy. (Over 50% of the main exhibitionbuilding is set below ground level) It maintains tem-perature whether it’s cool or warm outside. The win-dows have thermo sensors, which get activated duringsummer to allow for cool air to circulate, increase

energy efficiency and decrease energy use. The mu-seum building also sports photovoltaic technology andwater recycling systems. The bright yellow exteriors arecoupled with modern white interiors, giving it a plushfuturistic look. The building’s ceiling is made up oftranslucent materials, thereby letting the natural lightinside. The curves of the building represent those ofthe stylish curves of Ferrari cars.

(Italy Magazine) Naples -After closing in the nine-ties for renovations, Naples' Filangieri Museum, foun-ded in 1888 to hold the personal collection of GaetanoFilangieri, has finally reopened to visitors. The mu-seum is best known for its setting: the 15th-centuryPalazzo Como, inspired by the Florentine Renaissancearchitectural style. Inside, like the insignia on a modernbaseball cap or Fendi wallet, the symbol, a nested 'G'and 'F' (Gaetano Filangieri's initials), is stenciled at re-gular intervals along the walls in contrasting red andblue, evidence of the extensive work done on the buil-ding to honor Gaetano's memory and collection.Prince Filangieri of Arianiello was a lawyer, scholar andphilosopher with a great interest in ancient antiquities. His personal art collection includes not only fine art,but a vast array of weapons, china, miniatures and pre-cious materials such as ivory, ancient glass, and coral.Though the collection was damaged and looted duringWorld War II, other private collectors donated theirpieces to round out the remaining collection, includingDomenico de Luca Montalto's Villa Livia liberty-stylecomplex, complete with all period furnishings and artintact, which is also part of the museum. MILLINGTON, Tenn. (NNS)-- Navy Personnel Command is ac-cepting senior enlisted leadership'sapplications to serve on Fiscal Year2014 active-duty and Reserve E-9,E-8 and E-7 selection boards, offi-cials said Aug 31.

Master chiefs should not consi-der their career complete until theyhave participated as a member ofan enlisted selection board, accor-ding Navy Personnel Command(NPC) Force Master Chief(AW/SW/NAC) Jon Port. "Parti-cipation by senior leaders in selec-tion boards is paramount to theNavy's future. It is our responsibi-lity to sit a selection board tochoose those most qualified to re-lieve us."

According to the message, ac-tive and Reserve component ma-ster chiefs are encouraged to applyto serve on a board. Frocked ma-ster chiefs may also participate inthe selection board process. Thereare no restrictions on active-dutyserving on Reserve boards or Re-serve/full-time support serving onactive boards.

Senior chief petty officers mayalso serve on the active or Reserve

E-7 boards as either members orrecorders. They may only serve asrecorders on the E-9 or E-8 boards.Chief petty officers may serve as re-corders on E-9, E-8 and E-7 selec-tion boards. Applicants should notdiscuss their application with anymembers from their command, other than those required to reviewtheir application.

Board dates, application proce-dures and guidance are available inNAVADMIN 264/12. Applicationdeadlines vary based on the diffe-rent board convening dates, seemessage for further guidance.

Preserving the integrity of theselection board process before, du-ring and after a board is vital to thereliability of the board, accordingto Port. It is important that pro-spective candidates submit theirapplication on their own behalf.Forwarding via administrative per-sonnel will compromise boardmembership and could invalidatetheir application. Applicationsshould be submitted only by themember applying, their command,Fleet or Force master chief. Partici-pation on a future board shouldnot be discussed with fellow mem-

bers while serving on an earlierboard.

Potential board members arecharged with preserving board in-formation the moment they are of-ficially notified by NPC that theyhave been chosen to sit on a pro-motion selection board.

For rules of engagement, visitwww.npc.navy.mil/boards/selec-tionboardsupport.

Prior to submitting an applica-tion, applicants should review BU-PERSINST 1401.5A, thesupplemental guidance for U.S. Navyselection boards.

Complete application procedu-res, eligibility requirements andlinks to other resources can befound in NAVADMIN 264/12,available on the NPC website atwww.npc.navy.mil or contact theNPC customer service center [email protected] or 1-866-U-ASK-NPC.
