The name of the groom was misspelled in the announcement of the engagement of Melissa Kay McCarty and Chace Tyler Jewell in the Sept. 21 issue of the Newsgram. Parents of the bride-to-be are Dr. and Mrs. Michael McCarty of

By Roger McKenzieDan Pulis of Cargill started off

Monday night’s meeting of the Freedom Board of Education on a bright note with the presentation of a check for $13,000 to the school district for the new greenhouse. Ag teacher Bryan Weber applied for the grant and was all smiles when he accepted the check on behalf of Freedom Public School.

A happy, but sad occasion took

place prior to the meeting when citizens gathered in the school cafeteria for a retirement party for third grade teacher Luann Boham and encumbrance/payroll/board secretary Mardonna Brady. A large crowd gathered to wish both well and remember their contributions to the school system.

Once the school board meeting got underway, the board members received the good news that the school district is

in good financial shape. Superintendent Richard Gleave noted that Buddy Carroll, who performed the district’s 2011-12 Estimate of Needs, felt good enough about it to not stay for its presentation. He did attend the retirement party.

Gleave presented Carroll’s report. It listed a carryover of $626,200.40. Not included in that amount was an additional $150,000 that was also carried over but held in a special account to be used when a settlement is reached with Advanced Academics, the company the district contracted with two years ago when the district was the home school for a number of virtual students.

This year’s estimate of needs totaled $1,672,599.43. That is about $100,000 more than a year ago. Estimate of needs is equivalent to about 90 percent of the district’s estimated revenues, which means revenues are up.

The Building Fund started the year with $74,114.76, about the same as a year ago. The estimate of needs for the Building Fund is $148,138.98, down from about $160,000 last year.

Lower this year by about $9,000 is the estimate of needs for the Child Nutrition Fund. Supt. Gleave said

CARGILL CHECK PRESENTATION -- Cargill’s Dan Pulis presented the Free-dom School Board a check for $13,000 Monday night. The check will be used to build a greenhouse for use by the agriculture students. Ag teacher Bryant Web-ber accepted the check on behalf of the district. Pictured at the presentation are, from the left, FISD board chairman Joe Jessup, board member Donna Hodgson, Supt. Gleave, Weber, Pulis, board member Eric Smith, and board member Jan Eden. Baker), Muriel (Addie Allen), and Alice (Molley Vap) on their hip journey to bring together the Music, Beads, and Flowers Celebration.

They call upon the popular singing group, The Lemon Bugs (Garrett Butler, Dawna Morawitz, and Brandon Gos-selin), who love the idea. When the message goes out that the Bugs will donate their talent, crazily-painted busses start arriving at the site of the festival bringing wanna-be hippies (Hana Newman and Victoria Loeser).

Everything is cool until Mrs. Porter (Mia Botta), who hates “The Love Generation” demands that the local sher-iff (Joshua Stewart) shut down the happening. To make matters worse, two music promoters (Lane Newlin and Tiffany Rieger) offer the Lemon Bugs a deal they can’t refuse if they skip the celebration.

The press (Katelyn Garvie) arrives to cover the event. Other exciting members of the group include Hippie Girl with Flute (Taylor Mattson), Beads (Kelli Spade) and Millie (Rocki Long), Tony (Chance Czerniak), Swash-buckler (Tyler Flackman), Misty Dawn (Jessica Ferrell), the owner of the farm (Chris Guffy), and a nurse (Hannah King).

In the end, all comes together, of course, and the Mu-sic, Beads, and Flowers Celebration rocks on with great sixties-style songs. So, hop on a bus and join the celebra-tion.

The play will be presented at 7 p.m. Monday October 3, at the Burlington High School Auditorium. The Junior Class will be hosting a taco pile on at 5:00pm-6:30 pm in the little gym.

By Lynn L. MartinWe speculated around the office this would happen. A couple

of weeks ago, our Sunday paper carried a front page story about Arden Chaffee being named “Mayor of the Year” by a state organization. Also in the same issue was a story about a “Barroom Brawl.”

In the layout process, the two stories were placed side by side at the top of the page. The Mayor’s story had a slightly bolder and larg-er headline while the Barroom story had a somewhat smaller headline and in italic style.

In general, our layout people are trained to place a photo as a right or left boundary

of a major headline. Or, if that isn’t possible, to place a “box” around the second story or maybe a gray tint-screen underneath the type to clearly separate them.

I personally do not care very much for the tint-screen under-neath the story because it reduces contrast and makes the type harder to read. I have found the older I get and as my eyes dete-riorate, I hate any “artsy” typesetting in ads or news content that makes things harder to read.

A fourth technique to separate stories that abut each other is to choose significantly different headline type styles to clearly separate them. Well, that’s where we failed. The headline differ-ence wasn’t quite dramatic enough.

Marione and I, with the help of two or three employees, han-dle the press work in our pressroom. None of us noticed the po-tential humor in the headlines of this particular issue as it came off the press. However, the next day a reader called and pointed it out and that’s when we laughed and said, “I wouldn’t be sur-prised if this makes Jay Leno or the Oklahoma Press Association Blooper of the Year slide show.”

I forget the name of the famous pundit who said something like, “I’d rather they say something good about me; but if they

In honor of the 60th Anniversary of the Miss Cinderella Talent Show and Pageant at Northwestern Oklahoma State Univer-sity, four former Cinderella winners and a former pageant director are coming back to campus to judge this year’s event.

Judges are: Jane Jayroe, Miss Cinder-ella 1963; Annie (Arganbright) Milleret, Miss Cinderella 1967; Lucia (Miller) O’Connor, Miss Cinderella 1972; Cassie (McEachern) Walden, Miss Cinderella 1999; and Dr. Yvonne Carmichael, direc-tor for 22 years, have committed to judg-ing the Miss Cinderella Talent Show on Thursday, Sept. 29, at 7:30 p.m., and the Pageant on Friday, Sept. 30, at 8 p.m.

Both events will take place in Herod Hall Auditorium.

Jayroe began her pageant journey as Miss Laverne before her Miss Cinderella crowning in 1963. After Northwest-ern’s Pageant, Jayroe was crowned Miss Oklahoma in 1966 and Miss America in

1967. She is married to Gerald Gamble

Previous Miss Cinderellas, past director to judge pageantTalent competition Thursday, Pageant Friday

and has one married son and two grand-children.

Milleret was crowned Miss Cin-derella in 1967. Milleret was Miss Alva in 1967 and at-tended Northwestern for two years before attending Semester at Sea at Chapman College in California.

She was Northwestern’s entry in Top Ten Coed Contest for Glamour Magazine in 1968. After returning to Oklahoma, she graduated from the University of Okla-homa in 1972.

O’Connor gradu-ated from Buffalo High School and held the titles Miss Buf-falo, Miss Wheat-heart of the Nation, Miss Cinderella and Miss Queen of the West before attend-ing Oklahoma State

University. In 1976 she was named Miss Oklahoma and competed in the Miss America Pageant that year.

A few years af-ter being crowned as Miss Cinderella in 1999, Walden was crowned Miss Northwestern 2002 and Ranger Queen 2003. A year later, she graduated from Northwestern with a

Bachelor of Science degree in business administration. Walden resides in Okla-

homa City, with husband Tyler Walden, a 2004 graduate, and daughter, Reese, who’s 1.

Carmichael was involved with Miss Cinderella for 27 years and served as its director for 22 years. She is a retired Northwestern pro-fessor emeritus. She also directed the Miss Northwestern Pag-

eant for 10 years. Carmichael sponsored and co-directed the Aquarina Synchro-nized Swimming Club for 35 years and was a sports coordinator for synchronized swimming in the 1989 Olympic Festival.

Savannah White, Miss Cinderella 2002 and Miss North-western 2005, will perform during the pageant on Friday. Currently, she lives in New York City and is pursuing a career in performing. She has

been in small cabaret shows, studying op-era and currently is writing a two-woman sketch comedy show. White has had the opportunity to model for DEX makeup company, as well as teach classes and just had the pleasure of being a makeup artist for New York’s fashion week. She is the daughter of Mickey and Donna White of Alva.

“The Miss Cinderella pageant is such an amazing part of Alva’s history and has greatly inspired the lives of many girls,” White said.

By Helen BarrettThe third annual Memory Walk to

remember children whose lives ended too quickly, will be held at the Cherokee High School Football Field on Oct. 8. Registration begins at 10 a.m. with the walk beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Registration is free. Anyone of any age who experienced the loss of a child is invited to come participate.

Guest speaker for this year will be Kerri Zeka from Broken Arrow, Okla. Zeka lost her 4-year-old daughter to cancer in 2010.

Cherokee’s Peggy Collins started the walk after her daughter Kristie and husband Jason Shirley lost their daughter on July 28, 2009.

“Kristie was in her eighth month,” Collins said. “There was absolutely nothing wrong the entire pregnancy. Kristie had a routine visit on the 27th. That morning at about 6:30 Miranda had the hiccups. By the time Kristie was at the doctor’s office at 11:30 they couldn’t

‘Remembering our Children Walk’ planned at CherokeeOctober 8 at football field find the heartbeat.”

The doctor induced labor and Miranda was delivered the next day with a knot in her umbilical cord.

“Kristie found out that there was to be a memorial walk – the Orange County Walk to Remember- there where she lives in Anaheim, Calif. in October,” Collins said.

She began thinking that a similar walk should be held locally.

“And so, Remembering Our Children was launched,” Collins said.

At the first walk, the names of 33 children were honored. After the walk, Collins was told by one of the walkers that when she lost her child 50 years earlier, it was considered an inappropriate topic of conversation. Parents didn’t talk about their loss, they just moved.

“She was very thankful for our walk,” Collins said.

The purpose of the Memory Walk is to support these families, showing them that they are not alone. Collins said no matter how old a person’s child was,

when or how they were lost, they will be remembered at this walk.

“I make care baskets and take to the Enid hospitals for them to give to grieving families,” Collins said. “Some of the items they contain are a cuddly stuffed animal (so that mom doesn’t have to go home with empty arms), a soft blanket, a heart shaped pendant with the baby’s footprint on it, and information to help them heal and grieve.”

During the last year, seven of the pendants have been delivered.

“If you or someone you know has lost a child from miscarriage, stillbirth, illness or accident, please come and walk with us as we remember,” Collins said.

Everyone is invited to come show their support for the families whether or not they lost a child.

“I also want them to know that God is there…always,” Collins said. “We may never understand why our child was taken, but God is in control and we have to trust Him. It doesn’t mean we can’t ask ‘why’.”

program for cheerleaders, and the soon to start basketball season which gets underway on Oct. 1.

Two Freedom students were honored by Chesapeake Energy with “Discovering Tomorrow’s Leaders” awards. Rebecca Eden and a student still to be named were the winners. Freedom will receive three netbooks in Eden’s named. The other student has earned the school an I-Pad. Both will be eligible to win a personal laptop.

There was some bad news. The board heard Supt. Gleave report that State Board of Education has voted to fund only 10 months of health insurance benefits, not 12. The shortfall will total $33,700,000 in fiscal 2012, which school districts will have to make up. He urged the board to approve a payment of $5 per employee that will be made to support Schools United for Funded Health Insurance if that organization ultimately brings a lawsuit against the state to comply with the fully funded mandate of the state legislature.

Gleave said he knew of no schools that had refused to support United for Funded Health Insurance. The board approved joining the group.

In other business, the board approved extending the contract of Becky Castor as the district’s speech therapist for another year. They approved a basketball schedule with the assurance that four more games will be sought to make up for two schools that no longer play basketball. The first game is set for Oct. 27, with the first high school game Nov. 8.

Committee members for the 2011-12 school year were also approved, as was the board’s consent agenda, which includes minutes, encumbrances, and activities fund expenditures.

Carroll could give no reason why the total was lower. Gleave did note that the district’s General Fund will probably have to supplement the Child Nutrition Fund before the year is out. The board later in the meeting took action to allow that to happen.

Still owed and being retired by the Sinking Fund is $200,000 in bonded indebtedness. The last payment is scheduled to be made is May 1, 2015.

The district’s property valuation is down almost $1.2 million from a

year ago due primarily to the move of a company’s compressor unit from the Freedom area to Alfalfa County. The total evaluation is $14,909,418.

Supt. Gleave summed up the report. “We in pretty good shape financially,” he said.

His superintendent’s report and the principal’s report by Charla Gleave listed recent and upcoming activities. They also contained good news, including the success of the Freedom Booster Club Golf Tournament, the establishment of a

By Roger McKenzieAlfalfa County Commissioners, cit-

ing Title 22, Section 1181 of the Okla-homa statutes, voted to have County Clerk Bruce Martin immediately sus-pended with pay at Monday’s commis-sioners’ meeting. Chairman Doug Mur-row moved to suspend Martin pending an investigation and possible trial. Com-missioner Chad Roach, saying he felt it was in the best interests of both sides, seconded the motion. Commissioner Toby Walker joined the two in passing the motion unanimously.

It has never been made clear what Martin is accused of. According to As-sistant District Attorney Westline Ritter, Martin has been accused of violations of his office under statutes that include willful maladministration and oppres-sion in office.

Although the motion passed called for the immediate suspension of Martin, the official procedure requires a judge to issue the suspension order after deter-mining if sufficient cause exists from the charges, testimony, or affidavits present-ed to him. Martin could also voluntarily suspend himself.

Martin was still at work on Tuesday. He said he might have considered walk-ing out Monday after the motion was passed, but he felt obligated to work on the county payroll.

According to the statute cited by the commissioners, once Martin is suspend-ed, the board of county commissioners may temporarily fill the office by ap-pointment.

Grover on the warpathRetired kindergarten teacher and

Byron area resident Carole Grover re-turned to the commissioner’s meeting to demand they put a resolution to lower the speed limit on Latimer Road (Byron Blacktop) from 55 mph to 45 mph. She apologized to the other two commission-ers for taking so much meeting time then blasted Commissioner Doug Murrow for not already putting the speed limit reso-lution on the agenda.

She had spoken to the commission-er’s the week before about the problem

of overloaded and speeding trucks of en-ergy companies which are endangering drivers, destroying the road, and shaking her house to the point of damaging its foundation. She had requested the speed limit change at that time.

At Monday’s meeting, she asked Murrow why her request was not on the agenda. She demanded several times that Murrow put on the agenda for the Oct. 3 meeting a resolution calling for the decrease in speed limit. She also re-quested that when the resolution passes that appropriate signs be ordered and in-stalled immediately. She even offered to go to Alva to pick up the signs.

Murrow told her he did not put the item on the agenda for Monday’s meet-ing because he had talked to “dozens” of people who didn’t think the speed limit should be lowered.

At one point, Grover told the com-missioner, “You’re not telling the truth.” She also reprimanded him for trying to speak. “You don’t have the floor, I have the floor,” she said.

“I’m not in kindergarten,” Murrow told Grover.

“That’s why we have this problem,” said the former teacher. “I didn’t teach you.”

Murrow promised to put the resolu-tion on the agenda for the Oct. 3 meet-ing, but told Grover that a 45 mph speed limit “is not going to cure anything.”

Asked by Grover what he proposed, Murrow replied that he would put signs up requesting trucks to slow down and suggesting a 45 mph speed limit. Grover said she had been told by a state high-way trooper that he could stop one truck, but probably no more because drivers would pass the word that a trooper was stopping people.

“You have to deal with this, Grover told Murrow, because you are an elected officer.”

Murrow reiterated he would put the resolution on the agenda, but he also told Grover that he would be asking more people about how they felt about the matter.Still more changes to E911 agreement

By Jim StoutWhen Wyoming rescuers reached the

crash site of Alva’s Phil Prigmore last Friday, they started congratulating him and patting him on the back.

“We’ve never had a pilot come out alive,” one deputy told Prigmore. An-other called the remote area around Rock Springs, Wyoming, a “Bermuda Triangle” for aviation.

Prigmore had taken delivery on his newly-purchased red and white 1968 Cessna Cardinal 177 at Salem, Oregon,

Emergency landing in sagebrushearns local pilot pat on the back

last Thursday and had flown to Rock Springs to refuel and spend the night.

His 34 years as a military helicopter pilot must have had a great influence on his thought process when the engine lost power. Initial reports indicate he had climbed to 7,300 feet but failed to men-tion the airport’s altitude was 6,750.

“I had about 500 feet, and I was drop-ping fast,” he said Tuesday. “If I’d have tried to get back to the airport, I’d have crossed the terminal.” Probably with di-sastrous results to him and the terminal.

Another option would have him hit-ting the hangars, and yet another would have taken him into power lines. His last option was the sagebrush.

“I picked out a draw,” he said. “I caught the left landing gear and it spun me around.”

But he walked away, completely un-hurt, at least physically.

Had he faced similar situations in his military career?
