True Peace Amid the Turmoil - By: Pastor Michael Woldt

It happened again, as it has so often. At the conclusion

of a visit to provide communion to a member who was

unable to come to church, I proclaimed the familiar

Aaronic benediction: “The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to

you. The Lord look on you with favor and give you

peace.” After a moment of silence, our fellow believer

opened her heart. “Oh, pastor. How I long to hear that

blessing! It brings me peace.”

Aren’t we all longing to hear words of true peace amid

the turmoil of life? You don’t have to listen to the news

very long to understand why so many people are feeling

agitated. What triggers your anxiety? The crisis in

Afghanistan? Wildfires? Earthquakes? White

supremacists? Critical Race Theory? Partisan politics?

The Delta Variant? Government mandates? Vaccines?

Gun violence? Climate change? Inflation? Immigration?

Or it is something closer to home? Family conflict?

Failing health? Challenging financial decisions?

Uncertainty about the future? Mounting guilt from

constant failure to be the faithful follower of Jesus

Christ you want to be? Something else?

We all long for peace. Thank God we know where to

find it. Government leaders won’t give us true peace.

“Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who

cannot save” (Psalm 146:3). Even the most thoughtful

environmental practices and medical practices will not

completely rid the world of climate catastrophes and

deadly pandemics. “There will be great earthquakes,

famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful

events and great signs from heaven” (Luke 21:11).

Our personal desire to affect change in our lives is not

enough to overcome our sinful nature and bring us to a

settled place in our lives. “For I have the desire to do

what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For I do not do

the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—

this I keep on doing” (Romans 7:18b, 19). True and

lasting peace can only be found in Jesus Christ!

Jesus says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give

you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let

your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John

14:27). Those aren’t empty words. They come from the

lips of the one who gave his life for us. He freed us from

the curse of sin and death. He gave us peace with God

and a home in heaven! He has promised to be with us

and bless us no matter what we might hear on the news

or experience in our personal lives.

It’s good to be informed about what’s happening in

our world. Yet sometimes we need to tune out the

noise and godless chatter of those who offer empty

promises of true peace apart from Jesus. Our Lord

invites us to meditate on his word. “Blessed is the one...

whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who

meditates on his law day and night” (Psalm 1:1,2).

Do you find yourself longing for true peace amid the

turmoil? Turn your ears to the word of the Lord. Listen

for his blessing. Embrace it as your own. “The Lord look

on you with favor and give you peace.”

Afternoon Break-out Sessions – Choose two

1. All Belong, All Serve – Pastor Jim Behringer In Christ, you belong to me and I belong to you. In what sense? For what purpose? As we return to our churches after “doing church” at home, some see no need to return. The Lord created us to be His “body” and distributed His gifts so we would need each other. His body includes the blind and deaf, the addict and the person recently released from prison. How do we belong to our church family and serve each other?

2. Protecting and Preserving God’s Gift of Sight- Betsy Woldt Proverbs 20:12 Ears that hear and eyes that see – the Lord has made them both! This presentation will give an overview of eye conditions, diseases and practices for maintaining personal eye health. It will also offer guidance as to when you should consult your eye care professional. There will be time for questions and discussion.

3. Everlasting Treasures – Susan Nitz In this busy and fast paced world, it’s easy to lose sight of the enduring gifts God provides for us. While serving for 27 years as a missionary wife in Malawi, Africa, Susan Nitz was taught the meaning of the Bible verse from Mathew 6 that reminds us not to store up treasures for ourselves on Earth, but to store up treasures in Heaven. Through personal stories of God’s grace and provision, Susan will encourage us to set our hearts on everlasting treasures while serving our Savior.

4. You’re in Great Hands – Colleen Loeffler, Rachel Gustafson What circumstances will challenge your faith today? What burdens are hard for you to carry? In this session, through examples from God’s Word, you will be reminded that God’s got this. He is right beside you as you walk by faith and not by sight. This session will include a time to share what has helped you face troubles in your life.

5. Make and Take - Rachael Kreis (KML art teacher) Enjoy making your own rustic lazy susan! We will paint the base, stencil a saying (ex: Blessed, Gather, Thankful) and attach hardware. Extra cost $15 – Limited to first 24 to register.

LWMS OFFERING ENVELOPE

Grouped with your September offering envelopes, is a pink envelope for

Lutheran Women’s Mission Society (LWMS). LWMS exists to increase

awareness of, interest in, and support of mission outreach of WELS.

All confirmed women of David’s Star are members of this group. Although the membership in LWMS is

women, we invite everyone to help support mission work through prayer and contributions.

Each year, one home mission and one world mission are selected for our support. With the Lord’s blessings,

your support for these projects will allow the missions to plan events or reach more lost souls with the

precious gospel message.

The current home mission project is the Joint Missions Special Projects. WELS Joint Missions is currently

working with over 15 different people group ministries while also managing Pastoral Studies Institute (PSI)

and WELS Mission Journeys. Some of these ministries have been around quite a long time and have large

operations, like the Hispanic and Hmong ministries. Other Joint Mission ministries are relatively new to the

synod or are limited to a single location. Many of these groups are working to share the gospel in their own

communities and are also reaching back to their home countries with the saving message of Jesus Christ. Your

gifts to this fund will support cross cultural and people group ministries in, among others, Asian, South Asian,

African immigrants, the Sudanese, and the Latin American peoples.

The current world mission project is Africa. The Lord is presenting the One Africa Team with many new

opportunities for gospel outreach across the continent. The primary mission focus is the theological training

of African nationals to help them become qualified pastors, teachers, and lay leaders in their respective

church bodies. The One Africa Team currently partners with sister church bodies in six different countries:

Cameroon, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, and Zambia. Within these countries there is fellowship with

nearly 60,000 Lutheran brothers and sisters. Recently, an additional nine African countries have reached out

for fellowship and theological training! While this is a tremendous blessing, such opportunities are stretching

the current resources. Your gift will help fund the projects as needed, and include African outreach and

theological education, African national parsonage building and church worship facilities, African national

pastors and vicar support, and Africa WELS asset maintenance.

Please keep these men and women in your prayers. Thank you in advance for your support. For more

information on LWMS, visit lwms.org or contact Nancy Ebling or Linda Klein.

Hosted by Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary Auxilliary. You are invited to Friends of the Seminary Day on October

2nd, from 8:00 am—12:45 pm where men and women learn more about the vital mission of the seminary.

Lunch will be served at noon. Please RSVP by Sept. 17 by sending your name, address, telephone number,

home congregation, and $10 registration fee to Lori Guse, 11831 N Seminary Dr. Mequon, WI 53092.

August, 2021

It seems that Covid-19 often comes up as a topic in our newsletters. I guess this one

is no exception. Zambia and Malawi are both in their third wave of infections although

cases have moderated in both countries in recent weeks.

The virus has struck our Mwembezhi clinic in Zambia. Zambia has been slower to begin

its vaccination campaign and as a result only one or two of our clinic staff there have received even one shot of

Vaccine. Consequently, when an outbreak of the virus affected the area around Mwembezhi our clinic staff were

not immune.

Despite the precautions we had taken at the clinic against Covid -19, four of our clinic staff tested positive for the

Virus. Two of those infected were Future Biloyi – one of our nurses and Anthony Kosongo -our Laboratory

Technician. Both are younger and did not have serious symptoms. However, Mrs. Mayase Banda who is one of our

older nurses, had to be taken to the hospital in Lusaka and was put on oxygen. Praise God all have recovered and

are doing well. The remaining staff were also tested when the outbreak occurred and despite at one point being

down four staff, clinic operations were not affected. The clinic buildings were disinfected and our covid

precautions were reviewed to guard against further infections occurring during clinic hours.

In March 2021, Malawi was one of the first sub–Saharan Africa nations to begin vaccinating. However, vaccine

deliveries to the country have been unreliable. All of our staff have now had one dose, while Beth and our older

staff members have had two doses. We have had issues with getting other staff fully vaccinated because demand

has far out stripped supply. One of our staff tested positive over the Christmas break, and did not return to work

so we were not worried about the rest of our staff. We have had one or two recent scares but so far, no additional

staff have tested positive.

One of those scares occurred in mid-July. Beth and I were just turning into the airport to begin a vacation with

our family in the US when we received a text saying a childcare provider for one of our staff had tested positive.

Fortunately, we have Violet Chikwatu and Lusungu Mwembeye in training to take over from Beth and me. We

decided Violet and Lusungu should handle the problem. We reminded them of the Covid protocols they should

follow and let them take care of it, which they did. The staff member was sent home to isolate. He later tested

negative and returned to work.

As I write this letter Beth has returned to Malawi from the US, I am now in England visiting family. Beth was

impressed with Violet’s work and the initiative she took in making sure that clinic operations continued without

issue. Lusungu also did well solving problems and taking care of the day-to-day administrative functions.

This was their first test of how well they can run the clinic in our absence, and both have done well. This bodes

well for the future.

Please keep the people of Malawi and Zambia in your prayers, especially that Covid Vaccine supplies and

distribution can improve and so spare them the misery of this infection. Please also pray for our staff in Malawi

and Zambia, that they stay healthy and continue to do the work God has given us.

Romans 12:2 (NIV)

“ Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your

mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good,

pleasing and perfect will.”

Screens are so popular with children and adults these days. Complicating the scenario is that some screen time

can be educational. As we head back to school, here are a few tips to help you manage your child’s screen time.

Contemplate in real and virtual environments the amount of time spent and where their time is spent. Teach

kindness, be involved, do devotions and Bible studies, know their friends and encourage both cooperative and

independent play. Know what is on the screen and consider previewing all games/apps prior to your child

viewing them.

Parental controls, conversation and information are keys to safely tuning in. Ask your child what programs,

games and apps they have been playing with during the day. Consider applying limits to screen time that

doesn’t revolve around their educational needs. Fast paced programming can be distracting and difficult for our

younger children to understand. Often commercials are hidden in fast paced programming which may have

challenging content.

Unfortunately, at some point your child will be exposed to content that you may not approve of. Talk to your

child about potential situations and if there is something online that they do not understand or that frightens

them, let them know they should come to you. Be present, open and available. As always, consult with your

child’s teachers on the current recommendations for appropriate screen time. There is a great amount of

research to support monitored screen time.

Note: Poor quality screen time has been linked to:

• Obesity

• Poor sleep patterns

• Behavioral problems

• Loss of social skills

• Violence

• Decreased play

Mission Statement David’s Star Evangelical Lutheran Church

This congregation shall strive to proclaim the Law and Gospel; to lead sinners to repentance and faith in Christ Jesus for life and salvation; to strengthen believers in faith and sanctification through the Means of Grace; to equip believers as disciples, stewards, and witnesses for sharing the Gospel of Jesus with our fellowmen. The continuing purpose of this congregation, as a group of Christians, and ultimate objective, is to serve all people in God’s world with his Gospel. All members of this congregation shall strive to proclaim the joys of Christian life and to witness for Christ to the best of their individual abilities. (1 John 5:1-10)
